Homotopy Method for the Large, Sparse, Real Nonsymmetric Eigenvalue Problem
A homotopy method to compute the eigenpairs, i.e., the eigenvectors and eigenvalues, of a given real matrix A1 is presented. From the eigenpairs of some real matrix A0, the eigenpairs of
A(t) ⥠(1 â t)A0 + tA1
are followed at successive "times" from t = 0 to t = 1 using continuation. At t = 1, the eigenpairs of the desired matrix A1 are found. The following phenomena are present when following the eigenpairs of a general nonsymmetric matrix:
âą bifurcation,
âą ill conditioning due to nonorthogonal eigenvectors,
âą jumping of eigenpaths.
These can present considerable computational difficulties. Since each eigenpair can be followed independently, this algorithm is ideal for concurrent computers. The homotopy method has the potential to compete with other algorithms for computing a few eigenvalues of large, sparse matrices. It may be a useful tool for determining the stability of a solution of a PDE. Some numerical results will be presented
FeAs-based superconductivity: a case study of the effects of transition metal doping on BaFe2As2
The recently discovered FeAs-based superconductors are a new, promising set
of materials for both technological as well as basic research. They offer
transition temperatures as high as 55 K as well as essentially isotropic and
extremely large upper, superconducting critical fields in excess of 40 T at 20
K. In addition they may well provide insight into exotic superconductivity that
extends beyond just FeAs-based superconductivity, perhaps even shedding light
on the still perplexing CuO-based high-Tc materials. Whereas superconductivity
can be induced in the RFeAsO (R = rare earth) and AEFe2As2 (AE = Ba, Sr, Ca))
families by a number of means, transition metal doping of BaFe2As2, e.g.
Ba(Fe1-xTMx)2As2, offers the easiest experimental access to a wide set of
materials. In this review we present an overview and summary of the effect of
TM doping (TM = Co, Ni, Cu, Pd, and Rh) on BaFe2As2. The resulting phase
diagrams reveal the nature of the interaction between the structural, magnetic
and superconducting phase transitions in these compounds and delineate a region

Understanding the role of chromatin remodeling in the regulation of circadian transcription in Drosophila.
Circadian clocks enable organisms to anticipate daily changes in the environment and coordinate temporal rhythms in physiology and behavior with the 24-h day-night cycle. The robust cycling of circadian gene expression is critical for proper timekeeping, and is regulated by transcription factor binding, RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) recruitment and elongation, and post-transcriptional mechanisms. Recently, it has become clear that dynamic alterations in chromatin landscape at the level of histone posttranslational modification and nucleosome density facilitate rhythms in transcription factor recruitment and RNAPII activity, and are essential for progression through activating and repressive phases of circadian transcription. Here, we discuss the characterization of the BRAHMA (BRM) chromatin-remodeling protein in Drosophila in the context of circadian clock regulation. By dissecting its catalytic vs. non-catalytic activities, we propose a model in which the non-catalytic activity of BRM functions to recruit repressive factors to limit the transcriptional output of CLOCK (CLK) during the active phase of circadian transcription, while the primary function of the ATP-dependent catalytic activity is to tune and prevent over-recruitment of negative regulators by increasing nucleosome density. Finally, we divulge ongoing efforts and investigative directions toward a deeper mechanistic understanding of transcriptional regulation of circadian gene expression at the chromatin level
Managing Urban Classrooms: Exploring Beginning Teachersâ Beliefs, Actions, and Influences of Classroom Management.
Beginning teachers struggle with classroom management, which is especially problematic for urban schools and other low-achieving, high-poverty environments that employ a disproportionate number of beginning teachers. These teachers tend to enter classrooms unprepared to deal with student misbehavior and tend not to receive adequate support to improve over time. In order to develop beginning teachers as effective classroom managers prior to and within their full-time placement, more needs to be learned about how beginning teachers manage their urban classrooms.
This descriptive, mixed method study of one interim certification program explores first year urban teachersâ classroom management experience. I investigate how teachers conceptualize classroom management, what actions they implement to manage the classroom, and who or what they report as helping them to develop in classroom management. Programmatic surveys of 87 first year teachers provide broad trends of teachersâ beliefs, actions, and influences, while interviews, field visits, video recordings, and journals detail five case participantsâ experiences throughout the year. Case study analyses indicate that teachers differed in the degree to which they emphasized relational dimensions of classroom management. Relatedly, teachers who reported relational beliefs on their program surveys received higher evaluation ratings as compared to teachers who did not report relational beliefs. This study also indicates that teachers felt they improved most as classroom managers when school and program personnel provided them with specific and timely feedback about alternative methods to manage classrooms, and when they learned from their mistakes during clinical and classroom experience.
These findings have implications for teacher preparation and professional development on how to support teachers in managing classrooms. Findings suggest designing teacher education to emphasize a relational approach to classroom management that underscores the importance of establishing a safe environment and using strategies to promote positive interactions in the classroom. These findings also suggest improving how we prepare classroom managers by increasing the frequency that teacher educators observe new teachers and by offering feedback that is more targeted and presents alternative methods of managing classrooms.PhDEducational StudiesUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Syntheses, Structures, and Photoluminescence of 1-D Lanthanide Coordination Polymers
Five new lanthanide 1-D coordination polymers are reported which are formed from flexible salen type Schiff-base ligands H(2)L and H(2)L' (H(2)L = N, N(1)-ethylene bis(salicylideneimine); H(2)L' = N,N(1)-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene) ethylene-1,2-diamine). The polymeric structures are formed by bridging neutral H(2)L units in the case of {[Ln(2)L(2)(CF(3)SO(3))(H(2)L)(4)(MeOH)]center dot CF(3)SO(3)}(n) (Ln = Eu (1), Nd (2) and Er (3)), and by acetate (OAc(-)) groups in [Yb(2)(L)(2)(OAc)(2)(MeOH)(2)](n) (4) and {[Tb(3)(L')(2)(OAc)(5)]center dot Et(2)O center dot(MeOH)(0.5)}(n) (5). Regional and local contributions to ambient non-methane volatile organic compounds at a polluted rural/coastal site in Pearl River Delta, China
Identification of major sources of airborne pollutants and their contribution to pollutant loadings are critical in developing effective pollution control and mitigation strategies. In this study, a comprehensive dataset of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) collected from August 2001 to December 2002 at a polluted rural/coastal site in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) is analyzed to assess the relative contributions of major pollution sources to ambient NMVOC mixing ratios. A unique approach based on emission ratios of individual chemical species was used to classify the bulk air samples in order to apportion regional and local source contributions to the measured mixing ratios. The collected air samples fell into four major groups, including air masses from the inner PRD region and Hong Kong (HK) urban area. To estimate the source apportionment of NMVOCs, a principal component analysis/absolute principal component scores receptor model was applied to the classified data points. The results indicate that the regional and local source contributions to ambient NMVOC levels at the site were significantly different due to the differences in local versus regional energy use and industrial activities. For air masses originating from HK, vehicular emissions accounted for approximately 39% of the total NMVOC levels, followed by industrial emissions (35%), gasoline evaporation (14%) and commercial/domestic liquefied petroleum gas/natural gas use (12%). By contrast, for air masses originating from the PRD the industrial emissions accounted for 43% of the total NMVOC burden, followed by vehicular emissions (32%) and biomass burning (25%). In particular, the higher regional contribution of biomass burning found in this study as compared to existing emission inventories suggests that further efforts are necessary to refine the emission inventories of NMVOCs in the PRD region. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Measurements of trace gases in the inflow of South China Sea background air and outflow of regional pollution at Tai O, Southern China
We present a 16-month record of ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), total reactive nitrogen (NOy), sulphur dioxide (SO2), methane (CH4), C2 - C8 non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), C1 - C2 halocarbons, and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) measured at a southern China coastal site. The study aimed to establish/update seasonal profiles of chemically active trace gases and pollution tracers in subtropical Asia and to characterize the composition of the 'background' atmosphere over the South China Sea (SCS) and of pollution outflow from the industrialized Pearl River Delta (PRD) region and southern China. Most of the measured trace gases of anthropogenic origin exhibited a winter maximum and a summer minimum, while O3 showed a maximum in autumn which is in contrast to the seasonal behavior of O3 in rural eastern China and in many mid-latitude remote locations in the western Pacific. The data were segregated into two groups representing the SCS background air and the outflow of regional continental pollution (PRD plus southern China), based on CO mixing ratios and meteorological conditions. NMHCs and halocarbon data were further analyzed to examine the relationships between their variability and atmospheric lifetime and to elucidate the extent of atmospheric processing in the sampled air parcels. The trace gas variability (S) versus lifetime (Ï) relationship, defined by the power law, Slnx = AÏ-b, (where X is the trace gas mixing ratio) gives a fit parameter A of 1.39 and exponent b of 0.42 for SCS air, and A of 2.86 and b of 0.31 for the regional continental air masses. An examination of ln[n-butane]/ln[ethane] versus ln[propane]/ln[ethane] indicates that their relative abundance was dominated by mixing as opposed to photochemistry in both SCS and regional outflow air masses. The very low ratios of ethyne/CO, propane/ethane and toluene/benzene suggest that the SCS air mass has undergone intense atmospheric processing since these gases were released into the atmosphere. Compared to the results from other polluted rural sites and from urban areas, the large values of these species in the outflow of PRD/southern China suggest source(s) emitting higher levels of ethyne, benzene, and toluene, relative to light alkanes. These chemical characteristics could be unique indicators of anthropogenic emissions from southern China. © Springer Science + Business Media, Inc. 2005
The Circumstellar Extinction of Planetary Nebulae
We analyze the dependence of circumstellar extinction on core mass for the
brightest planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds and M31. We show
that in all three galaxies, a statistically significant correlation exists
between the two quantities, such that high core mass objects have greater
extinction. We model this behavior, and show that the relation is a simple
consequence of the greater mass loss and faster evolution times of high mass
stars. The relation is important because it provides a natural explanation for
the invariance of the [O III] 5007 planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF)
with population age: bright Population I PNe are extinguished below the cutoff
of the PNLF. It also explains the counter-intuitive observation that
intrinsically luminous Population I PNe often appear fainter than PNe from

Morphological Properties of PPNs: Mid-IR and HST Imaging Surveys
We will review our mid-infrared and HST imaging surveys of the circumstellar
dust shells of proto-planetary nebulae. While optical imaging indirectly probes
the dust distribution via dust-scattered starlight, mid-IR imaging directly
maps the distribution of warm dust grains. Both imaging surveys revealed
preferencially axisymmetric nature of PPN dust shells, suggesting that
axisymmetry in planetary nebulae sets in by the end of the asymptotic giant
branch phase, most likely by axisymmetric superwind mass loss. Moreover, both
surveys yielded two morphological classes which have one-to-one correspondence
between the two surveys, indicating that the optical depth of circumstellar
dust shells plays an equally important role as the inclination angle in
