Purpose Few population-based studies have examined the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and risk factors, quality of life (QOL), and health behaviors of cancer survivors and their spouses. This case-control study aimed to fill this gap using the data from a set of large-scale surveys of individuals and families across the USA. Methods Data were obtained from the 2010–2015 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). Using one-to-many (1:5) propensity score matching, we identified cancer survivors (N = 1037) and noncancer-matched controls (N = 5185), as well as survivor spouses (N = 1038) and matched controls (N = 5190). We used weighted multivariable logistic and linear regressions to examine the categorical and numerical outcomes. Results Compared with noncancer controls, survivors have higher rates of stroke (p < .05), hypertension (p < .05), high cholesterol (p < .01), fair or poor health (p < .0001), and report self-reported worse physical QOL scores (PCS) (p < .0001). A higher percentage of survivors report receiving BP checks (p < .01), serum cholesterol assessments (p < .001), routine physical checkups (p < .01), blood stool tests (p < .05), colonoscopies (p < .0001), and flu vaccinations (p < .05). Survivor spouses, compared to their respective matched controls, reported higher rates of serum cholesterol testing (p < .001), routine physical checkups (p < .01), and flu vaccinations (p < .01). Conclusions Compared to the general population, cancer survivors are at higher risk for CVD, report worse physical QOL, and, along with their spouses, more frequently receive certain preventive health care services. Implications for Cancer Survivors There is a need for intervention to more fully engage cancer survivors and spouses in lifestyle behavior change associated with decreased CVD and related risk factors and improved QOL

This paper reports the effects of different formulas on the performance of waterborne polyurethane (WPU), including two-component WPU and curing agent, wetting dispersant, defoaming agent, and wetting agent. The optimization of rheological additives selection, through the optimization of coating physical properties and chemical properties, can make the film show uniform color and appearance without pinholes, bubbles, or wrinkles, and have a long probation period. Through the analysis of performance after a 1000-h quick ultraviolet (QUV) aging test, the light reduction rate is 23.19%, and the color difference is 1.9. As can be seen from the scanning electron microscope (SEM) image and the three-dimensional stereomicroscope, the film shows relatively uniform dispersion, good compactness, and smooth surface. The two-component WPU topcoat is found to have high gloss 87.1 (60°) and high weather resistance, which provides a positive indication for the modulation and production of waterborne locomotive paint

Mo_2C nanocrystals (NCs) anchored on vertically aligned graphene nanoribbons (VA-GNR) as hybrid nanocatalysts (Mo_2C-GNR) are synthesized through the direct carbonization of metallic Mo with atomic H treatment. The growth mechanism of Mo2C NCs with atomic H treatment is discussed. The Mo_2C-GNR hybrid exhibits highly active and durable electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). For HER, in an acidic solution the Mo_2C-GNR has an onset potential of 39 mV and a Tafel slope of 65 mV dec^(-1), in a basic solution Mo_2C-GNR has an onset potential of 53 mV, and Tafel slope of 54 mV dec^(-1). It is stable in both acidic and basic media. Mo2C-GNR is a high activity ORR catalyst with a high peak current density of 2.01 mA cm^(-2), an onset potential of 0.94 V that is more positive vs reversible hydrogen electrode, a high electron transfer number n (∼3.86) and long-term stability

Deep-ultraviolet photonics for the disinfection of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants (Delta and Omicron) in the cryogenic environment

Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) disinfection technology provides an expeditious and efficient way to suppress the transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the influences of viral variants (Delta and Omicron) and low temperatures on the DUV virucidal efficacy are still unknown. Here, we developed a reliable and uniform planar light source comprised of 275-nm light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to investigate the effects of these two unknown factors and delineated the principle behind different disinfection performances. We found the lethal effect of DUV at the same radiation dose was reduced by the cryogenic environment, and a negative-U large-relaxation model was used to explain the difference in view of the photoelectronic nature. The chances were higher in the cryogenic environment for the capture of excited electrons within active genetic molecules back to the initial photo-ionised positions. Additionally, the variant of Omicron required a significantly higher DUV dose to achieve the same virucidal efficacy, and this was thanks to the genetic and proteinic characteristics of the Omicron. The findings in this study are important for human society using DUV disinfection in cold conditions (e.g., the food cold chain logistics and the open air in winter), and the relevant DUV disinfection suggestion against COVID-19 is provided

Deep high-temperature hydrothermal circulation in a detachment faulting system on the ultra-slow spreading ridge. Nature Communications, 11(1), (2020): 1300, doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15062-w.Coupled magmatic and tectonic activity plays an important role in high-temperature hydrothermal circulation at mid-ocean ridges. The circulation patterns for such systems have been elucidated by microearthquakes and geochemical data over a broad spectrum of spreading rates, but such data have not been generally available for ultra-slow spreading ridges. Here we report new geophysical and fluid geochemical data for high-temperature active hydrothermal venting at Dragon Horn area (49.7°E) on the Southwest Indian Ridge. Twin detachment faults penetrating to the depth of 13 ± 2 km below the seafloor were identified based on the microearthquakes. The geochemical composition of the hydrothermal fluids suggests a long reaction path involving both mafic and ultramafic lithologies. Combined with numerical simulations, our results demonstrate that these hydrothermal fluids could circulate ~ 6 km deeper than the Moho boundary and to much greater depths than those at Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse and Logachev-1 hydrothermal fields on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This work was supported by National Key R&D Program of China under contract no. 2018YFC0309901, 2017YFC0306603, 2017YFC0306803, and 2017YFC0306203, COMRA Major Project under contract No. DY135-S1-01-01 and No. DY135-S1-01-06

【Abstract】Activating mutations in NRAS account for 20-30% of melanoma, but despite decades of research and in contrast to BRAF, no effective anti-NRAS therapies have been forthcoming. Here we identify a previously uncharacterized serine/threonine kinase STK19 as a novel NRAS activator. STK19 phosphorylates NRAS to enhance its binding to its downstream effectors and promotes oncogenic NRAS-mediated melanocyte malignant transformation. A recurrent D89N substitution in STK19 whose alterations were identified in 25% of human melanomas represents a gain-of-function mutation that interacts better with NRAS to enhance melanocyte transformation. STK19 D89N knockin leads to skin hyperpigmentation and promotes NRAS Q61R -driven melanomagenesis in vivo. Finally, we developed ZT-12-037-01 (1a) as a specific STK19-targeted inhibitor and showed that it effectively blocks oncogenic NRAS-driven melanocyte malignant transformation and melanoma growth in vitro and in vivo. Together, our findings provide a new and viable therapeutic strategy for melanomas harboring NRAS mutations. We thank Drs.
