Can the Lepton Flavor Mixing Matrix Be Symmetric?
Current neutrino oscillation data indicate that the 3x3 lepton flavor mixing
matrix V is likely to be symmetric about its V_{e3}-V_{\mu 2}-V_{\tau 1} axis.
This off-diagonal symmetry corresponds to three pairs of {\it congruent}
unitarity triangles in the complex plane. Terrestrial matter effects can
substantially modify the genuine CP-violating parameter and off-diagonal
asymmetries of V in realistic long-baseline experiments of neutrino
oscillations.Comment: RexTex 14 pages (4 PS figures). More discussions adde
Attosecond gamma-ray pulses via nonlinear Compton scattering in the radiation dominated regime
The feasibility of generation of bright ultrashort gamma-ray pulses is
demonstrated in the interaction of a relativistic electron bunch with a
counterpropagating tightly-focused superstrong laser beam in the radiation
dominated regime. The Compton scattering spectra of gamma-radiation are
investigated using a semiclassical description for the electron dynamics in the
laser field and a quantum electrodynamical description for the photon emission.
We demonstrate the feasibility of ultrashort gamma-ray bursts of hundreds of
attoseconds and of dozens of megaelectronvolt photon energies in the
near-backwards direction of the initial electron motion. The tightly focused
laser field structure and radiation reaction are shown to be responsible for
such short gamma-ray bursts which are independent of the durations of the
electron bunch and of the laser pulse. The results are measurable with the
laser technology available in a near-future
Feasibility of electron cyclotron autoresonance acceleration by a short terahertz pulse
A vacuum autoresonance accelerator scheme for electrons, which employs
terahertz radiation and currently available magnetic fields, is suggested.
Based on numerical simulations, parameter values, which could make the scheme
experimentally feasible, are identified and discussed
Padé approximation of delays in CACC-controlled string-stable platoons
Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) improves road throughput by employing inter-vehicle wireless communications. The inherent communication time delay significantly limits the minimum intervehicle distance in view of string stability. Applying a Padé approximation leads to a model with a rational transfer function, which allows many control methods to compensate for this delay to a certain extent. Our objective is to find the lowest possible order of Padé approximations, which is sufficiently accurate in view of string stability. To this end, the minimum string-stable time gaps are chosen as the main criterion against which the quality of the Padé approximations is measured. The results indicate that it is feasible to apply a 2nd-order Padé approximation in the given CACC system.</p
Efficiency of Energy Transduction in a Molecular Chemical Engine
A simple model of the two-state ratchet type is proposed for molecular
chemical engines that convert chemical free energy into mechanical work and
vice versa. The engine works by catalyzing a chemical reaction and turning a
rotor. Analytical expressions are obtained for the dependences of rotation and
reaction rates on the concentrations of reactant and product molecules, from
which the performance of the engine is analyzed. In particular, the efficiency
of energy transduction is discussed in some detail.Comment: 4 pages, 4 fugures; title modified, figures 2 and 3 modified, content

Global closed-form approximation of free boundary for optimal investment stopping problems
In this paper we study a utility maximization problem with both optimal control and opti-mal stopping in a finite time horizon. The value function can be characterized by a variationalequation that involves a free boundary problem of a fully nonlinear partial differential equation.Using the dual control method, we derive the asymptotic properties of the dual value functionand the associated dual free boundary for a class of utility functions, including power and non-HARA utilities. We construct a global closed-form approximation to the dual free boundary, which greatly reduces the computational cost. Using the duality relation, we find the approx-imate formulas for the optimal value function, trading strategy, and exercise boundary for theoptimal investment stopping problem. Numerical examples show the approximation is robust, accurate and fast
High-quality multi-GeV electron bunches via cyclotron autoresonance
Autoresonance laser acceleration of electrons is theoretically investigated
using circularly polarized focused Gaussian pulses. Many-particle simulations
demonstrate feasibility of creating over 10-GeV electron bunches of ultra-high
quality (relative energy spread of order 10^-4), suitable for fundamental
high-energy particle physics research. The laser peak intensities and axial
magnetic field strengths required are up to about 10^18 W/cm^2 (peak power ~10
PW) and 60 T, respectively. Gains exceeding 100 GeV are shown to be possible
when weakly focused pulses from a 200-PW laser facility are used
