Here's the first italian translation of two letters by Friedrich Hölderlin, written between November 1798 and January 1799 and adressed respectively to Christian Ludwig Neuffer (the first one) and to Hölderlin's youngest brother Karl (the second one). Aim of these two letters is to clarify and to take a deeper look into the notion of lebendiges, the “living element”, which is at the heart of Hölderlins' poetics. Translated by Mariagrazia Portera

Universalism and the (un)translatable

A unified set of questions arises in translation theory as it does in philosophy: how can one particularity be related to another? Can any general truth emerge from this relationship? And if so, in what particular language might this general truth be thought about and discussed? This article explores how various French thinkers have addressed these questions, from Alain Badiou’s recent account of philosophical French in terms of universalism, to Antoine Berman’s and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe’s readings of an alternative approach to universalism provided by German thought. Where a key passage in Badiou’s text suggests that he has Friedrich Hölderlin in mind, this poet-translator provides an explicit model for the other two thinkers

O presente ensaio busca indicar a diversidade de itinerários de pesquisa e a multiplicidade de linguagens permitidas pela ampla ideia de formação humana. Propõe ao leitor o exercício de investigá-la mediante fragmentos de um romance epistolar, um tratado de educação e uma carta que procura defender os princípios de tal tratado, nomeadamente: Júlia ou a nova Heloísa, Emílio ou Da Educação e Carta a Christophe de Beaumont, da obra de Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Para tanto, elege o conceito de educação negativa que aparece nesses escritos na intenção de acompanhar o seu deslizar de uma determinada filosofia de educação em direção a uma estética formativa que se faz compreender pelo cruzamento entre filosofia, literatura e paisagismo
