On the generalized almost periodic homogenization of stochastic conservation laws with multiplicative noise
We consider the generalized almost periodic homogenization problem for two
types of stochastic conservation laws with oscillatory coefficients and a
multiplicative noise, namely, the nonlinear transport equation and the equation
with a stiff oscillating external force. We use the notion of homogenization by
noise-approximation, introduced here, which amounts to the homogenization of
the equations with an approximate noise as well as showing that the solutions
of the approximate equations with an artificial viscosity term converge, as the
noise-approximation parameter goes to zero, to the solutions of the original
equation with artificial viscosity, whose solutions are shown to converge to
the solutions of the original equation as the viscosity parameter goes to zero.
Besides, the homogenization limits of the approximate equations are themselves
limits of a two-parameter sequence, when one of these parameters, representing
viscosity, goes to zero, and whose counterpart limits, obtained when the other
parameter, representing the noise-approximation, goes to zero, converge to a
well determined limit which we call the homogenization limit by
noise-approximation (b.n.a.). In both cases the multiplicative noise is
prescribed so that the corresponding stochastic equation has special solutions
that play the role of steady-state solutions in the deterministic case and are
crucial elements in the homogenization analysis. As a byproduct, our
prescription of the multiplicative noise provides a way to justify the noise
perturbation of the corresponding deterministic equation
MicroRNA-143 activation regulates smooth muscle and endothelial cell crosstalk in pulmonary arterial hypertension
Rationale: The pathogenesis of PAH remains unclear. The four microRNAs representing the miR-143 and miR-145 stem loops are genomically clustered.
Objective: To elucidate the transcriptional regulation of the miR-143/145 cluster, and the role of miR-143 in PAH.
Methods and Results: We identified the promoter region that regulates miR-143/145 miRNA expression in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). We mapped PAH-related signalling pathways, including estrogens receptor (ER), liver X factor/retinoic X receptor (LXR/RXR), TGF-β (Smads), and hypoxia (HRE) that regulated levels of all pri-miR stem loop transcription and resulting miRNA expression. We observed that miR-143-3p is selectively upregulated compared to miR-143-5p during PASMC migration. Modulation of miR-143 in PASMCs significantly altered cell migration and apoptosis. In addition, we found high abundance of miR-143-3p in PASMCs-derived exosomes. Using assays with pulmonary arterial endothelial cells (PAECs) we demonstrated a paracrine pro-migratory and pro-angiogenic effect of miR-143-3p enriched exosomes from PASMC. Quantitative PCR and in situ hybridisation showed elevated expression of miR-143 in calf models of PAH as well as in samples from PAH patients. Moreover, in contrast to our previous findings that had not supported a therapeutic role in vivo, we now demonstrate a protective role for miR-143 in experimental PH in vivo in miR-143-/- and antimiR143-3p-treated mice exposed to chronic hypoxia in both preventative and reversal settings.
Conclusions: MiR-143-3p modulated both cellular and exosome-mediated responses in pulmonary vascular cells, while inhibition of miR-143-3p blocked experimental PH. Taken together these findings confirm an important role for the miR-143/145 cluster in PAH pathobiology
Making grooves with needles: Using e-textiles to encourage gender diversity in embedded audio systems design
Historically, women have been excluded from engineering and computer science disciplines, and interactive audio is no exception. Relatively few women are involved with the designing and building of embedded audio systems with traditional tools such as microprocessors, but when embedded audio systems are built using e-textiles, much larger proportions of women become engaged with technology. In this paper we review theories for this gender disparity and the barriers women face in working with audio technology, and then present a comparison of survey data between an e-textile audio workshop and an audio platform user group. Extrapolating from the case study and the surveyed literature, we propose that flexibility in learning, communal dissemination of knowledge, and gendering of tools are prominent reasons why women engage with technology via e-textiles
New Insulin Delivery Recommendations
Many primary care professionals manage injection or infusion therapies in patients with diabetes. Few published guidelines have been available to help such professionals and their patients manage these therapies. Herein, we present new, practical, and comprehensive recommendations for diabetes injections and infusions. These recommendations were informed by a large international survey of current practice and were written and vetted by 183 diabetes experts from 54 countries at the Forum for Injection Technique and Therapy: Expert Recommendations (FITTER) workshop held in Rome, Italy, in 2015. Recommendations are organized around the themes of anatomy, physiology, pathology, psychology, and technology. Key among the recommendations are that the shortest needles (currently the 4-mm pen and 6-mm syringe needles) are safe, effective, and less painful and should be the first-line choice in all patient categories; intramuscular injections should be avoided, especially with long-acting insulins, because severe hypoglycemia may result; lipohypertrophy is a frequent complication of therapy that distorts insulin absorption, and, therefore, injections and infusions should not be given into these lesions and correct site rotation will help prevent them; effective long-term therapy with insulin is critically dependent on addressing psychological hurdles upstream, even before insulin has been started; inappropriate disposal of used sharps poses a risk of infection with blood-borne pathogens; and mitigation is possible with proper training, effective disposal strategies, and the use of safety devices. Adherence to these new recommendations should lead to more effective therapies, improved outcomes, and lower costs for patients with diabetes.
