Nematic domains and resistivity in an itinerant metamagnet coupled to a lattice
The nature of the emergent phase near a putative quantum critical point in
the bilayer ruthenate SrRuO has been a recent subject of intensive
research. It has been suggested that this phase may possess electronic nematic
order(ENO). In this work, we investigate the possibility of nematic domain
formation in the emergent phase, using a phenomenological model of electrons
with ENO and its coupling to lattice degrees of freedom. The resistivity due to
the scattering off the domain walls is shown to closely follow the ENO
parameter. Our results provide qualitative explanations for the dependence of

Effects of Electron Correlations on Hofstadter Spectrum
By allowing interactions between electrons, a new Harper's equation is
derived to examine the effects of electron correlations on the Hofstadter
energy spectra. It is shown that the structure of the Hofstadter butterfly ofr
the system of correlated electrons is modified only in the band gaps and the
band widths, but not in the characteristics of self-similarity and the Cantor

Tuning the proximity effect in a superconductor-graphene-superconductor junction
We have tuned in situ the proximity effect in a single graphene layer coupled
to two Pt/Ta superconducting electrodes. An annealing current through the
device changed the transmission coefficient of the electrode/graphene
interface, increasing the probability of multiple Andreev reflections. Repeated
annealing steps improved the contact sufficiently for a Josephson current to be

Thematic Research network for emergency and UnScheduled Treatment (TRUST): scoping the potential
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To identify the benefits of a network in emergency and unscheduled care research, a six week scoping study was undertaken. Objectives were to: draw together stakeholders; identify and prioritise research topics; identify sites for recruitment to studies; and agree a research strategy for a network.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A workshop was held to discuss and agree a research strategy based on results from four activities: visits to established research centres in emergency and unscheduled care; a literature overview; interviews with stakeholders in a GP out-of-hours service; and an exploration of the potential for routine data to support research in emergency care.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Participants attended the workshop from user groups, primary care, the ambulance service, social care, the national telephone based health helpline, the Welsh Assembly Government and the academic sector. Site visits identified opportunities for collaboration. Gaps in knowledge were identified concerning the effectiveness of alternative models of emergency care delivery. Interview data highlighted a lack of evidence related to the quality of out-of-hours provision of primary care. The All Wales Injury Surveillance System (AWISS) was found to offer the potential to use routine data to support quantitative studies in emergency care. Three key issues emerged across all activities: working across boundaries; patient involvement; and triage.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The study included views from patient, provider, policy and academic perspectives and built the case for a research network in emergency care. Now funded, TRUST (Thematic Research network for emergency and UnScheduled Treatment) will allow the development of research proposals, building of research teams and recruitment of sites and patients both in Wales and across the UK. It aims to address the imbalance between investment and research in this area and help support provision of 'the right care to the right people at the right time'.</p
Hybrid bright-field and hologram imaging of cell dynamics
Volumetric observation is essential for understanding the details of complex biological phenomena.
In this study, a bright-field microscope, which provides information on a specific 2D plane, and a
holographic microscope, which provides information spread over 3D volumes, are integrated to acquire
two complementary images simultaneously. The developed system was successfully applied to capture
distinct T-cell adhesion dynamics on inflamed endothelial layers, including capture, rolling, crawling,

Non-coding sequence retrieval system for comparative genomic analysis of gene regulatory elements
BACKGROUND: Completion of the human genome sequence along with other species allows for greater understanding of the biochemical mechanisms and processes that govern healthy as well as diseased states. The large size of the genome sequences has made them difficult to study using traditional methods. There are many studies focusing on the protein coding sequences, however, not much is known about the function of non-coding regions of the genome. It has been demonstrated that parts of the non-coding region play a critical role as gene regulatory elements. Enhancers that regulate transcription processes have been found in intergenic regions. Furthermore, it is observed that regulatory elements found in non-coding regions are highly conserved across different species. However, the analysis of these regulatory elements is not as straightforward as it may first seem. The development of a centralized resource that allows for the quick and easy retrieval of non-coding sequences from multiple species and is capable of handing multi-gene queries is critical for the analysis of non-coding sequences. Here we describe the development of a web-based non-coding sequence retrieval system. RESULTS: This paper presents a Non-Coding Sequences Retrieval System (NCSRS). The NCSRS is a web-based bioinformatics tool that performs fast and convenient retrieval of non-coding and coding sequences from multiple species related to a specific gene or set of genes. This tool has compiled resources from multiple sources into one easy to use and convenient web based interface. With no software installation necessary, the user needs only internet access to use this tool. CONCLUSION: The unique features of this tool will be very helpful for those studying gene regulatory elements that exist in non-coding regions. Nonequilibrium effects due to charge fluctuations in intrinsic Josephson systems
Nonequilibrium effects in layered superconductors forming a stack of
intrinsic Josephson junctions are investigated. We discuss two basic
nonequilibrium effects caused by charge fluctuations on the superconducting
layers: a) the shift of the chemical potential of the condensate and b) charge
imbalance of quasi-particles, and study their influence on IV-curves and the
