Acupuncture as adjunctive treatment for linezolid-induced peripheral neuropathy: a case series report
BackgroundThe treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and pre-extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (pre-XDR-TB) remains challenging due to the limited availability of effective drugs. Linezolid has emerged as a promising therapeutic option for these cases. However, its long-term use can lead to complications such as peripheral and optic neuropathies. Acupuncture, a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine, has been shown to be effective in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy (PN). This study examines the potential benefits of acupuncture in the treatment of linezolid-induced peripheral neuropathy (LIPN).MethodsFour patients, aged 27 to 60 years, diagnosed with LIPN, underwent daily acupuncture treatments. The main endpoint was to assess the efficacy of acupuncture in reducing neuropathic pain associated with LIPN in patients. This was primarily measured using changes in the Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ) scores before and after acupuncture treatment.ResultsThree of the patients experienced significant symptom remission, while one experienced marginal improvement. Treatments ranged from 7 to 18 sessions. Specifically, the first patient reported substantial relief with a score reduction from 33 to 13; the second patient observed minimal change; the third patient’s score decreased dramatically from 10 to 2 after eight sessions; the last patient had a score reduction from 21 to 12 after five sessions, but did not continue treatment for a second assessment.ConclusionAcupuncture is a promising therapeutic approach for LIPN. However, larger and more thorough studies are needed to determine its full potential
Polarization-Based Reflection Suppression Method and Its Application to Target Detection
Active illumination light becomes strongly reflective interference light after specular reflection. It causes saturation in some areas of the image during target detection, resulting in the inability to recognize detailed target feature information. This greatly limits the application of active illumination detection. Based on the Mueller matrix analysis of the difference in polarization characteristics between the background specular reflected light and the target reflected light, we propose a reflection suppression method based on orthogonal polarization imaging. The method employs a polarization modulation strategy in a bidirectional manner between the light source and the detector. First, the polarization information difference is amplified by active polarized illumination between the background specular reflected light and the target reflected light. Then, the target recovery is achieved by suppressing the background specular reflected light through the polarized orthogonal imaging method. Meanwhile, this method can also be used for moving target detection. The experimental results show that the reflection suppression method of orthogonal polarization imaging can effectively suppress the interference of specular reflection on the target image. Additionally, it can reduce the problems of missed and false detection that occurs in moving target detection and improve the active illumination detection effect
Smoking Status Modifies the Relationship between Th2 Biomarkers and Small Airway Obstruction in Asthma
Background. Cigarette smoking and Th2-inflammation are both crucial in the pathogenesis of asthma. However, it is unknown whether smoking can affect the association between Th2-inflammation and small airway obstruction in adults with asthma. Methods. Adults diagnosed with asthma by a pulmonologist according to Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines were recruited from September 2016 to April 2018 to participate in this study. Participants were divided into two groups, the small airway obstruction group (those with FEF25–75% predicted value ≤ 65%) and the normal small airway function group (those with FEF25–75% predicted value > 65%). Final data analysis included 385 and 93 people in the Obstructive Group and the Normal Group, respectively. Total serum IgE level and blood eosinophil count were used as biomarkers of the Th2 phenotype. Results. The Obstructive Group had a larger fraction of smokers, higher blood eosinophil count, and lower lung function than the Normal Group. Current-smoking status was associated with an increased risk of small airway obstruction (adjusted odds ratio = 4.677, 95% confidence interval [1.593–13.730]); and log-IgE level was associated with a decreased risk of small airway obstruction (0.403 [0.216–0.754]). Smoking status stratified analysis showed an association between log-IgE level and a decreased risk of small airway obstruction only in never-smoker asthmatics (0.487 [0.249–0.954]). Conclusions. Current-smoking status and total serum IgE are, respectively, associated with small airway obstruction. Smoking status modifies the relationship between Th2 biomarkers and small airway function.
