This thesis examines how dominant French discursive frames conceptualize Muslim and French-Algerian women\u27s gender performance as related to their level of assimilation into France politically and socially. It examines how these modern discursive derive from colonial sentiments and policies towards Muslim Algerian women. Then, I outlines the specific frames used in discussion of French-Muslim women\u27s bodies and consider the international and national political contexts in which these frames developed. Finally, the thesis presents four interviews that I conducted in June 2018 with French-Algerian women, providing them a space to respond to elite framings of their decisions about how to present themselves as women, how to interact with men, and personal religious decisions

Modeling Expert Opinions on Food Healthiness: A Nutrition Metric

    Get PDF
Background Research over the last several decades indicates the failure of existing nutritional labels to substantially improve the healthiness of consumers' food and beverage choices. The difficulty for policy-makers is to encapsulate a wide body of scientific knowledge in a labeling scheme that is comprehensible to the average shopper. Here, we describe our method of developing a nutrition metric to fill this void. Methods We asked leading nutrition experts to rate the healthiness of 205 sample foods and beverages, and after verifying the similarity of their responses, we generated a model that calculates the expected average healthiness rating that experts would give to any other product based on its nutrient content. Results The form of the model is a linear regression that places weights on 12 nutritional components (total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrate, dietary fiber, sugars, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and iron) to predict the average healthiness rating that experts would give to any food or beverage. We provide sample predictions for other items in our database. Conclusions Major benefits of the model include its basis in expert judgment, its straightforward application, the flexibility of transforming its output ratings to any linear scale, and its ease of interpretation. This metric serves the purpose of distilling expert knowledge into a form usable by consumers so that they are empowered to make healthier decisions.

Corporate Governance In The Lodging Industry: Special Case Of The Service Industry

    Get PDF
This paper examines the corporate governance structure of publicly traded hospitality firms and determines whether the governance structure selected by these firms is consistent with minimizing monitoring and bonding costs dictated by the complexity of the business models. There is strong evidence that complex firms had larger board of directors, more outside board members, a greater fraction of CEO pay being variable, and more frequent occurrence of CEO/Chairman duality than simple firms. The results also present evidence of a positive relationship between firms that have the appropriate governance structures and the profitability and valuation of the firm

    Get PDF
This study focuses on students' speaking confidence and the lack thereof, which is one of the challenges that students encounter during class discussions. This occurrence motivated the researchers to determine the level of speaking confidence of GE2 completers at UM Digos College as the basis for the intervention program. Quantitative-descriptive research was carried out to determine the speaking confidence of UM Digos college students involving 383 randomly chosen students from 1st year to 4th year. Results revealed that UM Digos College students possess low speaking confidence. Moreover, statistical evidence showed a significant difference in year level, where first-year students significantly differ from third-year and fourth-year students since the first year has the lowest mean score. Thus, this research recommends implementing a program that addresses students' speaking challenges and provides intervention to improve their speaking confidence and participate in the classroom without hesitation.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
This study explored the social media experience in Facebook and Twitter and its relation to the emotional well-being conditions of twenty (20) senior high school students in Metro Manila. Online in-depth interviews were conducted that centered on the quality of their Facebook and Twitter experience, the prevalence of distress, negative emotions, and life satisfaction. Facebook and Twitter have been utilized for entertainment and maintenance of social networks online. However, Facebook has been maintained as a “les lieux de communication” or a space to communicate with friends, family members, and classmates. Yet, due to its “public” nature, the participants were inhibited from sharing their thoughts and feelings in their Facebook account. On the other hand, multiple Twitter accounts have been maintained: for public consumption and an “exclusive” account. This exclusive Twitter account has been maintained as a “les lieux de emotion” or a social space wherein they could be inhibited on what ideas, opinions, or sentiments they will share. Experiencing distress, negative emotions, and satisfaction with everyday life has been associated with utilization of Facebook and Twitter due to issues on accessibility and unwarranted information, lack of control on popping up pornographic materials, and the threat of hacking and breached in their “les lieux de communication” and “les lieux de emotion.” Moderation and vigilance should be maintained in utilizing social media accounts to mitigate the risks of negative experience and impact on one’s emotional well-being
