Comments on Closed Bianchi Models
We show several kinematical properties that are intrinsic to the Bianchi
models with compact spatial sections. Especially, with spacelike hypersurfaces
being closed, (A) no anisotropic expansion is allowed for Bianchi type V and
VII(A\not=0), and (B) type IV and VI(A\not=0,1) does not exist. In order to
show them, we put into geometric terms what is meant by spatial homogeneity and
employ a mathematical result on 3-manifolds. We make clear the relation between
the Bianchi type symmetry of space-time and spatial compactness, some part of
which seem to be unnoticed in the literature. Especially, it is shown under
what conditions class B Bianchi models do not possess compact spatial sections.
Finally we briefly describe how this study is useful in investigating global
dynamics in (3+1)-dimensional gravity.Comment: 14 pages with one table, KUCP-5
Dynamics of compact homogeneous universes
A complete description of dynamics of compact locally homogeneous universes
is given, which, in particular, includes explicit calculations of Teichm\"uller
deformations and careful counting of dynamical degrees of freedom. We regard
each of the universes as a simply connected four dimensional spacetime with
identifications by the action of a discrete subgroup of the isometry group. We
then reduce the identifications defined by the spacetime isometries to ones in
a homogeneous section, and find a condition that such spatial identifications
must satisfy. This is essential for explicit construction of compact
homogenoeus universes. Some examples are demonstrated for Bianchi II, VI,
VII, and I universal covers.Comment: 32 pages with 2 figures (LaTeX with epsf macro package
Regular Expression Subtyping for XML Query and Update Languages
XML database query languages such as XQuery employ regular expression types
with structural subtyping. Subtyping systems typically have two presentations,
which should be equivalent: a declarative version in which the subsumption rule
may be used anywhere, and an algorithmic version in which the use of
subsumption is limited in order to make typechecking syntax-directed and
decidable. However, the XQuery standard type system circumvents this issue by
using imprecise typing rules for iteration constructs and defining only
algorithmic typechecking, and another extant proposal provides more precise
types for iteration constructs but ignores subtyping. In this paper, we
consider a core XQuery-like language with a subsumption rule and prove the
completeness of algorithmic typechecking; this is straightforward for XQuery
proper but requires some care in the presence of more precise iteration typing
disciplines. We extend this result to an XML update language we have introduced
in earlier work.Comment: ESOP 2008. Companion technical report with proof
A Modular Invariant Quantum Theory From the Connection Formulation of (2+1)-Gravity on the Torus
By choosing an unconventional polarization of the connection phase space in
(2+1)-gravity on the torus, a modular invariant quantum theory is constructed.
Unitary equivalence to the ADM-quantization is shown.Comment: Latex, 4 page
Streaming Tree Transducers
Theory of tree transducers provides a foundation for understanding
expressiveness and complexity of analysis problems for specification languages
for transforming hierarchically structured data such as XML documents. We
introduce streaming tree transducers as an analyzable, executable, and
expressive model for transforming unranked ordered trees in a single pass.
Given a linear encoding of the input tree, the transducer makes a single
left-to-right pass through the input, and computes the output in linear time
using a finite-state control, a visibly pushdown stack, and a finite number of
variables that store output chunks that can be combined using the operations of
string-concatenation and tree-insertion. We prove that the expressiveness of
the model coincides with transductions definable using monadic second-order
logic (MSO). Existing models of tree transducers either cannot implement all
MSO-definable transformations, or require regular look ahead that prohibits
single-pass implementation. We show a variety of analysis problems such as
type-checking and checking functional equivalence are solvable for our model.Comment: 40 page
Complex joint probabilities as expressions of determinism in quantum mechanics
The density operator of a quantum state can be represented as a complex joint
probability of any two observables whose eigenstates have non-zero mutual
overlap. Transformations to a new basis set are then expressed in terms of
complex conditional probabilities that describe the fundamental relation
between precise statements about the three different observables. Since such
transformations merely change the representation of the quantum state, these
conditional probabilities provide a state-independent definition of the
deterministic relation between the outcomes of different quantum measurements.
In this paper, it is shown how classical reality emerges as an approximation to
the fundamental laws of quantum determinism expressed by complex conditional
probabilities. The quantum mechanical origin of phase spaces and trajectories
is identified and implications for the interpretation of quantum measurements
are considered. It is argued that the transformation laws of quantum
determinism provide a fundamental description of the measurement dependence of
empirical reality.Comment: 12 pages, including 1 figure, updated introduction includes

Quantum Bubble Dynamics in 2+1 Dimensional Gravity I: Geometrodynamic Approach
The Dirac quantization of a 2+1 dimensional bubble is performed. The bubble
consists of a string forming a boundary between two regions of space-time with
distinct geometries. The ADM constraints are solved and the coupling to the
string is introduced through the boundary conditions. The wave functional is
obtained and the quantum uncertainty in the radius of the ring is calculated;
this uncertainty becomes large at the Planck scale.Comment: 14 pages, Latex (\cite typos corrected
Global constants in (2+1)--dimensional gravity
The extended conformal algebra (so)(2,3) of global, quantum, constants of
motion in 2+1 dimensional gravity with topology R x T^2 and negative
cosmological constant is reviewed. It is shown that the 10 global constants
form a complete set by expressing them in terms of two commuting spinors and
the Dirac gamma matrices. The spinor components are the globally constant
holonomy parameters, and their respective spinor norms are their quantum
commutators.Comment: 14 pages, to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravity, Spacetime

Conductivity landscape of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface containing ribbons and edges
We present an extensive study on electrical spectroscopy of graphene ribbons
and edges of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) using atomic force
microscope (AFM). We have addressed in the present study two main issues, (1)
How does the electrical property of the graphite (graphene) sheet change when
the graphite layer is displaced by shear forces? and (2) How does the
electrical property of the graphite sheet change across a step edge? While
addressing these two issues we observed, (1) variation of conductance among the
graphite ribbons on the surface of HOPG. The top layer always exhibits more
conductance than the lower layers, (2) two different monolayer ribbons on the
same sheet of graphite shows different conductance, (3) certain ribbon/sheet
edges show sharp rise in current, (4) certain ribbons/sheets on the same edge
shows both presence and absense of the sharp rise in the current, (5) some
lower layers at the interface near a step edge shows a strange dip in the
current/conductance (depletion of charge). We discuss possible reasons for such
rich conducting landscape on the surface of graphite.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. For better quality figures please contact autho
Cu- and Cl-NMR Studies of Triplet Localization in the Quantum Spin System NHCuCl
Cu- and Cl-NMR experiments were performed to investigate
triplet localization in the dimer compound NHCuCl, which shows
magnetization plateaus at one-quarter and three-quarters of the saturation
magnetization. In Cu-NMR experiments, signal from only the singlet Cu
site was observed, because that from the triplet Cu site was invisible due to
the strong spin fluctuation of onsite 3-spins. We found that the temperature
dependence of the shift of Cu-NMR spectra at the singlet Cu site
deviated from that of macroscopic magnetization below T=6 K. This deviation is
interpreted as the triplet localization in this system. From the
Cl-NMR experiments at the 1/4-plateau phase, we found the two
different temperature dependences of Cl-shift, namely the temperature
dependence of one deviates below T=6 K from that of the macroscopic
magnetization as observed in the Cu-NMR experiments, whereas the
other corresponds well with that of the macroscopic magnetization in the entire
experimental temperature region. We interpreted these dependences as reflecting
the transferred hyperfine field at the Cl site located at a singlet site and at
a triplet site, respectively. This result also indicates that the triplets are
localized at low temperatures. Cu-NMR experiments performed at high
magnetic fields between the one-quarter and three-quarters magnetization
plateaus have revealed that the two differently oriented dimers in the unit
cell are equally occupied by triplets, the fact of which limits the theoretical
model on the periodic structure of the localized triplets.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PRB (in press
