Is Microsporidial keratitis an emerging cause of stromal keratitis? – a case series study
BACKGROUND: Microsporidial keratitis is a rare cause of stromal keratitis. We present a series of five cases of microsporidial keratitis from a single centre in southern India with microbiologic and histopathologic features. CASE PRESENTATION: Patient charts of five cases of microsporidial stromal keratitis diagnosed between January 2002 and June 2004 were reviewed retrospectively for clinical data, microbiologic and histopathologic data. The presence of microsporidia was confirmed by special stains on corneal scrapings and/or corneal tissues, and electron microscopy. All patients were immunocompetent with a preceding history of trauma in three. Four patients presented with unilateral, small, persisting deep stromal infiltrates, of uncertain etiology, in the cornea, which were not responding to conventional antimicrobial treatment and required penetrating keratoplasty in three. Fifth case was unsuspected and underwent keratoplasty for post-traumatic scar. Three of five cases were diagnosed on corneal scrapings, prior to keratoplasty, while two were diagnosed only on histology. The microsporidia appeared as oval well defined bodies with dense staining at one pole. None of the patients showed recurrence following keratoplasty. CONCLUSION: Microsporidia, though rare, should be suspected in chronic culture-negative stromal keratitis. Organisms could lie dormant without associated inflammation

Isoelectric focusing of bovine major histocompatibility complex class I molecules
The products of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) loci regulate an individual's immune response to pathogens. Cattle provide an important model to study the relationship between disease susceptibility and MHC haplotype since large half-sibling families are common. The definitive demonstration, however, of a firm relationship between MHC phenotype and disease susceptibility in cattle will require a precise definition of the bovine MHC allelic products. Available reagents for serological characterization of the bovine MHC gene products have not been adequate for these purposes. We have shown that existing mouse monoclonal antibodies and rabbit anti-human antisera precipitate bovine class I molecules, that these structures separate well by one-dimensional isoelectric focusing (1-D IEF), and that immunoprecipitation followed by 1-D IEF allows the detection of bovine class I MHC allelic products. Through this technique, we have identified previously undetected class I products. This approach will facilitate a detailed characterization of the bovine MHC class I gene products
Epstein-Barr virus associated aplastic anaemia and hepatitis
We report a Chinese girl with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated aplastic anaemia and hepatitis. Epstein-Barr virus genome was demonstrated in her bone marrow cells and EBV-specific serology suggested reactivation of EBV infection. She was initially treated with anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) and methylprednisolone but with no haematologic response, and liver function continued to deteriorate. She was then treated with acyclovir. Her aplastic anaemia improved and hepatitis resolved, and there was eradication of EBV genome from her bone marrow cells.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
