    Biometrics for Emotion Detection (BED): Exploring the combination of Speech and ECG

    The paradigm Biometrics for Emotion Detection (BED) is introduced, which enables unobtrusive emotion recognition, taking into account varying environments. It uses the electrocardiogram (ECG) and speech, as a powerful but rarely used combination to unravel peopleā€™s emotions. BED was applied in two environments (i.e., office and home-like) in which 40 people watched 6 film scenes. It is shown that both heart rate variability (derived from the ECG) and, when peopleā€™s gender is taken into account, the standard deviation of the fundamental frequency of speech indicate peopleā€™s experienced emotions. As such, these measures validate each other. Moreover, it is found that peopleā€™s environment can indeed of influence experienced emotions. These results indicate that BED might become an important paradigm for unobtrusive emotion detection

    Biosignals as an Advanced Man-Machine Interface

    As is known for centuries, humans exhibit an electrical profile. This profile is altered through various physiological processes, which can be measured through biosignals; e.g., electromyography (EMG) and electrodermal activity (EDA). These biosignals can reveal our emotions and, as such, can serve as an advanced man-machine interface (MMI) for empathic consumer products. However, such an MMI requires the correct classification of biosignals to emotion classes. This paper explores the use of EDA and three facial EMG signals to determine neutral, positive, negative, and mixed emotions, using recordings of 24 people. A range of techniques is tested, which resulted in a generic framework for automated emotion classification with up to 61.31% correct classification of the four emotion classes, without the need of personal profiles. Among various other directives for future research, the results emphasize the need for both personalized biosignal-profiles and the recording of multiple biosignals in parallel

    Thermal stability of ultrasoft Feā€“Zrā€“N films

    The thermal stability of nanocrystalline ultrasoft magnetic (Fe98Zr2)1āˆ’xNx films with x = 0.10ā€“0.25 was studied using thermal desorption spectrometry, positron beam analysis and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results demonstrate that grain growth during the heat treatment is accompanied by an increase of the free volume and nitrogen relocation and desorption. All these phenomena can drastically degrade the ultrasoft magnetic properties. The nitrogen desorption has already started at temperatures around 400 K. Nevertheless, most of the nitrogen leaves the sample at a temperature above 800 K. We found that nitrogen out-diffusion is significantly retarded compared with the prediction of the diffusion in bulk Ī±-Fe. A qualitative model is proposed in which the nitrogen out-diffusion in nanocrystalline material is retarded by trapping at immobile defects, namely Zr atoms, and also by voids at grain boundaries. From a certain temperature, nitrogen migrates from the interior of the nanograins to the nanovoids at the grain boundaries and the out-diffusion to the outer surface is controlled by transport between the voids.

    Identifying prognostic factors for clinical outcomes and costs in four high-volume surgical treatments using routinely collected hospital data

    Identifying prognostic factors (PFs) is often costly and labor-intensive. Routinely collected hospital data provide opportunities to identify clinically relevant PFs and construct accurate prognostic models without additional data-collection costs. This multicenter (66 hospitals) study reports on associations various patient-level variables have with outcomes and costs. Outcomes were in-hospital mortality, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, length of stay, 30-day readmission, 30-day reintervention and in-hospital costs. Candidate PFs were age, sex, Elixhauser Comorbidity Score, prior hospitalizations, prior days spent in hospital, and socio-economic status. Included patients dealt with either colorectal carcinoma (CRC, n = 10,254), urinary bladder carcinoma (UBC, n = 17,385), acute percutaneous coronary intervention (aPCI, n = 25,818), or total knee arthroplasty (TKA, n = 39,214). Prior hospitalization significantly increased readmission risk in all treatments (OR between 2.15 and 25.50), whereas prior days spent in hospital decreased this risk (OR between 0.55 and 0.95). In CRC patients, women had lower risk of in-hospital mortality (OR 0.64), ICU admittance (OR 0.68) and 30-day reintervention (OR 0.70). Prior hospitalization was the strongest PF for higher costs across all treatments (31ā€“64% costs increase/hospitalization). Prognostic model performance (c-statistic) ranged 0.67ā€“0.92, with Brier scores below 0.08. R-squared ranged from 0.06ā€“0.19 for LoS and 0.19ā€“0.38 for costs. Identified PFs should be considered as building blocks for treatment-specific prognostic models and information for monitoring patients after surgery. Researchers and clinicians might benefit from gaining a better insight into the drivers behind (costs) prognosis

    Homesickness in social context:An ecological momentary assessment study among 1st-year university students

    Homesickness is common among university students and associated with mental health problems. Most previous studies assessed homesickness as a summary of the past weeks. However, there may be significant fluctuations across situations. At the current residence, homesickness may especially be triggered during (phone) interactions with attachment figures. Dutch and international 1st-year students (n = 92) completed the Utrecht Homesickness Scale and subsequently used a smartphone application to record social interactions for 14 days (ecological momentary assessment [EMA]). For each interaction they reported the social context (e.g. location, contact type) and their affective state, including homesickness. Homesickness in the past weeks and momentary homesickness were both higher in international students than in Dutch students. Feeling homesick was highest at participants' current residency, when interacting with parents, or when using video-chat. When participants felt more homesick, they reported less pleasant and more unpleasant affect. In conclusion, EMA provided insight in cross-situational variations in homesickness

    Bulk Fermi surface and momentum density in heavily doped La2āˆ’x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_4 using high resolution Compton scattering and positron annihilation spectroscopies

    We have observed the bulk Fermi surface (FS) in an overdoped (xx=0.3) single crystal of La2āˆ’x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_4 by using Compton scattering. A two-dimensional (2D) momentum density reconstruction from measured Compton profiles yields a clear FS signature in the third Brillouin zone along [100]. The quantitative agreement between density functional theory (DFT) calculations and momentum density experiment suggests that Fermi-liquid physics is restored in the overdoped regime. In particular the predicted FS topology is found to be in good accord with the corresponding experimental data. We find similar quantitative agreement between the measured 2D angular correlation of positron annihilation radiation (2D-ACAR) spectra and the DFT based computations. However, 2D-ACAR does not give such a clear signature of the FS in the extended momentum space in either the theory or the experiment.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
