    Get PDF
Low-power laser irradiation (LPLI) effects on cell cycle progression in Jurkat E6.1 T-lymphocyte leukemia (JETL) cells were examined in vitro at 635nm (visible) and 780nm (near infrared) wavelengths. The cells were exposed to an energy density of 9.174 J/cm2, and then examined 24, 48 and 72 hours post-irradiation. Cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry at 24 hours post-irradiation revealed that the three phases (G0/G1, S and G2/M) of cultured JETL cells showed different percentages in LPLI (635nm and 780nm) and unirradiated cultures, but S phase cells were observed with significant increased percentages (55.6 and 55.7%, respectively) compared to controls (37.3%). At 48 hours, again cells at S phase were observed with much higher percentages than control cells (48.2 and 51.5% vs. 29.9%, respectively), and the difference was significant (P ? 0.05). At 72 hours, the S phase cells were also observed with much higher percentages than control cells (33.1 and 32.6% vs. 21.3%, respectively), and the difference was also significant (P ? 0.05). Keywords: Cell cycle, Jurkat E6.1 T-lymphocyte leukemia cell line, Low-power laser irradiation

The co-occurrence of metabolic syndrome with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) will potentiate the morbidity and mortality that may be associated with each case. Fasting triglycerides-glucose index (TyG index) has been recommended as a useful marker to predict metabolic syndrome. Our study aimed to introduce gender-specific cut-off values of triglycerides- glucose index   for diagnosing metabolic syndrome associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The data were collected from Baghdad hospitals between May - December 2019. The number of eligible participants was 424. National cholesterol education program, Adult Treatment Panel III criteria were used to define metabolic syndrome. Measurement of fasting blood glucose, lipid profile, HbA1c level, blood pressure, and anthropometric were done and the triglyceride-glucose index was calculated. Ethical approval and informed consent were obtained .SPSS was used to analyze the data. Diabetic patients with metabolic syndrome showed an increased level of TyG Index. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome increased with increased TyG index quartiles. The TyG-Index showed significant correlations with all components of metabolic syndrome. The optimal cut-off value revealed 9.14, 9.28 for males and females respectively. In conclusion, TyG index is a good predictor of the presence of MetS in T2DM the TyG index, just measured in one laboratory test, is simple, informative and more suitable for the detection of metabolic syndrome in Iraqi type 2 diabetes mellitus

Due to the higher increase in the oil industry activities in Iraq, since there are a little information of the environmental status of the areas around the refinery locations, and the concerns of a possible environmental pollution that will cause health and life threats to living organisms, this study was carried out.To understand the status of heavy metals pollution in areas inside and surrounding Al-Daura refinery activities, (17) testing locations were chosen, ten locationsoutsidethe refinery and sevenlocationsinside it.One additional location was chosen in a rural (control) area, in the University of Baghdad, to compare between the heavy metals concentration in the study area and a sample from the rural area not affected by the pollution. The soil samples have been taken from (5 and 60 cm) depth from the top surface of the soil. Three samples were taken from each depth for each location to take an average of results. All the samples of soil were taken during the period from Dec/2010 to Feb/2011.The experimental work has been includes the heavy metals concentrations, such as Zinc, Nickel, Lead and Cadmium, have been measured at each selected depth for each testing locations. The results indicate that the mean concentration of Zn and Ni is (62.4 µg/g) and (100.5 µg/g) respectively and this valuesexceeded the mean allowable value by (Alloway, 1995 [2]; Kabata-Pendias and Pendias, 1992 [6]).The most concentrations of Zn, Ni and Pb, with some exceptions, accumulate at the top soil and decrease with the depth except Cd
