VUV SOURCE FROM PULSED-LASER GENERATED PLASMA

    No full text
We describe a pulsed vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) source consisting of a plasma created by focusing a NdYAG laser beam into rare gases under moderate pressure, and we report on spectral and time properties of that source. Main features are : continuum emission in a large spectral range, with only few lines superimposed, good time characteristics of the pulses, stability, cleanliness, and relatively high repetition rate (20 Hz)

Dispositif à deux faisceaux pour études d'absorption de gaz coniiensés dans la région 2 000 Å-500 Å

A double beam monochromator for optical absorption studies of condensed gases down to 500 Å is described. The source is a triggered vacuum spark and the sample is deposited on to a cooled fluorescent substrate. The electronic detection device is described in detail. The performance of the instrument is illustrated by two examples.

Birefringence of sapphire, magnesium fluoride, and quartz in the vacuum ultraviolet, and retardation plates

    No full text
Measurements of the birefringence of sapphire, magnesium fluoride, and synthetic quartz from 3000 Ã… to 1500 Ã… are reported and are followed by a discussion of the methods of achromatizing quarter-wave plates and of linearizing the path retardation of a multiwave plate against wavelength (equichromatic wave plates)

Anomalous dispersion of birefringence of sapphire and magnesium fluoride in the vacuum ultraviolet

Previous measurements of the birefringence of sapphire and magnesium fluoride have been extended to their respective limits of transparency, revealing anomalous dispersion effects at short wavelengths, which are qualitatively discussed. Possible practical applications to Lyot filters and quarter-wave plates for Lyman-alpha are indicated

Dispersion of quartz in the vacuum ultraviolet from interference in a thin parallel plate

Measurements of the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of synthetic quartz in the vacuum uv down to 1440 Ã… are reported as deduced from the determination of the orders of interference fringes in a thin parallel plate

TWO-PHOTON EXCITATION AND DECAY IN XENON

    No full text
The kinetics associated with the decay of the first excited states of xenon has been studied in two complementary experiments : - two-photon excitation of the 6p[K]j atomic levels,- one photon excitation by VUV light from laser generated plasma [1]

Energy dissipated in an absorbing plane parallel plate

    No full text
For an absorbing plane parallel plate, a simple reciprocal transformation exists between the expressions for the reflectance R and transmittance T, enabling easy passage from one to the other. Then it is shown that the expression a = 1-R-T is always positive and, further, may be identified with the energy computed for the dissipation by the Joule effect in the plate, provided that the resultant electric field is calculated at each point inside the plate
