    R. K. Narayan is an award winning author of more than a dozen novels and short stories, instead of these, he is popularly known for his Malgudi Days. He was born on 10th Oct. 1906 in Madras British India (now Chennai Tamil Nadu, India). His full name was Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanswami. The life of R.K Narayan is reflected in all his works. The life of middle-class Indian society is the focus of his most of the novels, and each main character goes through a crisis and transformation of some sort, maybe it is an identity or spiritual one. It is important to note that R. K. Narayan wrote solely on his own experiences as a middle-class Brahmin of the fairly high caste-a privileged position that was not the norm of India

    Objectives : To know the pulmonary function tests in sitting, supine and standing postures in North Indian population Is there any change in PFTs due to change in posture Settings: Department of Physiology, G.S.V.M. Medical College, Kanpur and Escorts Heart Centre, Kanpur Participants : 50 male and 30 female healthy, non-smoker volunteers comprising of 50 students of first year MBBS and 30 volunteers at Escorts Heart Centre, Kanpur Measurements : PFTs, FEV1, FVC, FER, PEFR and TV Statistical analysis : Students't' test Results: The FEV1, FVC and PEFR increased significantly from supine to sitting to standing posture in both males and females. The FER significantly increased only when moving from supine to sitting in both males and females. The TV increased significantly by moving from supine to sitting and also from supine to standing postures in both males and females

    A solid state controller for self-excited induction generator for voltage regulation, harmonic compensation and load balancing

    This paper deals with the performance analysis of static compensator (STATCOM) based voltage regulator for self-excited induction generators (SEIGs) supplying balanced/unbalanced and linear/ non-linear loads. In practice, most of the loads are linear. But the presence of non-linear loads in some applications injects harmonics into the generating system. Because an SEIG is a weak isolated system, these harmonics have a great effect on its performance. Additionally, SEIG’s offer poor voltage regulation and require an adjustable reactive power source to maintain a constant terminal voltage under a varying load. A three-phase insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based current controlled voltage source inverter (CC-VSI) known as STATCOM is used for harmonic elimination. It also provides the required reactive power an SEIG needs to maintain a constant terminal voltage under varying loads. A dynamic model of an SEIG-STATCOM system with the ability to simulate varying loads has been developed using a stationary d-q axes reference frame. This enables us to predict the behavior of the system under transient conditions. The simulated results show that by using a STATCOM based voltage regulator the SEIG terminal voltage can be maintained constant and free from harmonics under linear/non linear and balanced/unbalanced loads
