    Numerical simulations of rotating sunspots

    Get PDF
A numerical model of idealized, axisymmetric, rotating sunspots is presented. The model contains a compressible plasma described by the nonlinear MHD equations, with density and temperature gradients simulating the upper layer of the sun’s convection zone. The solution forms a central flux tube in the cylindrical numerical domain, with convection cells pushing the magnetic field to the axis. When the numerical domain is rotated with a constant angular velocity, the umbra rotates as a rigid body while the surrounding convection cells show a swirling, vortical flow. As a result, the azimuthal velocity and magnetic field have their maximum values close to the flux tube, inside the innermost convection cell

Development Of An Integrated Operating Framework For Strategy Execution In Gauteng Municipalities In South Africa

The establishment of a new democracy has created high expectations amongst all the different communities of South Africa. The demand for basic essential services by the previously disadvantaged communities has increased drastically, whilst at the same time, communities from developed areas are expecting and demanding an acceptable level of maintenance and services in their respective areas. Municipalities are in serious distress with regular service delivery protests, huge service delivery and infrastructure backlog challenges (e.g., electricity, roads, housing, water, and sanitation), poor financial management and the inability to execute approved strategies, plans, and programs. This article focused on the municipalities in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and the main objective was to answer the survey question: “What prevents Gauteng municipalities to successfully execute its strategies and what can be done to address the situation?” The research objectives were firstly, to review the literature and determine the key enablers required for successful strategy execution; secondly, to analyze the findings of the empirical research and to make recommendations towards the improvement of strategy execution within Gauteng municipalities. The third and final objective was to develop an integrated operating framework for strategy execution in Gauteng municipalities. The article concluded by making recommendations towards the improvement of strategy execution within municipalities and developing an integrated operating framework for strategy execution. The results of the literature review as well as the empirical research were taken into account during the development of the integrated operating framework

Planning for the upgrading of informal settlements

    Get PDF
Planning for the upgrading of informal settlements is still a relatively unknown field for planners in South Africa and it is certain to receive more attention in future. The role of the upgrading of informal settlements in providing low income housing will be discussed, as well as certain factors that play an important role in planning projects of this kind. A "strategy", involving certain alternative solutions available to the planner in the field, will then be put forward. Findings from a study done in Joe Slovo Square, Bloemfontein, will be used to illustrate the article

TOWARDS A SOCIAL NICHE ASSESSMENT INSTRUMENT

From a social work perspective, individual outcomes are the results of a transactional processbetween personal and environmental influences. It is a long-cherished conviction in SocialWork that individual problems and successes must be framed within the larger context offamily, community and society (Saleebey, 2002c:231). However, it is also a conviction that isoften not reflected in social work practice (Rose, 2000:405; Saleebey, 2002c:230; Weick,2000:398). Clinical practice tends to focus on personal factors, and community practice onenvironmental factors, while the transactional dimension is often not accounted for. Thetendency is also to focus on deficits and problems in these systems and not on strengths orpotential strengths

Strategy And Planning As An Enabler For Strategy Execution In South African Municipalities

Literature confirmed that whilst progress has been made in recent years, there is still a pressing need amongst communities in South Africa for improved service delivery. There is also increasing frustration and anger at the inability of municipalities to do what is expected of them. Municipalities, in general, have a poor record in respect of execution of strategy.   The research problem - “what prevents Gauteng municipalities in South Africa to successfully execute its strategies and what can be done to address the situation?”-  will be answered and dealt with when the findings and conclusions relevant to each research objective are discussed.   Research and literature to date focused primarily on planning and strategy formulation but neglected the very important execution process. Whilst strategy execution is a dismal failure in most organizations, to date, very little research has focused on strategy execution.   Managers and their employees must apply new ways of thinking and they point out that today’s high performing organizations are able to bridge the strategy-execution gap due to the fact that their strategies translate to specific operational goals, their employees understand the context and purpose of their work, and they can readily measure how well they are performing

Farmers’ perceptual, emotional and behavioural responses to environmental policy changes

Environmental policies purposefully encourage environmental protection by redirecting human decision-making and activities. Achieving the right human responses to environmental policy is therefore critically important. This paper discusses the regulatory framework and pastoral farmers’ adaptation to a new regulation, consisting of rules, designed to protect the pristine waters of Lake Taupo from land based non-point source nitrogen emissions. The lake is an internationally recognised treasure and New Zealand icon, however, its water quality has been deteriorating over decades because of rising nitrogen levels, 37% of which comes from pastoral farming activities in the catchment. The paper discusses agricultural extension in the context of emotional, perceptual and behavioural change.Key words: farmer adaptation, policy impact, water quality, farming practices, extensio
