Microscopic Evidence for Evolution of Superconductivity by Effective Carrier Doping in Boron-doped Diamond:11B-NMR study

We have investigated the superconductivity discovered in boron (B)-doped diamonds by means of 11B-NMR on heteroepitaxially grown (111) and (100) films. 11B-NMR spectra for all of the films are identified to arise from the substitutional B(1) site as single occupation and lower symmetric B(2) site substituted as boron+hydrogen(B+H) complex, respectively. A clear evidence is presented that the effective carriers introduced by B(1) substitution are responsible for the superconductivity, whereas the charge neutral B(2) sites does not offer the carriers effectively. The result is also corroborated by the density of states deduced by 1/T1T measurement, indicating that the evolution of superconductivity is driven by the effective carrier introduced by substitution at B(1) site.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Phys. Low-energy electrodynamics of superconducting diamond

Heavily-boron-doped diamond films become superconducting with critical temperatures TcT_c well above 4 K. Here we first measure the reflectivity of such a film down to 5 cm1^{-1}, by also using Coherent Synchrotron Radiation. We thus determine the optical gap, the field penetration depth, the range of action of the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule, and the electron-phonon spectral function. We conclude that diamond behaves as a dirty BCS superconductor.Comment: 4 pages including 3 figure

A note on Verhulst's logistic equation and related logistic maps

We consider the Verhulst logistic equation and a couple of forms of the corresponding logistic maps. For the case of the logistic equation we show that using the general Riccati solution only changes the initial conditions of the equation. Next, we consider two forms of corresponding logistic maps reporting the following results. For the map x_{n+1} = rx_n(1 - x_n) we propose a new way to write the solution for r = -2 which allows better precision of the iterative terms, while for the map x_{n+1}-x_n = rx_n(1 - x_{n+1}) we show that it behaves identically to the logistic equation from the standpoint of the general Riccati solution, which is also provided herein for any value of the parameter r.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 7 references with title

Bethe ansatz at q=0 and periodic box-ball systems

A class of periodic soliton cellular automata is introduced associated with crystals of non-exceptional quantum affine algebras. Based on the Bethe ansatz at q=0, we propose explicit formulas for the dynamical period and the size of certain orbits under the time evolution in A^{(1)}_n case.Comment: 12 pages, Introduction expanded, Summary added and minor modifications mad

Advantage on Superconductivity of Heavily Boron-Doped (111) Diamond Films

The superconductivity transition temperatures Tc(onset) of 11.4 K and Tc(offset) of 7.4 K, which are the highest in diamond at present, are realized on homoepitaxially grown (111) diamond films with a high boron doping concentration of 8.4E21 cm-3 (4.7 atomic percent). Tc values of (111) diamond films are more than twice as high as those of (100) films at the equivalent boron concentration. The Tc of boron-doped (111) diamond increases as the boron content increases up to the maximum incorporated concentration and is agrees with the value estimated using McMillan's equation. The advantageous Tc for (111) diamond films is due to the higher carrier concentration which exceeds its boron concentration.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure

Characterization of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates: Occurrence rates, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, and molecular typing in the global SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program, 1997-1999

During 1997–1999, a total of 70,067 isolates (6631 Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates) were analyzed in the SENTRY program by geographic region and body site of infection. The respiratory tract was the most common source of P. aeruginosa. P. aeruginosa isolation rates increased during the study interval. Europe was the only region to show a significant decline in β-lactam and aminoglycoside susceptibility rates. There was a reduction in the rates of susceptibility of Canadian isolates to imipenem and of Latin American isolates to meropenem. A total of 218 multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates (MDR-PSA; resistant to piperacillin, ceftazidime, imipenem, and gentamicin) were observed; MDR-PSA occurrence rates (percentages of all isolates) ranged from 8.2% (Latin America) to 0.9% (Canada). No antimicrobial inhibited >50% of MDR-PSA strains. Molecular characterization of selected, generally resistant strains was performed. Isolates showing unique ribogroups were found in Europe, Latin America, and the United States, but clonal spread was documented in several medical centers.A. C. Gales, R. N. Jones, J. Turnidge, R. Involvement of P2X and P2Y receptors in microglial activation in vivo

Microglial cells are the primary immune effector cells in the brain. Extracellular ATP, e.g., released after brain injury, may initiate microglial activation via stimulation of purinergic receptors. In the rat nucleus accumbens (NAc), the involvement of P2X and P2Y receptors in the generation of microglial reaction in vivo was investigated. A stab wound in the NAc increased immunoreactivity (IR) for P2X1,2,4,7 and P2Y1,2,4,6,12 receptors on microglial cells when visualized with confocal laser scanning microscopy. A prominent immunolabeling of P2X7 receptors with antibodies directed against the ecto- or endodomain was found on Griffonia simplicifolia isolectin-B4-positive cells. Additionally, the P2X7 receptor was colocalized with active caspase 3 but not with the anti-apoptotic marker pAkt. Four days after local application of the agonists α,βmeATP, ADPβS, 2MeSATP, and BzATP, an increase in OX 42- and G. simplicifolia isolectin-IR was observed around the stab wound, quantified both densitometrically and by counting the number of ramified and activated microglial cells, whereas UTPγS appeared to be ineffective. The P2 receptor antagonists PPADS and BBG decreased the injury-induced increase of these IRs when given alone and in addition inhibited the agonist effects. Further, the intra-accumbally applied P2X7 receptor agonist BzATP induced an increase in the number of caspase-3-positive cells. These results indicate that ATP, acting via different P2X and P2Y receptors, is a signaling molecule in microglial cell activation after injury in vivo. The up-regulation of P2X7-IR after injury suggests that this receptor is involved in apoptotic rather than proliferative effects

Critical Roles of the WASP N-Terminal Domain and Btk in LPS-Induced Inflammatory Response in Macrophages

While Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP) plays critical roles in TCR signaling as an adaptor molecule, how it transduces innate immune signals remains to be elucidated. To investigate the roles of WASP in innate immune cells, we established bone marrow-derived macrophage (BMDM) cell lines from WASP15 transgenic (Tg) mice overexpressing the WASP N-terminal region (exons 1–5). Upon LPS stimulation, WASP15 Tg BMDM cell lines produce lower levels of inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-12p40 than the wild-type BMDM cell line. In addition, the production of nitric oxide by WASP15 Tg BMDM cells in response to LPS and IFN-γ was significantly impaired. Furthermore, we uncovered that the WASP N-terminal domain associates with the Src homology (SH) 3 domain of Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk). Overexpression of the WASP N-terminal domain diminishes the extent of tyrosine phosphorylation of endogenous WASP in WASP15 Tg BMDM cells, possibly by interfering with the specific binding between endogenous WASP and Btk during LPS signaling. These observations strongly suggest that the interaction between WASP N-terminal domain and Btk plays important roles in the LPS signaling cascade in innate immunity
