SKA HI end2end simulation
The current status of the HI simulation efforts is presented, in which a self
consistent simulation path is described and basic equations to calculate array
sensitivities are given. There is a summary of the SKA Design Study (SKADS) sky
simulation and a method for implementing it into the array simulator is
presented. A short overview of HI sensitivity requirements is discussed and

This is a real case involving an SME that produces southern hardwood finished lumber. The family business faces a social responsibility dilemma in terms of displaced workers and limited job opportunities in the surrounding labor market if they purchase a new saw that would modernize production, improve profitability, and eliminate 50 percent of their labor costs. The most logical employment for these workers would be a cutter, loader, or hauler of logs, which have been determined to be some of the most dangerous jobs in the United States. This case requires students to examine the decision-making process of a modest family business in a small, cohesive community and the ramifications of these decisions, as well as issues concerning technology and production improvements, displaced workers, social responsibilities, and the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees
The sub-millimeter properties of broad absorption line quasars
We have carried out the first systematic survey of the sub-millimeter
properties of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars. 30 BAL quasars drawn from a
homogeneously selected sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at redshifts
2<z<2.6 were observed with the SCUBA array at the JCMT to a typical rms
sensitivity of 2.5 mJy. Eight quasars were detected at > 2 sigma significance,
four of which are at > 3 sigma significance. The far-infrared luminosities of
these quasars are > 10^{13} L_solar. There is no correlation of sub-millimeter
flux with either the strength of the broad absorption feature or with absolute
magnitude in our sample. We compare the sub-millimeter flux distribution of the
BAL quasar sample with that of a sample of quasars which do not show BAL
features in their optical spectra and find that the two are indistinguishable.
BAL quasars do not have higher sub-millimeter luminosities than non-BAL
quasars. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that all quasars
would contain a BAL if viewed along a certain line-of-sight. The data are
inconsistent with a model in which the BAL phenomenon indicates a special
evolutionary stage which co-incides with a large dust mass in the host galaxy
and a high sub-millimeter luminosity. Our work provides constraints on

A submillimetre survey of the star-formation history of radio galaxies
We present the results of the first major systematic submillimetre survey of
radio galaxies spanning the redshift range 1 < z < 5. The primary aim of this
work is to elucidate the star-formation history of this sub-class of elliptical
galaxies by tracing the cosmological evolution of dust mass. Using SCUBA on the
JCMT we have obtained 850-micron photometry of 47 radio galaxies to a
consistent rms depth of 1 mJy, and have detected dust emission in 14 cases. The
radio galaxy targets have been selected from a series of low-frequency radio
surveys of increasing depth (3CRR, 6CE, etc), in order to allow us to separate
the effects of increasing redshift and increasing radio power on submillimetre
luminosity. Although the dynamic range of our study is inevitably small, we
find clear evidence that the typical submillimetre luminosity (and hence dust
mass) of a powerful radio galaxy is a strongly increasing function of redshift;
the detection rate rises from 15 per cent at z 2.5,
and the average submillimetre luminosity rises as (1+z)^3 out to z~4. Moreover
our extensive sample allows us to argue that this behaviour is not driven by
underlying correlations with other radio galaxy properties such as radio power,
radio spectral index, or radio source size/age. Although radio selection may
introduce other more subtle biases, the redshift distribution of our detected
objects is in fact consistent with the most recent estimates of the redshift
distribution of comparably bright submillimetre sources discovered in blank
field surveys. The evolution of submillimetre luminosity found here for radio

HST and UKIRT imaging observations of z ~ 1 6C radio galaxies - I. The data
The results of Hubble Space Telescope and UKIRT imaging observations are
presented for a sample of 11 6C radio galaxies with redshifts 0.85 < z < 1.5.
The observations of the 6C sources reveal a variety of different features,
similar to those observed around the higher luminosity of the aligned emission
appears less extreme in the case of the 6C radio galaxies. For both samples,
the aligned emission clearly cannot be explained by a single emission
mechanism; line emission and related nebular continuum emission, however, often

Deep spectroscopy of z~1 6C radio galaxies - II. Breaking the redshift-radio power degeneracy
The results of a spectroscopic analysis of 3CR and 6C radio galaxies at
redshift z~1 are contrasted with the properties of lower redshift radio
galaxies, chosen to be matched in radio luminosity to the 6C sources studied at
z~1, thus enabling the P-z degeneracy to be broken. Partial rank correlations
and principal component analysis have been used to determine which of z and P
are the critical parameters underlying the observed variation of the ionization
state andd kinematics of the emission line gas. [OII]/H-beta is shown to be a
useful ionization mechanism diagnostic. Statistical analysis of the data shows
that the ionization state of the emission line gas is strongly correlated with
radio power, once the effects of other parameters are removed. No dependence of
ionization state on z is observed, implying that the ionization state of the
emission line gas is solely a function of the AGN properties rather than the
hostt galaxy and/or environment. Statistical analysis of the kinematic
properties of the emission line gas shows that these are strongly correlated
independently withh both P and z. The correlation with redshift is the stronger
of the two, suggesting that host galaxy composition or environment may play a
role in producing the less extreme gas kinematics observed in the emission line
regions of low redshift galaxies. For both the ionization and kinematic
properties of thee galaxies, the independent correlations observed with radio
size are strongest. Radio source age is a determining factor for the extended

The optically-powerful quasar E1821+643 is associated with a 300-kpc scale FRI radio structure
We present a deep image of the optically-powerful quasar E1821+643 at 18cm
made with the Very Large Array (VLA). This image reveals radio emission, over
280 kpc in extent, elongated way beyond the quasar's host galaxy. Its radio
structure has decreasing surface brightness with increasing distance from the
bright core, characteristic of FRI sources (Fanaroff & Riley 1974). Its radio
luminosity at 5GHz falls in the classification for `radio-quiet' quasars (it is
only 10^23.9 W/Hz/sr; see e.g. Kellermann et al 1994). Its radio luminosity at
151MHz (which is 10^25.3 W/Hz/sr) is at the transition luminosity observed to
separate FRIs and FRIIs. Hitherto, no optically-powerful quasar had been found
to have a conventional FRI radio structure. For searches at low-frequency this
is unsurprising given current sensitivity and plausible radio spectral indices
for radio-quiet quasars. We demonstrate the inevitability of the extent of any
FRqI radio structures being seriously under-estimated by existing targetted
follow-up observations of other optically-selected quasars, which are typically
short exposures of z > 0.3 objects, and discuss the implications for the
purported radio bimodality in quasars.
The nature of the inner arcsec-scale jet in E1821+643, together with its
large-scale radio structure, suggest that the jet-axis in this quasar is
precessing (cf. Galactic jet sources such as SS433). A possible explanation for
this is that its central engine is a binary whose black holes have yet to
coalesce. The ubiquity of precession in `radio-quiet' quasars, perhaps as a
means of reducing the observable radio luminosity expected in highly-accreting
