This note summarises theoretical developments in the field of hot and dense matter and their relevance for observables accessible to ALICE in nucleus-nucleus, proton-nucleus and proton-proton collisions. In addition, aspects of specific interest for proton-proton, proton-nucleus, ultra-peripheral collisions and cosmic-ray physics, which can be addressed by ALICE, are also discussed
