The paradigm of tax-reward and tax-punishment strategies in the advancement of public resource management dynamics
In contemporary society, the effective utilization of public resources
remains a subject of significant concern. A common issue arises from defectors
seeking to obtain an excessive share of these resources for personal gain,
potentially leading to resource depletion. To mitigate this tragedy and ensure
sustainable development of resources, implementing mechanisms to either reward
those who adhere to distribution rules or penalize those who do not, appears
advantageous. We introduce two models: a tax-reward model and a tax-punishment
model, to address this issue. Our analysis reveals that in the tax-reward
model, the evolutionary trajectory of the system is influenced not only by the
tax revenue collected but also by the natural growth rate of the resources.
Conversely, the tax-punishment model exhibits distinct characteristics when
compared to the tax-reward model, notably the potential for bistability. In
such scenarios, the selection of initial conditions is critical, as it can
determine the system's path. Furthermore, our study identifies instances where
the system lacks stable points, exemplified by a limit cycle phenomenon,
underscoring the complexity and dynamism inherent in managing public resources
using these models.Comment: Accepted by Proceedings of the Royal Society B-Biological Science
Edge computing service deployment and task offloading based on multi-task high-dimensional multi-objective optimization
The Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) system located close to the client allows
mobile smart devices to offload their computations onto edge servers, enabling
them to benefit from low-latency computing services. Both cloud service
providers and users seek more comprehensive solutions, necessitating judicious
decisions in service deployment and task offloading while balancing multiple
objectives. This study investigates service deployment and task offloading
challenges in a multi-user environment, framing them as a multi-task
high-dimensional multi-objective optimization (MT-HD-MOO) problem within an
edge environment. To ensure stable service provisioning, beyond considering
latency, energy consumption, and cost as deployment objectives, network
reliability is also incorporated. Furthermore, to promote equitable usage of
edge servers, load balancing is introduced as a fourth task offloading
objective, in addition to latency, energy consumption, and cost. Additionally,
this paper designs a MT-HD-MOO algorithm based on a multi-selection strategy to
address this model and its solution. By employing diverse selection strategies,
an environment selection strategy pool is established to enhance population
diversity within the high-dimensional objective space. Ultimately, the
algorithm's effectiveness is verified through simulation experiments
Association between IgG4 Autoantibody and Complement Abnormalities in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
In order to investigate the association between IgG4 autoantibody and complement abnormalities in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 72 newly diagnosed SLE patients, 67 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, and 41 healthy normals were employed. Serum levels of antinuclear IgG4 and IgG4-specific IgM-rheumatoid factor (RF) were measured, and the correlations between serum levels of antinuclear IgG4 and several clinical parameters were analyzed. Also, the levels of IgG subclasses, C1q, and C3 deposition in lupus nephritis (LN) were detected. The results showed that serum levels of antinuclear IgG4 were higher in SLE patients relative to healthy normals (P<0.01). Serum levels of antinuclear IgG4 in SLE patients were positively correlated with serum levels of total IgG4, albumin, and C3 (r=0.61, P<0.05; r=0.40, P<0.05; and r=0.54, P<0.05, resp.) and negatively correlated with 24-hour urinary protein (r=0.49, P<0.05). Serum levels of IgG4-specific IgM-RF were higher in RA patients than in SLE patients (P<0.001). Also, the ratio of the deposition score for IgG4/(IgG1 + IgG2 + IgG3 + IgG4) was negatively correlated with the score for C1q and C3 deposition in LN (r=0.34, P<0.05; r=0.51, P<0.01, resp.). In summary, the IgG4 autoantibody may dampen the inflammatory response in SLE, thus maybe providing a novel therapeutic target for SLE
Metal-organic frameworks for food contaminant adsorption and detection
Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) have been widely used in food contamination adsorption and detection due to their large specific surface area, specific pore structure and flexible post-modification. MOFs with specific pore size can be targeted for selective adsorption of some contaminants and can be used as pretreatment and pre-concentration steps to purify samples and enrich target analytes for food contamination detection to improve the detection efficiency. In addition, MOFs, as a new functional material, play an important role in developing new rapid detection methods that are simple, portable, inexpensive and with high sensitivity and accuracy. The aim of this paper is to summarize the latest and insightful research results on MOFs for the adsorption and detection of food contaminants. By summarizing Zn-based, Cu-based and Zr-based MOFs with low cost, easily available raw materials and convenient synthesis conditions, we describe their principles and discuss their applications in chemical and biological contaminant adsorption and sensing detection in terms of stability, adsorption capacity and sensitivity. Finally, we present the limitations and challenges of MOFs in food detection, hoping to provide some ideas for future development
Surface electrocardiographic characteristics in coronavirus disease 2019: repolarization abnormalities associated with cardiac involvement
AIMS
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly around the globe, causing significant morbidity and mortality. This study aims to describe electrocardiographic (ECG) characteristics of COVID-19 patients and to identify ECG parameters that are associated with cardiac involvement.
METHODS AND RESULTS
The study included patients who were hospitalized with COVID-19 diagnosis and had cardiac biomarker assessments and simultaneous 12-lead surface ECGs. Sixty-three hospitalized patients (median 53 [inter-quartile range, 43-65] years, 76.2% male) were enrolled, including patients with (n = 23) and without (n = 40) cardiac injury. Patients with cardiac injury were older, had more pre-existing co-morbidities, and had higher mortality than those without cardiac injury. They also had prolonged QTc intervals and more T wave changes. Logistic regression model identified that the number of abnormal T waves (odds ratio (OR), 2.36 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.38-4.04], P = 0.002) and QTc interval (OR, 1.31 [95% CI, 1.03-1.66], P = 0.027) were independent indicators for cardiac injury. The combination model of these two parameters along with age could well discriminate cardiac injury (area the under curve 0.881, P < 0.001) by receiver operating characteristic analysis. Cox regression model identified that the presence of T wave changes was an independent predictor of mortality (hazard ratio, 3.57 [1.40, 9.11], P = 0.008) after adjustment for age.
CONCLUSIONS
In COVID-19 patients, presence of cardiac injury at admission is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Repolarization abnormalities on surface ECG such as abnormal T waves and prolonged QTc intervals are more common in patients with cardiac involvement and can help in further risk stratification
Quality Differences of Zhenghe White Tea from Different Altitudes
To explore the effect of growing altitude on the quality of Zhenghe white tea, the sensory quality and biochemical composition of tea leaves and Zhenghe white tea from different altitudes were evaluated, and multivariate statistical analysis was applied to the obtained data. The results of sensory evaluation showed that there were significant differences in the quality of white tea from different altitudes. The mid- and high-altitude white tea tasted fresh, mellow and clean with a clean and pure aroma, while the low-altitude white tea tasted mellow and thick with a floral aroma. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) showed that soluble sugars, caffeine, 3-carene, verbenenol, terpene oleene, cis-2-pentenol, 2-ethylfuran and cis-2-hexene-1-alcohol were the key components to distinguish fresh tea leaves from different altitudes. The contents of soluble sugar, cis-2-hexene-1 alcohol and cis-2-pentenol were higher in the mid- and high-altitude samples, while the contents of volatile components such as caffeine, 3-carene, verbenol and terpinolene were higher in the low-altitude samples. Soluble sugar, free amino acid, terpinolene, verbenol, 2-ethyl furan, 2-methylbutyraldehyde, 2-phenylethanol and 3-carene were the key components to distinguish white tea from different altitudes. The contents of soluble sugar and free amino acid were higher in the high-altitude white tea, and the contents of volatile components such as terpinolene, verbenol, phenyl ethanol and 3-carene were higher in the mid- and low-altitude samples, but low in the high-altitude samples. According to odor activity value (OAV) analysis, 2-methyl butyl aldehyde, 3-carene and terpinolene could be used as the characteristic volatile components to identify white tea samples from different altitudes. The results of this study will provide a reference for further exploring the flavor quality of tea from different altitudes
CD62L+ NKT cells have prolonged persistence and antitumor activity in vivo
Vα24-invariant natural killer T cells (NKTs) localize to tumors and have inherent antitumor properties, making them attractive chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) carriers for redirected cancer immunotherapy. However, clinical application of CAR-NKTs has been impeded, as mechanisms responsible for NKT expansion and the in vivo persistence of these cells are unknown. Here, we demonstrated that antigen-induced expansion of primary NKTs in vitro associates with the accumulation of a CD62L+ subset and exhaustion of CD62L– cells. Only CD62L+ NKTs survived and proliferated in response to secondary stimulation. When transferred to immune-deficient NSG mice, CD62L+ NKTs persisted 5 times longer than CD62L– NKTs. Moreover, CD62L+ cells transduced with a CD19-specific CAR achieved sustained tumor regression in a B cell lymphoma model. Proliferating CD62L+ cells downregulated or maintained CD62L expression when activated via T cell receptor alone or in combination with costimulatory receptors. We generated HLAnull K562 cell clones that were engineered to express CD1d and costimulatory ligands. Clone B-8-2 (HLAnullCD1dmedCD86high4-1BBLmedOX40Lhigh) induced the highest rates of NKT expansion and CD62L expression. B-8-2–expanded CAR-NKTs exhibited prolonged in vivo persistence and superior therapeutic activities in models of lymphoma and neuroblastoma. Therefore, we have identified CD62L as a marker of a distinct NKT subset endowed with high proliferative potential and have developed artificial antigen-presenting cells that generate CD62L-enriched NKTs for effective cancer immunotherapy
Spike 1 trimer, a nanoparticle vaccine against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus induces protective immunity challenge in piglets
Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is considered the cause for porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) outbreaks and hefty losses in pig farming. However, no effective commercial vaccines against PEDV mutant strains are available nowadays. Here, we constructed three native-like trimeric candidate nanovaccines, i.e., spike 1 trimer (S1-Trimer), collagenase equivalent domain trimer (COE-Trimer), and receptor-binding domain trimer (RBD-Trimer) for PEDV based on Trimer-Tag technology. And evaluated its physical properties and immune efficacy. The result showed that the candidate nanovaccines were safe for mice and pregnant sows, and no animal death or miscarriage occurred in our study. S1-Trimer showed stable physical properties, high cell uptake rate and receptor affinity. In the mouse, sow and piglet models, immunization of S1-Trimer induced high-level of humoral immunity containing PEDV-specific IgG and IgA. S1-Trimer-driven mucosal IgA responses and systemic IgG responses exhibited high titers of virus neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) in vitro. S1-Trimer induced Th1-biased cellular immune responses in mice. Moreover, the piglets from the S1-Trimer and inactivated vaccine groups displayed significantly fewer microscopic lesions in the intestinal tissue, with only one and two piglets showing mild diarrhea. The viral load in feces and intestines from the S1-Trimer and inactivated vaccine groups were significantly lower than those of the PBS group. For the first time, our data demonstrated the protective efficacy of Trimer-Tag-based nanovaccines used for PEDV. The S1-Trimer developed in this study was a competitive vaccine candidate, and Trimer-Tag may be an important platform for the rapid production of safe and effective subunit vaccines in the future
Reverse genetics construction and pathogenicity of a novel recombinant NADC30-like PRRSV isolated in China
China has the largest pig herd in the world which accounts for more than 50% of the global pig population. Over the past three decades, the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has caused significant economic loss to the Chinese swine industry. Currently, the prevalent PRRSV strains in the field are extremely complicated, and the NADC30-like strains, NADC34-like strains, and novel recombinant viruses have become a great concern to PRRS control in China. In this study, a novel NADC30-like PRRSV, named GS2022, was isolated from the lung of a dead pig collected from a farm that experienced a PRRS outbreak. The complete genome of GS2022 shares the highest identity with the NADC30 strain and contains a discontinuous deletion of 131 aa in nsp2. Novel deletion and insertion have been identified in ORF7 and 3’UTR. Recombination analysis revealed that the GS2022 is a potential recombinant of NADC30-like and JXA1-like strains. Both inter-lineage and intra-lineage recombination events were predicted to be involved in the generation of the GS2022. An infectious cDNA clone of GS2022 was assembled to generate the isogenic GS2022 (rGS2022). The growth kinetics of rGS2022 were almost identical to those of GS2022. The pathogenicity of the GS2022 and rGS2022 was evaluated using a nursery piglet model. In the infection groups, the piglets exhibited mild clinical symptoms, including short periods of fever and respiratory diseases. Both gross lesions and histopathological lesions were observed in the lungs and lymph nodes of the infected piglets. Therefore, we reported a novel recombinant NADC30-like PRRSV strain with moderate pathogenicity in piglets. These results provide new information on the genomic characteristics and pathogenicity of the NADC30-like PRRSV in China
