Nitrates in surface waters, inputs and seasonality: Progress report for the period April - December 1987
The objective of this short project progress report is to investigate, in a catchment on which earlier nitrate data are available for comparison, seasonality and budgets, in relation to land use, of nitrate inputs, concentrations and loads. Experiments using an artificial stream to investigate the seasonal growth of chalk-stream algae
Research into the production ecology of chalk streams using a large artificial recirculating stream is described. Physical chemical processes including calcium and inorganic phosphate levels, and exchange of gaseous carbon dioxide in both a simple closed system and a circulating system with gravel substrate have been monitored in both light and dark conditions. Further experiments were concerned with the seasonal changes in algal growth over the gravel substrate with constant water velocities and replenishment. The algal population, composed mainly of the diatoms Achnanthes minutissima, Meridion circulare, Nitzschia fonticola and Synedra ulna reached a peak in mid May and declined rapidly during June. Concentrations of phosphate phosphorus fell as the diatoms grew but was not thought to limit growth. Silicate concentrations followed the diatom cycle closely but never fell below 0.8 mg/l Si. It is possible that one of the nutrients may have been limiting the rate of growth due to steep diffusion gradients through the algal mat. In the last summer and autumn a hard calcareous crust composed of the green alga Gongrosira incrustans and the blue green alga Homeothrix varians , developed. The channel stream is compared with the natural conditions found in chalk streams
Impact of watercress cultivation on river water quality: progress report for the period, January - December 1987
The objective of this short project progress report is to investigate the possible water quality implications of modern watercress growing practices. Chalk receiving watercourses are usually of high supply, amenity, game fishing and fish farming value. Any headwater pollution load, therefore, needs characterising and quantifying. Two sites of watercress farming were studied in 1986-87 and nutrient levels examined. Different approaches of watercress farmers in Dorset and Hampshire are summarised
Measuring digital crime investigation capacity to guide international crime prevention strategies
This work proposes a method for the measurement of a country's digital
investigation capacity and saturation for the assessment of future capacity
expansion. The focus is on external, or international, partners being a factor
that could negatively affect the return on investment when attempting to expand
investigation capacity nationally. This work concludes with the argument that
when dealing with digital crime, target international partners should be a
consideration in expansion, and could potentially be a bottleneck of

Changes in management practices and agricultural productivity over the past twenty years have lead to nitrate pollution and eutrophication of lakes and rivers. Information on nitrate concentrations and discharge has been collected on the River Frome at East Stoke since 1965, using the same analytical nitrate method so that the results are comparable. These records of weekly spot values of nitrate concentration and daily mean discharges have been analysed for trends and seasonal patterns in both concentration and nitrate loadings. In this extension of our nitrate contract, a new automated method of intensive sampling has been used to monitor short-term variability and to assess how well similar routine (weekly) sampling schemes can represent the true nitrate record

UVMULTIFIT: A versatile tool for fitting astronomical radio interferometric data
The analysis of astronomical interferometric data is often performed on the
images obtained after deconvolution of the interferometer's point spread
function (PSF). This strategy can be understood (especially for cases of sparse
arrays) as fitting models to models, since the deconvolved images are already
non-unique model representations of the actual data (i.e., the visibilities).
Indeed, the interferometric images may be affected by visibility gridding,
weighting schemes (e.g., natural vs. uniform), and the particulars of the
(non-linear) deconvolution algorithms. Fitting models to the direct
interferometric observables (i.e., the visibilities) is preferable in the cases
of simple (analytical) sky intensity distributions. In this paper, we present
UVMULTIFIT, a versatile library for fitting visibility data, implemented in a
Python-based framework. Our software is currently based on the CASA package,
but can be easily adapted to other analysis packages, provided they have a
Python API. We have tested the software with synthetic data, as well as with
real observations. In some cases (e.g., sources with sizes smaller than the
diffraction limit of the interferometer), the results from the fit to the
visibilities (e.g., spectra of close by sources) are far superior to the output
obtained from the mere analysis of the deconvolved images. UVMULTIFIT is a
powerful improvement of existing tasks to extract the maximum amount of
information from visibility data, especially in cases close to the

Magnetocaloric effect in Gd/W thin film heterostructures
In an effort to understand the impact of nanostructuring on the
magnetocaloric effect, we have grown and studied gadolinium in MgO/W(50
)/[Gd(400 )/W(50 )]
heterostructures. The entropy change associated with the second order magnetic
phase transition was determined from the isothermal magnetization for numerous
temperatures and the appropriate Maxwell relation. The entropy change peaks at
a temperature of 284 K with a value of approximately 3.4 J/kg-K for a 0-30 kOe
field change; the full width at half max of the entropy change peak is about 70
K, which is significantly wider than that of bulk Gd under similar conditions.
The relative cooling power of this nanoscale system is about 240 J/kg, somewhat
lower than that of bulk Gd (410 J/kg). An iterative Kovel-Fisher method was
used to determine the critical exponents governing the phase transition to be
, and . Along with a suppressed Curie temperature
relative to the bulk, the fact that the convergent value of is that
predicted by the 2-D Ising model may suggest that finite size effects play an
important role in this system. Together, these observations suggest that
nanostructuring may be a promising route to tailoring the magnetocaloric
response of materials
Frontostriatal Maturation Predicts Cognitive Control Failure to Appetitive Cues in Adolescents
Adolescent risk-taking is a public health issue that increases the odds of poor lifetime outcomes. One factor thought to influence adolescents' propensity for risk-taking is an enhanced sensitivity to appetitive cues, relative to an immature capacity to exert sufficient cognitive control. We tested this hypothesis by characterizing interactions among ventral striatal, dorsal striatal, and prefrontal cortical regions with varying appetitive load using fMRI scanning. Child, teen, and adult participants performed a go/no-go task with appetitive (happy faces) and neutral cues (calm faces). Impulse control to neutral cues showed linear improvement with age, whereas teens showed a nonlinear reduction in impulse control to appetitive cues. This performance decrement in teens was paralleled by enhanced activity in the ventral striatum. Prefrontal cortical recruitment correlated with overall accuracy and showed a linear response with age for no-go versus go trials. Connectivity analyses identified a ventral frontostriatal circuit including the inferior frontal gyrus and dorsal striatum during no-go versus go trials. Examining recruitment developmentally showed that teens had greater between-subject ventral-dorsal striatal coactivation relative to children and adults for happy no-go versus go trials. These findings implicate exaggerated ventral striatal representation of appetitive cues in adolescents relative to an intermediary cognitive control response. Connectivity and coactivity data suggest these systems communicate at the level of the dorsal striatum differentially across development. Biased responding in this system is one possible mechanism underlying heightened risk-taking during adolescence
