    A dyadic planning intervention to quit smoking in single-smoking couples:design of a randomized controlled trial

    BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of death. Smoking cessation interventions that use implementation intentions show promising results. Implementation intentions are if-then plans that specify a certain behaviour within a situational context. This study will examine whether involving a non-smoking partner could improve planning interventions, and whether and which partner interactions underlie this effectiveness. METHODS: This single-blind randomized controlled trial has a longitudinal design with a baseline questionnaire, end-of-day measurements for three weeks starting on the quit date, and a follow-up questionnaire after three months. PARTICIPANTS: single-smoking couples who live together and are in a relationship for more than one year. SETTING: couples are randomized to either a dyadic or individual planning condition. After the intervention the smoker attempts to quit smoking and the diary measurements start. MEASUREMENTS: The primary outcome variable is smoking abstinence. Secondary outcome measures are smoking behaviour and relationship satisfaction. Partner interactions are examined as a possible mediator. DISCUSSION: This RCT is the first to examine the effectiveness of dyadic planning to quit smoking in single-smoking couples. Partner interactions are thought to play an important role during the quit attempt, and therefore in the effectiveness of the intervention. This RCT will provide more insight into which daily partner interactions are beneficial for smoking abstinence and the couples' relationship satisfaction, and whether the type of intervention is related to different types or levels of partner interactions and smoking behaviour. When proven effective, this planning intervention in combination with coaching for the non-smoking partner will be a valuable and low-cost addition to existing smoking interventions.     Genetic analysis of orotic acid predicted with Fourier transform infrared milk spectra

    Fourier transform infrared spectral analysis is a cheap and fast method to predict milk composition. A not very well studied milk component is orotic acid. Orotic acid is an intermediate in the biosynthesis pathway of pyrimidine nucleotides and is an indicator for the metabolic cattle disorder deficiency of uridine monophosphate synthase. The function of orotic acid in milk and its effect on calf health, health of humans consuming milk or milk products, manufacturing properties of milk, and its potential as an indicator trait are largely unknown. The aims of this study were to determine if milk orotic acid can be predicted from infrared milk spectra and to perform a large-scale phenotypic and genetic analysis of infrared-predicted milk orotic acid. An infrared prediction model for orotic acid was built using a training population of 292 Danish Holstein and 299 Danish Jersey cows, and a validation population of 381 Danish Holstein cows. Milk orotic acid concentration was determined with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. For genetic analysis of infrared orotic acid, 3 study populations were used: 3,210 Danish Holstein cows, 3,360 Danish Jersey cows, and 1,349 Dutch Holstein Friesian cows. Using partial least square regression, a prediction model for orotic acid was built with 18 latent variables. The error of the prediction for the infrared model varied from 1.0 to 3.2 mg/L, and the accuracy varied from 0.68 to 0.86. Heritability of infrared orotic acid predicted with the standardized prediction model was 0.18 for Danish Holstein, 0.09 for Danish Jersey, and 0.37 for Dutch Holstein Friesian. We conclude that milk orotic acid can be predicted with moderate to good accuracy based on infrared milk spectra and that infrared-predicted orotic acid is heritable. The availability of a cheap and fast method to predict milk orotic acid opens up possibilities to study the largely unknown functions of milk orotic acid.</p

    Daily Support and Negative Control During a Quit Attempt in Single-Smoking Couples

    OBJECTIVE: Research has shown a beneficial influence of partner support on smoking cessation. Previous studies mainly focused on support and neglected negative behaviors. Less is known about differences in support perceptions between partners. This study aimed to examine how supportive as well as negative control behaviors relate to smoking and relationship satisfaction in single-smoking couples during a quit attempt. METHOD: Smokers and their nonsmoking partners (n = 170 cohabiting couples) participated in an intensive longitudinal study over 21 days with end-of-day diaries. A dyadic score model was used, emphasizing couple levels and differences for the explanatory variables (i.e., support and negative control) and the outcome variables (smoking [for smokers only]; relationship satisfaction). RESULTS: Smokers whose partner showed more supportive and less negative control behavior had a lower probability of smoking, and both partners had higher relationship satisfaction. On days with more supportive and less negative control behavior than usual, smokers had a lower probability of smoking and both partners had higher relationship satisfaction. For smokers who reported more support than their partner reported providing, the couples' relationship satisfaction was higher and the smokers' relationship satisfaction was higher than their partners'. Differences between received and provided support/control at the between-couple and daily level were unrelated to smoking. CONCLUSIONS: Support seems important during a quit attempt as it was related to a lower probability of smoking and higher relationship satisfaction in couples, while negative control behaviors should be avoided as they were associated with higher probability of smoking and lower relationship satisfaction.     A migração e suas consequências para a expansão urbana do Distrito Federal

Curso de Licenciatura em Geografia a Distância.O imenso processo de ocupação urbana do Distrito Federal foi iniciado há pouco mais de quarenta anos. A cidade é relativamente nova, mas enfrenta problemas com a mesma dimensão de qualquer outra metrópole brasileira. Compreender este e outros fatos ocorridos no contexto nacional e relacionar ao processo de urbanização da Capital Federal, é o principal objetivo dessa pesquisa. Brasília foi imaginada para abrigar uma população de aproximadamente quinhentas mil pessoas, hoje podemos dizer que já ultrapassa os dois milhões de habitantes. No início, para garantir que tudo isso ocorresse em Brasília, surgiram às cidades-satélites, distantes do grande centro administrativo e com a finalidade de abrigar os trabalhadores pioneiros no processo de construção da nova capital federal. Nesse processo, um de seus principais objetivos não se realizou que era o de reduzir as desigualdades sócio espaciais. A transferência da população para locais distantes do Plano-Piloto, centro defensor das oportunidades de trabalho, configurou uma contínua exclusão sócio espacial. Acreditava-se que Brasília, no ano 2000, teria menos de meio milhão de habitantes. Não existiriam cidades-satélites, nem “entornos”, e proporcionaria a integração social dos seus moradores nas famosas superquadras, onde diretores e contínuos, funcionários e motoristas, ministros e ascensoristas conviveriam harmonicamente. Entre a utopia que norteou a sua construção e os dias de hoje, em que Brasília já mostra sinais evidentes de caos urbano, a distância se explica pelas próprias características do processo social brasileiro. ___________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe immense process of urban occupation of the Federal District was started a little over forty years. The city is relatively new, but faces problems with the same size as any other Brazilian metropolis. Understand this and other occurring in the national context andreportto the process of urbanization of the Federal Capital, is the main objective of this research. Brasília was designed to house a population of approximately half a million people. Earlier, ensuring that everything that happened in Brasilia, satellite cities emerged, distant from large administrative center and in order to a accommodate workers pioneered in the process of building the new federal capital. In this process, one of his main goals was not realized, which was to reduce socialine qualities space. The change in the population, set up an ongoing socio-spatial exclusion. Believed to Brasília, in 2000, there would be lessthan half a million inhabitants. There would be nosatellite citiesor"environments", and would be socially inclusive, the famous superblocks,where directors, employees and drivers,ministersand elevator would live harmoniously.     Drivers and uncertainties of future global marine primary production in marine ecosystem models

    Past model studies have projected a global decrease in marine net primary production (NPP) over the 21st century, but these studies focused on the multi-model mean rather than on the large inter-model differences. Here, we analyze model-simulated changes in NPP for the 21st century under IPCC's high-emission scenario RCP8.5. We use a suite of nine coupled carbon–climate Earth system models with embedded marine ecosystem models and focus on the spread between the different models and the underlying reasons. Globally, NPP decreases in five out of the nine models over the course of the 21st century, while three show no significant trend and one even simulates an increase. The largest model spread occurs in the low latitudes (between 30° S and 30° N), with individual models simulating relative changes between −25 and +40 %. Of the seven models diagnosing a net decrease in NPP in the low latitudes, only three simulate this to be a consequence of the classical interpretation, i.e., a stronger nutrient limitation due to increased stratification leading to reduced phytoplankton growth. In the other four, warming-induced increases in phytoplankton growth outbalance the stronger nutrient limitation. However, temperature-driven increases in grazing and other loss processes cause a net decrease in phytoplankton biomass and reduce NPP despite higher growth rates. One model projects a strong increase in NPP in the low latitudes, caused by an intensification of the microbial loop, while NPP in the remaining model changes by less than 0.5 %. While models consistently project increases NPP in the Southern Ocean, the regional inter-model range is also very substantial. In most models, this increase in NPP is driven by temperature, but it is also modulated by changes in light, macronutrients and iron as well as grazing. Overall, current projections of future changes in global marine NPP are subject to large uncertainties and necessitate a dedicated and sustained effort to improve the models and the concepts and data that guide their developmen

    Corrigendum: Short-lived positron emitters in beam-on PET imaging during proton therapy (2015 Phys. Med. Biol. 60 8923)

    Because of strong indications of multiple counting by the multi-channel scaler (MCS) during most of the experiments described in Dendooven et al (2015 Phys. Med. Biol. 60 8923–47), the production of short-lived positron emitters in the stopping of 55 MeV protons in water, carbon, phosphorus and calcium was remeasured. The new results are reported here. With proper single counting of the MCS, the new production rates are 1.1 to 2.9 times smaller than reported in Dendooven et al (2015 Phys. Med. Biol. 60 8923–47). The omission of the conversion from MCS time bin to time unit in the previous data analysis was corrected, leading to an increase of the production rate by a factor of 2.5 or 10 for some nuclides. The most copiously produced short-lived nuclides and their production rates relative to the relevant long-lived nuclides are: 12N (T 1/2  =  11 ms) on carbon (5.3% of 11C), 29P (T 1/2  =  4.1 s) on phosphorus (23% of 30P) and 38mK (T 1/2  =  0.92 s) on calcium (173% of 38gK). The number of decays integrated from the start of an irradiation as a function of time during the irradiation of PMMA and 4 tissue materials has been determined. For (carbon-rich) adipose tissue, 12N dominates up to 70 s. On bone tissue, 38mK dominates the beam-on PET counts from 0.2–0.7 s until about 80–110 s. Considering nuclides created on phosphorus and calcium, the short-lived ones provide 8 times more decays than the long-lived ones during a 70 s irradiation. Bone tissue will thus be much better visible in beam-on PET compared to PET imaging after an irradiation. From the estimated number of 12N PET counts, we conclude that, for any tissue, except carbon-poor ones, 12N PET imaging potentially provides equal quality proton range information as prompt gamma imaging with an optimized knife-edge slit camera

    Methods for interpreting lists of affected genes obstained in a DNA microarray experiment

    Background - The aim of this paper was to describe and compare the methods used and the results obtained by the participants in a joint EADGENE (European Animal Disease Genomic Network of Excellence) and SABRE (Cutting Edge Genomics for Sustainable Animal Breeding) workshop focusing on post analysis of microarray data. The participating groups were provided with identical lists of microarray probes, including test statistics for three different contrasts, and the normalised log-ratios for each array, to be used as the starting point for interpreting the affected probes. The data originated from a microarray experiment conducted to study the host reactions in broilers occurring shortly after a secondary challenge with either a homologous or heterologous species of Eimeria. Results - Several conceptually different analytical approaches, using both commercial and public available software, were applied by the participating groups. The following tools were used: Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, MAPPFinder, LIMMA, GOstats, GOEAST, GOTM, Globaltest, TopGO, ArrayUnlock, Pathway Studio, GIST and AnnotationDbi. The main focus of the approaches was to utilise the relation between probes/genes and their gene ontology and pathways to interpret the affected probes/genes. The lack of a well-annotated chicken genome did though limit the possibilities to fully explore the tools. The main results from these analyses showed that the biological interpretation is highly dependent on the statistical method used but that some common biological conclusions could be reached. Conclusion - It is highly recommended to test different analytical methods on the same data set and compare the results to obtain a reliable biological interpretation of the affected genes in a DNA microarray experimen
