Characterization and comparative evaluation of novel planar electromagnetic sensors

    Get PDF
The characterization of three types of novel planar electromagnetic sensors: 1) meander; 2) mesh; and 3) interdigital configuration, has been studied and their comparative performance has been evaluated based on their areas of applications. All of them are suitable for inspection and evaluation of system properties without destroying them. The experiments on fabricated sensors have been conducted and the results are presented here. The target application is to use a mixture of different types of sensors to detect plasti

A low-cost sensing system for quality monitoring of dairy products

    Get PDF
The dairy industry is in need of a cost-effective, highly reliable, very accurate, and fast measurement system to monitor the quality of dairy products. This paper describes the design and fabrication works undertaken to develop such a system. The techniques used center around planar electromagnetic sensors operating with radio frequency excitation. Computer-aided computation, being fast, facilitates on-line monitoring of the quality. The sensor technology proposed has the ability to perform volumetric penetrative measurements to measure properties throughout the bulk of the product

Cosmic optical activity from an inhomogeneous Kalb-Ramond field

    Get PDF
The effects of introducing a harmonic spatial inhomogeneity into the Kalb-Ramond field, interacting with the Maxwell field according to a `string-inspired' proposal made in earlier work are investigated. We examine in particular the effects on the polarization of synchrotron radiation from cosmologically distant (i.e. of redshift greater than 2) galaxies, as well as the relation between the electric and magnetic components of the radiation field. The rotation of the polarization plane of linearly polarized radiation is seen to acquire an additional contribution proportional to the square of the frequency of the dual Kalb-Ramond axion wave, assuming that it is far smaller compared to the frequency of the radiation field.Comment: 9 pages, Revtex, no figure

Microstructural transformation of vanadium pentoxide powder obtained by high-energy vibrational ball-milling

An X-ray powder profile analysis of vanadium pentoxide powder milled in a high-energy vibrational ball-mill is presented. The strain- and size-induced broadening of the Bragg reflection for two different crystallographic directions ([001] and [100]) were determined by Warren-Averbach (WA) analysis, using a pattern-decomposition method assuming a pseudo-Voigt function. The deformation process causes a decrease in the domain size, and a near isotropic saturation value of similar to 10 nm is reached after severe milling. The initial stages of milling produce a propensity for size broadening, whereas, with increasing milling time, microstrain broadening is predominant. WA analysis indicated significant plastic strain along with spatial confinement of the internal strain fields, probably in the crystallite interfaces. Transmission electron microscopy revealed a drastic change in particle shape after 64 h of milling, indicating the existence of size anisotropy which, however, decreased with further increase of the milling time
