    Seasonality of the pelagic ichthyofauna in the Lazarev Sea

    The Southern Ocean is characterised by an extreme seasonality which is best observed by the huge variation in sea ice extent. It expands from a minimum extent of 4 million square kilometres in February to a maximum of 19 million square kilometres in September and influences the physics and chemistry of the surface layers and the corresponding life histories of organisms. Reduced light condition and sea ice cover have a pronounced impact on primary production and predation risk in the pelagic zone. Here we present comparison of the distribution of fish in the Lazarev Sea correlated to biotic an abiotic features. Samples were collected in the framework of three LAKRIS (Lazarev Krill Study) campaigns onboard RV Polarstern during summer, fall and winter. The main focus was on factors affecting krill distribution. As such a wide variety of biotic and abiotic measures were made. Fish and fish larvae were collected from trawls from the upper 200m during both seasons. Both during summer and winter larval composition was dominated by pre-metamorphic Electrona antarctica and Notolepis coatsi. Post-metamorphic E. antarctica showed a pronounced seasonal difference in occurrence

    Broad-spectrum Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Tumor and Infected Orthopedic Surgery - the prospective-randomized, microbiologist-blinded, stratified, superiority Trials - BAPTIST trials

    Background: The perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis with 1st or 2nd-generation cephalosporins is evidence-based in orthopedic surgery. There are, however, situations with a high risk of prophylaxis-resistant surgical site infections (SSI). Methods: We perform a superiority randomized-controlled trial with a 10% margin and a power of 90% in favor of the broad-spectrum prophylaxis. We will randomize orthopedic interventions with a high risk for SSI (open fractures, surgery under therapeutic antibiotics, tumor surgery, spine surgery with ASA-Score ≄ 3 points) in a prospective-alternating scheme (1:1, standard prophylaxis with mostly cefuroxime versus a broad-spectrum prophylaxis of a combined single-shot of vancomycin 1 g & gentamicin 5 mg/kg parenterally). The primary outcomes are "remission" at 6 weeks; or at 1 year for surgeries with implant. Secondary outcomes are the risk for prophylaxis-resistant SSI pathogens, revision surgery for any reason, change of antibiotic therapy, adverse events and the incidence of non-SSI infections within 6 weeks (e.g. urine infections). With event-free surgeries to 95% in the broad-spectrum versus 85% in the standard arm, we need 2 x 207 orthopedic surgeries among all groups. Discussion: In selected patients with a high risk for prophylaxis-resistant SSI, a broad-spectrum combination might prevent SSIs better than the standard prophylaxis.     Occupational exposure to N-nitrosamines and pesticides and risk of pancreatic cancer

    Objectives Animal evidence shows that N-nitrosamines and similar xenobiotic compounds are pancreatic carcinogens. We aimed to determine whether occupational exposure to N-nitrosamines or to pesticides increases risk of pancreatic cancer development. Methods Participants (504 cases, 643 controls) in a population-based case-control study (The Queensland Pancreatic Cancer Study) provided data on demographic, medical and lifestyle factors and lifetime job histories. Specific questions were asked regarding work in rubber and leather industries, metalworking jobs and occupational or direct use of pesticides on animals or crops. An occupational hygienist reviewed this information (blind to case status) to assess likelihood of exposure to N-nitrosamines and pesticides, and estimated level and frequency of such exposures. Results No associations were found for risk of pancreatic cancer and occupational exposure to N-nitrosamines (OR=0.85, 95% CI 0.51 to 1.42) and no associations were seen with level or frequency of exposure. No associations were observed for ever exposure to pesticides in general (OR=0.90, 95% CI 0.61 to 1.33) or to any of the pesticide subgroups. Stratification by history of cigarette smoking did not change these results. Conclusions This comprehensive analysis of a large case-control study does not support an association between occupational exposure to N-nitrosamines or pesticide use and risk of pancreatic cancer

    Label-Free C-Reactive Protein Si Nanowire FET Sensor Arrays With Super-Nernstian Back-Gate Operation

    We present a CMOS-compatible double gate and label-free C-reactive protein (CRP) sensor, based on silicon on insulator (SOI) silicon nanowires arrays. We exploit a reference subtracted detection method and a super-Nernstian internal amplification given by the double gate structure. We overcome the Debye screening of charged CRP proteins in solutions using antibodies fragments as capturing probes, reducing the overall thickness of the capture layer. We demonstrate the internal amplification through the pH response of the sensor, in static and real-time working modes. While operated in back-gate configuration, the sensor shows excellent stability (<20 pA/min in the worst case), low hysteresis (<300 mV), and a great sensitivity up to 1.2 nA/dec toward CRP proteins in the linear response range. The reported system is an excellent candidate for the continuous monitoring of inflammation biomarkers in serum or interstitial fluid

    Intermediate window observable for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon g−2g-2 from O(a)(a) improved Wilson quarks

    Following the publication of the new measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, the discrepancy between experiment and the theory prediction from the g−2 theory initiative has increased to 4.2σ. Recent lattice QCD calculations predict values for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution that are larger than the data-driven estimates, bringing the Standard Model prediction closer to the experimental measurement. Euclidean time windows in the time-momentum representation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon g−2 can help clarify the discrepancy between the phenomenological and lattice predictions. We present our calculation of the intermediate distance window contribution using Nf=2+1 flavors of O(a) improved Wilson quarks. We employ ensembles at six lattice spacings below 0.1fm and pion masses down to the physical value. We present a detailed study of the continuum limit, using two discretizations of the vector current and two independent sets of improvement coefficients. Our result at the physical point displays a tension of 3.9σ with a recent evaluation of the intermediate window based on the data-driven method

    There is increasing interest in methods to disentangle the relationship between genotype and (endo)phenotypes in human complex traits. We present a population-based method of increasing the power and cost-efficiency of studies by selecting random individuals with a particular genotype and then assessing the accompanying quantitative phenotypes. Using statistical derivations, power- and cost graphs we show that such a “forward genetics” approach can lead to a marked reduction in sample size and costs. This approach is particularly apt for implementing in epidemiological studies for which DNA is already available but the phenotyping costs are high

    : A patient presented with concurrent mood congruent delusions, parkinsonism, and elevated post-dexamethasone plasma cortisol levels. This triad could result from simultaneous development of cholinergic-monoaminergic dysfunction within critical limbic and extrapyramidal loci. The magnitude of each abnormality decreased in concert during a course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Remaining abnormalities disappeared during treatment with lithium.     Use of aspirin, other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and acetaminophen and risk of endometrial cancer : the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium

    Background: Regular use of aspirin has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer at several sites but the data for endometrial cancer are conflicting. Evidence regarding use of other analgesics is limited. Patients and methods: We pooled individual-level data from seven cohort and five case-control studies participating in the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium including 7120 women with endometrial cancer and 16 069 controls. For overall analyses, study-specific odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using logistic regression and combined using random-effects meta-analysis; for stratified analyses, we used mixed-effects logistic regression with study as a random effect. Results: At least weekly use of aspirin and non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was associated with an approximately 15% reduced risk of endometrial cancer among both overweight and obese women (OR 1/4 0.86 [95% CI 0.760.98] and 0.86 [95% CI 0.76-0.97], respectively, for aspirin; 0.87 [95% CI 0.76-1.00] and 0.84 [0.74-0.96], respectively, for nonaspirin NSAIDs). There was no association among women of normal weight (body mass index<25 kg/ m2, Pheterogeneity 0.04 for aspirin, Pheterogeneity 1/4 0.003 for NSAIDs). Among overweight and obese women, the inverse association with aspirin was stronger for use 2-6 times/ week (OR 1/4 0.81, 95% CI 0.68-0.96) than for daily use (0.91, 0.80-1.03), possibly because a high proportion of daily users use low-dose formulations. There was no clear association with use of acetaminophen. Conclusion: Our pooled analysis provides further evidence that use of standard-dose aspirin or other NSAIDs may reduce risk of endometrial cancer among overweight and obese women.Peer reviewe
