Raman selection rules in uniaxial media: The nonpolar modes of Mn Ga2 Se4
Under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 3.0 (CC-BY).It is known that optically anisotropic media can change the polarization of light propagating inside them. As regards Raman spectroscopy, this affects the light intensity measured in different geometrical configurations and results in an apparent unfulfillment of selection rules. We present an experimental and theoretical study of such effects in the defect chalcopyrite semiconductor MnGa2Se4. Optical anisotropy is taken into account by including in the calculation of Raman intensities the phase difference appearing between ordinary and extraordinary waves as they propagate, in uniaxial media, with different velocities. Birefringence can be obtained from Raman measurements provided that the distance run by the light is known. We acknowledge financial support from research project MAT2001-3713-C04.Peer Reviewe
The authors presented an experimental work in rabbits. They
rewiewed the revascularization an morfology ("Sinovialization"
and "Ligamentation") of tendon autograft used to replace the
anterior cruciate ligament (18 rabbits studied) by histological techniques

The critical factor: The role of quality in the performance of supported accommodation services for complex mental illness in England
Rehabilitation services have a key role in ensuring integrated and comprehensive mental health (MH) care in the community for people suffering from long-term and severe mental disorders. MH-supported accommodation services aim to promote service users’ autonomy and independence. Given the complexity associated with MH-supported accommodation services in England, a comparative evaluation of critical performance indicators, including service provision and quality of care, seems to be necessary in designing evidence-informed policies. This study aims to explore the influence of service quality indicators on the performance of MH-supported accommodation services in England. The analysed sample includes supported accommodation services from 14 nationally representative local authorities in England from the QuEST study grouped by three main types of care: residential care homes (divided into two subgroups: move-on and non-move-on oriented), supported housing and floating outreach. EDeS-MH (efficient decision support-mental health) was used to assess the performance indicators for the selected services by combining a Monte Carlo simulation engine, data envelopment analysis and a fuzzy inference engine for integrating expert knowledge. Depending on the type of care, six/seven quality domains were sequentially included after a baseline scenario (only technical) was analysed. Relative technical efficiency scores for the baseline scenarios revealed high performance in all the selected supported accommodation services, but the statistical variability was high. Quality domains significantly improved performance in every type of care. The inclusion of quality indicators has a positive impact on the global performance of each type of care. Remaining at the corresponding services more than expected for two years has a negative impact on performance. These findings can be considered from a planning perspective to facilitate the design of pathways of care with more realistic expectations about gaining autonomy in two years
In this paper, the authors have studied the biological respons e of tendinous
allografts, implanted inside the kne e articulation, in a experimental study.
The revascularization of the grafts, and the intrinsic tendinous change s in both
series, frozen and no frozen allografts, is studied with optical and electron microscopy.
In the no frozen allografts, is more important the intensive inflamatory inmunitary
response, with few signs of orientation of the definitive fibrous tissue. In the
serie of frozen allografts, the inflamatory response is limited with predominanc e of
the angiogénesis process

Alternative treatments for oral bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws: a pilot study comparing fibrin rich in growth factors and teriparatide
Objectives: The aim of this study is to describe and compare the evolution of recurrent bisphosphonate-related
osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) in patients treated with plasma rich in growth factors or teriparatide.
Material and Methods: Two different types of treatments were applied in patients diagnosed of recurrent BRONJ
in a referral hospital for 1.100.000 inhabitants. In the group A, plasma rich in growth factors was applied dur
-
ing the surgery. In the group B, the treatment consisted in the subcutaneous administration of teriparatide. All
the cases of BRONJ should meet the following conditions: recurrent BRONJ, impossibility of surgery in stage 3
Ruggiero classification and absence of diagnosed neoplastic disease. Clinical and radiographic evolution of the
patients from both groups was observed.
Results: Nine patients were included, 5 in group A and 4 in group B. All the patients were women on oral bis-
phosphonate therapy for primary osteoporosis (5 patients) or osteoporosis-related to the use of corticosteroids
(4 patients). Alendronate was the most common oral bisphosphonate associated with BRONJ in our study (four
patients in group A and two in group B). The mean age was 72,8 years in the group A and 73,5 years in the group
B. All the patients from group A showed a complete resolution of their BRONJ. Only one patient in the group B
showed the same evolution.
Conclusions: In our series, the plasma rich in growth factors showed better results than the teriparatide in the
treatment of recurrent BRONJ
Technological and infrastructure collaborative seismic research in Western Mexico
In February and March 2014, Spanish, Mexican and British scientists
and technicians explored the western margin of Mexico, a region with a high occurrence
of large earthquakes (> Mw = 7.5) and tsunami generation, on board the
British Royal Research Ship James Cook. This successful joint cruise, named TSUJAL,
was made possible thanks to a cooperative agreement between NERC and CSIC as
part of the Ocean Facilities Exchange Group (OFEG), a major forum of European
oceanographic institutions for the exchange of ship time, equipment and personnel.
A dense geophysical data set was acquired using for the first time 6 km length
seismic streamer facilities from Spain’s Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas
(CSIC), usually operating in the Spanish RV Sarmiento de Gamboa, onboard
the British RRS James Cook by solving all mechanical, electrical and electronic
problems. The RRS James Cook in turn provides the seismic source and the acoustic,
hullmounted echosounder operated by the British Natural Environment Research
Council (NERC). Multiscale seismic and echosounder images unravel the subduction
geometry, nature of the crust, and evidence faults and mass wasting processes. The
data are crucial to estimating fault seismic parameters, and these parameters are
critical to carrying out seismic hazard in Mexico, especially when considering largemagnitude
earthquakes (Mw 8.0), and to constrain tsunami models.Peer Reviewe
