Next-to-Leading Order Corrections to Single Top Quark Production and Decay at the Tevatron: 1. s-channel Process

We present a study of s-channel single top quark production at the upgraded Tevatron ppˉp\bar{p} collider, including the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the production and the decay of the top quark. The "modified" narrow width approximation was adopted to preserve the spin of the top quark in its production and decay. We discuss the effect of the different O(αs)O(\alpha_s) contributions on the inclusive cross section as well as various kinematic distributions after imposing the relevant cuts to select s-channel single top signal events. In particular the O(αs)O(\alpha_s) decay contribution, while small in size, has a significant impact on several distributions. With the help of the best-jet algorithm to reconstruct the top quark we demonstrate that it is possible to study kinematical and spin correlations in s-channel single top events. We furthermore compare top quark spin measurements in two different basis and show how NLO corrections have to be taken into consideration in searches for the Higgs boson through W±HW^{\pm}H associated production at the Tevatron.Comment: 39 pages, 37 figure

    Ti-rich and Cu-poor grain-boundary layers of CaCu3_3Ti4_4O12_{12} detected by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Cleaved and polished surfaces of CaCu3_3Ti4_4O12_{12} ceramics have been investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), respectively. While EDX technique shows the identical CaCu3_3Ti4_4O12_{12} stoichiometry for the two surfaces, XPS indicates that the cleaved surface with grain-boundary layers is remarkably Ti-rich and Cu-poor. The core-level spectrum of Cu 2pp unambiguously shows the existence of monovalent copper only for the cleaved surface. Possible grain-boundary structure and its formation are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

Single Top Quark Production and Decay at Next-to-leading Order in Hadron Collision

We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections, with one-scale phase space slicing method, to single top quark production and decay process ppˉ,pptbˉ+Xbνbˉ+Xp\bar{p},pp\to t\bar{b}+X\to b\ell\nu\bar{b}+X at hadron colliders. Using the helicity amplitude method, the angular correlation of the final state partons and the spin correlation of the top quark are preserved. The effect of the top quark width is also examined.Comment: 47 pages, 9 figure

Fluctuations of Spatial Patterns as a Measure of Classical Chaos

    Get PDF
In problems where the temporal evolution of a nonlinear system cannot be followed, a method for studying the fluctuations of spatial patterns has been developed. That method is applied to well-known problems in deterministic chaos (the logistic map and the Lorenz model) to check its effectiveness in characterizing the dynamical behaviors. It is found that the indices μq\mu _q are as useful as the Lyapunov exponents in providing a quantitative measure of chaos.Comment: 10 pages + 7 figures (in ps file), LaTex, Submitted to Phys. Rev.

Change detection in categorical evolving data streams

    Get PDF
Detecting change in evolving data streams is a central issue for accurate adaptive learning. In real world applications, data streams have categorical features, and changes induced in the data distribution of these categorical features have not been considered extensively so far. Previous work on change detection focused on detecting changes in the accuracy of the learners, but without considering changes in the data distribution. To cope with these issues, we propose a new unsupervised change detection method, called CDCStream (Change Detection in Categorical Data Streams), well suited for categorical data streams. The proposed method is able to detect changes in a batch incremental scenario. It is based on the two following characteristics: (i) a summarization strategy is proposed to compress the actual batch by extracting a descriptive summary and (ii) a new segmentation algorithm is proposed to highlight changes and issue warnings for a data stream. To evaluate our proposal we employ it in a learning task over real world data and we compare its results with state of the art methods. We also report qualitative evaluation in order to show the behavior of CDCStream

Mode Repulsion and Mode Coupling in Random Lasers

We studied experimentally and theoretically the interaction of lasing modes in random media. In a homogeneously broadened gain medium, cross gain saturation leads to spatial repulsion of lasing modes. In an inhomogeneously broadened gain medium, mode repulsion occurs in the spectral domain. Some lasing modes are coupled through photon hopping or electron absorption and reemission. Under pulsed pumping, weak coupling of two modes leads to synchronization of their lasing action. Strong coupling of two lasing modes results in anti-phased oscillations of their intensities.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

Noise of Kondo dot with ac gate: Floquet-Green's function and Noncrossing Approximation Approach

The transport properties of an ac-driving quantum dot in the Kondo regime are studied by the Floquet-Green's function method with slave-boson infinite-UU noncrossing approximation. Our results show that the Kondo peak of the local density of states is robust against weak ac gate modulation. Significant suppression of the Kondo peak can be observed when the ac gate field becomes strong. The photon-assisted noise of Kondo resonance as a function of dc voltage does not show singularities which are expected for noninteracting resonant quantum dot. These findings suggest that one may make use of the photon-assisted noise measurement to tell apart whether the resonant transport is via noninteracting resonance or strongly-correlated Kondo resonance
