Hot spots and waves in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 intrinsic Josephson junction stacks -a study by Low Temperature Scanning Laser Microscopy
Recently, it has been shown that large stacks of intrinsic Josephson
junctions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 emit synchronous THz radiation, the synchronization
presumably triggered by a cavity resonance. To investigate this effect we use
Low Temperature Scanning Laser Microscopy to image electric field
distributions. Apart from verifying the appearance of cavity modes at low bias
we find that, in a high input power regime, standing-wave patterns are created
through interactions with a hot spot, possibly pointing to a new mode of
generating synchronized radiation in intrinsic Josephson junction stacks.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, supplementary information include
Electric current control of spin helicity in an itinerant helimagnet
Chirality is breaking of mirror symmetry in matter. In the fields of biology
and chemistry, this is particularly important because some of the essential
molecules in life such as amino acids and DNA have chirality. It is a
long-standing mystery how one of the enantiomers was chosen at the beginning
stage of life. The understanding of the emergence of homochirality under some
conditions is indispensable for the study of the origin of life as well as
pharmaceutical science. The chirality is also emergent in magnetic structures.
The longitudinal helical magnetic structure is the chiral object composed of
magnetic moments, in which the ordered direction of the magnetic moment
spatially rotates in the plane perpendicular to the propagation vector (Fig.
1a). Since the sense of rotation, which is denoted as helicity, is reversed by
any mirror operation, it is corresponding to the chirality. Here we show that
the chirality of a longitudinal helical structure can be controlled by the
magnetic field and electric current owing to the spin-transfer torque
irrelevant to the spin-orbit interaction and probed by electrical magnetochiral
effect, which is sensitive to the chiral symmetry breaking, in an itinerant
helimagnet MnP. This phenomenon is distinct from the multiferroicity in
transverse-type insulating helical magnets, in which the helical plane is
parallel to the propagation vector, because the magnetic structure has polar
symmetry not chiral one. While the combination of the magnetic field and
electric current satisfies the symmetrical rule of external stimulus for the
chirality control, the control with them was not reported for any chiral object
previously. The present result may pave a new route to the control of
chiralities originating from magnetic and atomical arrangements.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
A Cross-Whiskers Junction as a Novel Fabrication Process for Intrinsic Josephson Junction
A Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d cross-whiskers junction has been successfully discovered as
a novel intrinsic Josephson junction without using any technique for
micro-fabrication. Two Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d whisker crystals were placed crosswise
on a MgO substrate and heated at 850C for 30 min. They were electrically
connected at their c-planes. The measurement terminals were made at the four
ends of the whiskers. The I-V characteristics of the cross-whiskers junction at
5K were found to show a clear multiple-branch structure with a spacing of
approximately 15 mV that is a feature of the intrinsic Josephson junction. The
critical current density Jc was estimated to be 1170 A/cm2. The
branch-structure was strongly suppressed by the magnetic field above 1kOe.Comment: 4 pages, PDF fil
Homogenization and enhancement for the G-equation
We consider the so-called G-equation, a level set Hamilton-Jacobi equation,
used as a sharp interface model for flame propagation, perturbed by an
oscillatory advection in a spatio-temporal periodic environment. Assuming that
the advection has suitably small spatial divergence, we prove that, as the size
of the oscillations diminishes, the solutions homogenize (average out) and
converge to the solution of an effective anisotropic first-order
(spatio-temporal homogeneous) level set equation. Moreover we obtain a rate of
convergence and show that, under certain conditions, the averaging enhances the
velocity of the underlying front. We also prove that, at scale one, the level
sets of the solutions of the oscillatory problem converge, at long times, to
the Wulff shape associated with the effective Hamiltonian. Finally we also
consider advection depending on position at the integral scale
d-like Symmetry of the Order Parameter and Intrinsic Josephson Effects in Bi2212 Cross-Whisker Junctions
An intrinsic tunnel junction was made using two Bi-2212 single crystal
whiskers. The two whiskers with a cross-angle were overlaid at their c-planes
and connected by annealing. The angular dependence of the critical current
density along the c-axis is of the d-wave symmetry. However, the angular
dependence is much stronger than that of the conventional d-wave. Furthermore,
the current vs. voltage characteristics of the cross-whiskers junctions show a
multiple-branch structure at any cross-angle, indicating the formation of the
intrinsic Josephson junction array.Comment: 4 pages PDF fil
Search for Chargino-Neutralino Associated Production at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider
We have searched in collisions at = 1.8 TeV for events
with three charged leptons and missing transverse energy. In the Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model, we expect trilepton events from
chargino-neutralino (\chione \chitwo) pair production, with subsequent decay
into leptons. We observe no candidate , ,
or events in 106 pb integrated
luminosity. We present limits on the sum of the branching ratios times cross
section for the four channels: \sigma_{\chione\chitwo}\cdot
BR(\chione\chitwo\to 3\ell+X) 81.5 \mgev\sp and
M_\chitwo > 82.2 \mgev\sp for , ~\mgev\sp and
M_\squark= M_\gluino.Comment: 9 pages and 3 figure
