First record of an Odontaspidid shark in Ascension Island waters
The occurrence of the poorly understood shark species Odontapsis ferox is reported at an oceanic seamount in the central south Atlantic, within the Exclusive Economic Zone of Ascension Island. The presence of the species at this location is confirmed by the discovery of a tooth embedded in scientific equipment, and footage of at least one animal on autonomous underwater video. The new record of this shark species at this location demonstrates the knowledge gaps which still exist at many remote, oceanic structures and their candidacy for status as important conservation areas.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Simultaneous Inference of User Representations and Trust
Inferring trust relations between social media users is critical for a number
of applications wherein users seek credible information. The fact that
available trust relations are scarce and skewed makes trust prediction a
challenging task. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on
exploring representation learning for trust prediction. We propose an approach
that uses only a small amount of binary user-user trust relations to
simultaneously learn user embeddings and a model to predict trust between user
pairs. We empirically demonstrate that for trust prediction, our approach
outperforms classifier-based approaches which use state-of-the-art
representation learning methods like DeepWalk and LINE as features. We also
conduct experiments which use embeddings pre-trained with DeepWalk and LINE
each as an input to our model, resulting in further performance improvement.
Experiments with a dataset of 356K user pairs show that the proposed

Particle acceleration, magnetic field generation, and emission in relativistic pair jets
Shock acceleration is a ubiquitous phenomenon in astrophysical plasmas.
Plasma waves and their associated instabilities (e.g., Buneman, Weibel and
other two-stream instabilities) created in collisionless shocks are responsible
for particle (electron, positron, and ion) acceleration. Using a 3-D
relativistic electromagnetic particle (REMP) code, we have investigated
particle acceleration associated with a relativistic jet front propagating into
an ambient plasma. We find that the growth times of Weibel instability are
proportional to the Lorentz factors of jets. Simulations show that the Weibel
instability created in the collisionless shock front accelerates jet and
ambient particles both perpendicular and parallel to the jet propagation

Reaction Diffusion and Ballistic Annihilation Near an Impenetrable Boundary
The behavior of the single-species reaction process is examined
near an impenetrable boundary, representing the flask containing the reactants.
Two types of dynamics are considered for the reactants: diffusive and ballistic
propagation. It is shown that the effect of the boundary is quite different in
both cases: diffusion-reaction leads to a density excess, whereas ballistic
annihilation exhibits a density deficit, and in both cases the effect is not
localized at the boundary but penetrates into the system. The field-theoretic
renormalization group is used to obtain the universal properties of the density
excess in two dimensions and below for the reaction-diffusion system. In one
dimension the excess decays with the same exponent as the bulk and is found by
an exact solution. In two dimensions the excess is marginally less relevant
than the bulk decay and the density profile is again found exactly for late
times from the RG-improved field theory. The results obtained for the diffusive
case are relevant for Mg or Cd doping in the TMMC crystal's
exciton coalescence process and also imply a surprising result for the dynamic
magnetization in the critical one-dimensional Ising model with a fixed spin.
For the case of ballistic reactants, a model is introduced and solved exactly
in one dimension. The density-deficit profile is obtained, as is the density of
left and right moving reactants near the impenetrable boundary.Comment: to appear in J. Phys.

A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.0) is now
available. This is the first version of the program which can be used for
hadron-hadron physics and includes the full simulation of both initial- and

Estimation of Primordial Spectrum with post-WMAP 3 year data
In this paper we implement an improved (error sensitive) Richardson-Lucy
deconvolution algorithm on the measured angular power spectrum from the WMAP 3
year data to determine the primordial power spectrum assuming different points
in the cosmological parameter space for a flat LCDM cosmological model. We also
present the preliminary results of the cosmological parameter estimation by
assuming a free form of the primordial spectrum, for a reasonably large volume
of the parameter space. The recovered spectrum for a considerably large number
of the points in the cosmological parameter space has a likelihood far better
than a `best fit' power law spectrum up to \Delta \chi^2_{eff} \approx -30. We
use Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) for smoothing the raw recovered spectrum
from the binned data. The results obtained here reconfirm and sharpen the
conclusion drawn from our previous analysis of the WMAP 1st year data. A sharp
cut off around the horizon scale and a bump after the horizon scale seem to be
a common feature for all of these reconstructed primordial spectra. We have
shown that although the WMAP 3 year data prefers a lower value of matter
density for a power law form of the primordial spectrum, for a free form of the
spectrum, we can get a very good likelihood to the data for higher values of
matter density. We have also shown that even a flat CDM model, allowing a free
form of the primordial spectrum, can give a very high likelihood fit to the
data. Theoretical interpretation of the results is open to the cosmology
community. However, this work provides strong evidence that the data retains
discriminatory power in the cosmological parameter space even when there is

Children's construction task performance and spatial ability: controlling task complexity and predicting mathematics performance.
This paper presents a methodology to control construction task complexity and examined the relationships between construction performance and spatial and mathematical abilities in children. The study included three groups of children (N = 96); ages 7-8, 10-11, and 13-14 years. Each group constructed seven pre-specified objects. The study replicated and extended previous findings that indicated that the extent of component symmetry and variety, and the number of components for each object and available for selection, significantly predicted construction task difficulty. Results showed that this methodology is a valid and reliable technique for assessing and predicting construction play task difficulty.
