An ecological life table for eggs and nymphs of Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) was constructed with data obtained from orange orchards (Citrus sinensis Osbeck) in 2 regions of the State of São Paulo, over 4 generations in the period from XI-2006 to V-2007, comprising spring, summer, and fall seasons. Young growing shoots with D. citri eggs present were identifed, and live individuals were counted until adult emergence. No predatory arthropods were observed in association with D. citri eggs and nymphs during the study. The mean parasitism of fourth- and ffth-instar nymphs by Tamarixia radiata Waterston (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) was 2.3%. The durations of the egg–adult period were similar among the 4 generations, ranging from 18.0 to 24.7 d (at mean temperatures ranging from 21.6 to 26.0 °C) and followed the temperature requirement models obtained in the laboratory for D. citri. However, survival from the egg to the adult stage for the same period varied considerably from 1.7 to 21.4%; the highest mortalities were observed in the egg and small nymphal (frst- to thirdinstar) stages, which were considered to be key phases for population growth of the pest.

Scaling of spontaneous rotation with temperature and plasma current in tokamaks

    Get PDF
Using theoretical arguments, a simple scaling law for the size of the intrinsic rotation observed in tokamaks in the absence of momentum injection is found: the velocity generated in the core of a tokamak must be proportional to the ion temperature difference in the core divided by the plasma current, independent of the size of the device. The constant of proportionality is of the order of 10kms1MAkeV110\,\mathrm{km \cdot s^{-1} \cdot MA \cdot keV^{-1}}. When the intrinsic rotation profile is hollow, i.e. it is counter-current in the core of the tokamak and co-current in the edge, the scaling law presented in this Letter fits the data remarkably well for several tokamaks of vastly different size and heated by different mechanisms.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Considering Fluctuation Energy as a Measure of Gyrokinetic Turbulence

In gyrokinetic theory there are two quadratic measures of fluctuation energy, left invariant under nonlinear interactions, that constrain the turbulence. The recent work of Plunk and Tatsuno [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 165003 (2011)] reported on the novel consequences that this constraint has on the direction and locality of spectral energy transfer. This paper builds on that work. We provide detailed analysis in support of the results of Plunk and Tatsuno but also significantly broaden the scope and use additional methods to address the problem of energy transfer. The perspective taken here is that the fluctuation energies are not merely formal invariants of an idealized model (two-dimensional gyrokinetics) but are general measures of gyrokinetic turbulence, i.e. quantities that can be used to predict the behavior of the turbulence. Though many open questions remain, this paper collects evidence in favor of this perspective by demonstrating in several contexts that constrained spectral energy transfer governs the dynamics.Comment: Final version as published. Brillouin light scattering study of Co2_{2}Cr0.6_{0.6}Fe0.4_{0.4}Al and Co2_{2}FeAl Heusler compounds

The thermal magnonic spectra of Co2_{2}Cr0.6_{0.6}Fe0.4_{0.4}Al (CCFA) and Co2_2FeAl were investigated using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy (BLS). For CCFA, the exchange constant A (exchange stiffness D) is found to be 0.48 μ\muerg/cm (203 meV A2^2), while for Co2_2FeAl the corresponding values of 1.55 μ\muerg/cm (370 meV A2^2) were found. The observed asymmetry in the BLS spectra between the Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies was assigned to an interplay between the asymmetrical profiles of hybridized Damon-Esbach and perpendicular standing spin-wave modes, combined with the optical sensitivity of the BLS signal to the upper side of the CCFA or Co2_2FeAl film

    Vector Bin Packing with Multiple-Choice

We consider a variant of bin packing called multiple-choice vector bin packing. In this problem we are given a set of items, where each item can be selected in one of several DD-dimensional incarnations. We are also given TT bin types, each with its own cost and DD-dimensional size. Our goal is to pack the items in a set of bins of minimum overall cost. The problem is motivated by scheduling in networks with guaranteed quality of service (QoS), but due to its general formulation it has many other applications as well. We present an approximation algorithm that is guaranteed to produce a solution whose cost is about lnD\ln D times the optimum. For the running time to be polynomial we require D=O(1)D=O(1) and T=O(logn)T=O(\log n). This extends previous results for vector bin packing, in which each item has a single incarnation and there is only one bin type. To obtain our result we also present a PTAS for the multiple-choice version of multidimensional knapsack, where we are given only one bin and the goal is to pack a maximum weight set of (incarnations of) items in that bin

The main purpose of this Study was to asses the sanitary situation dealing with bovine tuberculosis in the Balsillas Valley, a region with previous referenced disease. All the bovines with six weeks of age were tested one by one in each farm from this geografical area. The study was iniciated in July, 1987 and up to now 17.612 animals have been tested with 623 positive reactors to PPD. All infected animals were killed and Mcohaeieriu,n boris was isolated from lymph nodes from seven animals. A series of sanitary measures were taken in order to control the disease. These preventive measures have demostrated to be effective and initial prevalence of 9.82% in 1987 decreased to 1 .05% in 1990. We recommend to continue such activities in order to avoid the transmission of tuberculosis to farms uninfected areas and to minimize the possibility of reinfection to cleaned farms. We note that it is important to prevent the transmission of tuberculosisi to other animal species including the man.

Regional ventilation changes in the lung: Treatment response mapping by using hyperpolarized gas MR imaging as a quantitative biomarker

    Get PDF
Purpose: To assess the magnitude of regional response to respiratory therapeutics in the lungs using Treatment Response Mapping (TRM) with hyperpolarized gas MRI. TRM is used to quantify regional physiological response in asthmatic adults using a bronchodilator challenge. Methods: The study was approved by the national research ethics committee and performed with informed consent. Imaging was performed in 20 adult asthmatic patients using hyperpolarized 3He ventilation MRI. Two sets of baseline images were acquired before inhalation of a bronchodilator (Inhaled Salbutamol 400 mcg) and one set was acquired after. All images were registered for voxelwise comparison. Regional treatment response, ΔR(r), is calculated as the difference in regional gas distribution (R(r) = ratio of inhaled gas to total volume of a voxel when normalized for lung inflation volume) before and after intervention. A voxelwise activation threshold from the variability of the baseline images was applied to ΔR(r) maps. The summed global TRM (ΔRnet) was then used as global lung index for comparison with metrics of bronchodilator response measured using spirometry and the global imaging metric, percentage ventilated volume (%VV). Results: ΔRnet showed significant correlation (p<0.01) with changes in FEV1 (r=0.70), FVC (r=0.84) and %VV (r=0.56). A significant (p<0.01) positive treatment effect was detected by all metrics, however ΔRnet showed a lower inter-subject coefficient of variation (CV=64%) than all of the other tests (CV≥99%). Conclusions: TRM provides regional quantitative information on changes in inhaled gas ventilation in response to therapy. This method could be used as sensitive regional outcome metric of novel respiratory interventions. Online supplemental material is available for this article

On Duality in the Born-Infeld Theory

The SL(2,R)SL(2,R) duality symmetric action for the Born-Infeld theory in terms of two potentials, coupled with non-trivial backgroud fields in four dimensions is established. This construction is carried out in detail by analysing the hamiltonian structure of the Born-Infeld theory. The equivalence with the usual Born-Infeld theory is shown.Comment: revtex, 4 page
