Effect of external conditions on the structure of scrolled graphene edges
Characteristic dimensions of carbon nanoscrolls - "buckyrolls" - are
calculated by analyzing the competition between elastic, van der Waals, and
electrostatic energies for representative models of suspended and
substrate-deposited graphene samples. The results are consistent with both
atomistic simulations and experimental observations of scrolled graphene edges.
Electrostatic control of the wrapping is shown to be practically feasible and
its possible device applications are indicated.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Intrinsic frustration effects in anisotropic superconductors
Lattice distortions in which the axes are locally rotated provide an
intrinsic source of frustration in anisotropic superconductors. A general
framework to study this effect is presented. The influence of lattice defects
and phonons in and layered superconductors is studied.Comment: enlarged versio
Low temperature properties of a quantum particle coupled to dissipative environments
We study the dynamics of a quantum particle coupled to dissipative (ohmic)
environments, such as an electron liquid. For some choices of couplings, the
properties of the particle can be described in terms of an effective mass. A
particular case is the three dimensional dirty electron liquid. In other
environments, like the one described by the Caldeira-Leggett model, the
effective mass diverges at low temperatures, and quantum effects are strongly
suppressed. For interactions within this class, arbitrarily weak potentials
lead to localized solutions. Particles bound to external potentials, or moving
in closed orbits, can show a first order transition, between strongly and
weakly localized regimes.Comment: 10 page
Quantum Chinos Game: winning strategies through quantum fluctuations
We apply several quantization schemes to simple versions of the Chinos game.
Classically, for two players with one coin each, there is a symmetric stable
strategy that allows each player to win half of the times on average. A partial
quantization of the game (semiclassical) allows us to find a winning strategy
for the second player, but it is unstable w.r.t. the classical strategy.
However, in a fully quantum version of the game we find a winning strategy for
the first player that is optimal: the symmetric classical situation is broken
at the quantum level.Comment: REVTEX4.b4 file, 3 table
Existence and topological stability of Fermi points in multilayered graphene
We study the existence and topological stability of Fermi points in a
graphene layer and stacks with many layers. We show that the discrete
symmetries (spacetime inversion) stabilize the Fermi points in monolayer,
bilayer and multilayer graphene with orthorhombic stacking. The bands near
and in multilayers with the Bernal stacking depend on the
parity of the number of layers, and Fermi points are unstable when the number
of layers is odd. The low energy changes in the electronic structure induced by
commensurate perturbations which mix the two Dirac points are also
investigated.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. Expanded version as will appear in PR
Asymptotic tunneling conductance in Luttinger liquids
Conductance through weak constrictions in Luttinger liquids is shown to
vanish with frequency as , where
is a dimensionless parameter characterizing the Luttinger liquid phase, and
and are nonuniversal constants. The first term arises from the ^^
Coulomb blockade' effect and dominates for , whereas the second
results from eliminating high-energy modes and dominates for .Comment: Latex file + one appended postcript figur
Finite Size Analysis of Luttinger Liquids with a source of 2k_f Scattering
Numerical analysis of the spectrum of large finite size Luttinger liquids
(g<1) in the presence of a single source of 2k_f scattering has been made
possible thanks to an effective integration of high degrees of freedom.
Presence of irrelevant operators and their manifestation in transport are
issues treated independently. We confirm the existence of two irrelevant
operators: particle hopping and charge oscillations, with regions of dominance
separated by g=1/2. Temperature dependence of conductance is shown to be
dominated by hopping alone. Frequency dependence is affected by both irrelevant
operators.Comment: 4 pages, LaTex (RevTex), 3 PostScript figures appende
