Radio pulsar timing observations for GRO
Gamma rays probably provide the best diagnostic tool for probing the enigmatic physics of pulsar magnetospheres. At present, however, only two pulsars - the young, nearby ones in the Crab and Vela X supernova remnants - are reliably detected at gamma-ray energies. With adequate radio observations to provide independent timing information, Gamma Ray Observatory should be able to detect a number of additional pulsars, and the results will be of great benefit in testing magnetospheric theories and models. Timing observations for this purpose were started at a number of radio observatories around the world. The general procedures being used are described. A status report on the work is given

Metaphor, Objects, and Commodities
This article is a contribution to a symposium that focuses on the ideas of Margaret Jane Radin as a point of departure, and particularly on her analyses of propertization and commodification. While Radin focuses on the harms associated with commodification of the person, relying on Hegel's idea of alienation, we argue that objectification, and in particular objectification of various features of the digital environment, may have important system benefits. We present an extended critique of Radin's analysis, basing the critique in part on Gadamer's argument that meaning and application are interrelated and that meaning changes with application. Central to this interplay is the speculative form of analysis that seeks to fix meaning, contrasted with metaphorical thought that seeks to undermine some fixed meanings and create new meanings through interpretation. The result is that speculative and metaphorical forms are conjoined in an interactive process through which new adaptations emerge. Taking this critique an additional step, we use examples from contemporary intellectual property law discourse to demonstrate how an interactive approach, grounded in metaphor, can yield important insights

Improving "bag-of-keypoints" image categorisation: Generative Models and PDF-Kernels
In this paper we propose two distinct enhancements to the basic
''bag-of-keypoints" image categorisation scheme proposed in [4]. In this
approach images are represented as a variable sized set of local image
features (keypoints). Thus, we require machine learning tools which
can operate on sets of vectors. In [4] this is achieved by representing
the set as a histogram over bins found by k-means. We show how this
approach can be improved and generalised using Gaussian Mixture Models
(GMMs). Alternatively, the set of keypoints can be represented directly
as a probability density function, over which a kernel can be de ned. This
approach is shown to give state of the art categorisation performance
Orbital Variability in the Eclipsing Pulsar Binary PSR B1957+20
We have conducted timing observations of the eclipsing millisecond binary
pulsar PSR~B1957+20, extending the span of data on this pulsar to more than
five years. During this time the orbital period of the system has varied by
roughly , changing quadratically with time
and displaying an orbital period second derivative s. The previous measurement of a large negative
orbital period derivative reflected only the short-term behavior of the system
during the early observations; the orbital period derivative is now positive
and increasing rapidly. If, as we suspect, the PSR~B1957+20 system is
undergoing quasi-cyclic orbital period variations similar to those found in
other close binaries such as Algol and RS CVn, then the
companion to PSR~B1957+20 is most likely non-degenerate, convective, and

Workshop on Moon in Transition: Apollo 14, KREEP, and Evolved Lunar Rocks
Lunar rocks provide material for analyzing lunar history and now new evaluation procedures are available for discovering new information from the Fra Mauro highlands rocks, which are different from any other lunar samples. These and other topics were discussed at this workshop, including a new evaluation of the nature and history of KREEP, granite, and other evolved lunar rock types, and ultimately a fresh evaluation of the transition of the moon from its early anorthosite-forming period to its later stages of KREEPy, granitic, and mare magmatism. The summary of presentations and discussion is based on notes taken by the respective summarizers during the workshop
