This project is a feasibility study for the production and marketing of cherimoya
(Annona cherimola Mil) and the use of a new improved genetic material, more
productive, ecotype T61 Tumbaco. This fruit crop is produced in the valleys of
Imbabura, Pichincha, Azuay, and Loja, having favorable climatic and soil
conditions. Market research indicates that in Ecuador there is an unsatisfied
demand for domestic consumption. A survey involving the farmers of the Quito
area revealed the reasons why cherimoya supply has not increased, whereas a
consumer survey confirmed the estimate that consumption does not meet
demand due to lack of regular production throughout the year. The technical
study provides information on good practices, such as the handling of planting
density, formation, fruiting and rejuvenation pruning, hand pollination to
increase the number of flowers pollinated, pest control, limited to the control of
fruit fly (Anastrepha sp) and the application of appropriate techniques in the
collection, fruit selection, storage, packaging and delivery to retailer or
consumer. All these practices aim to improve farmer income and, therefore,
increase the profitability of the operation. The project includes implementation of
four hectares of land and an initial fruit yield of 15,000 kilograms of fruit per
hectare (60,000 kilograms in four hectares) from the third year on, with an
annual increase of 1,000 kilograms per hectare. The expected revenues were
estimated with a selling price of 130,270.48 to be financed 70%
by a bank loan and 30% equity. Both, Internal Rate of Return IRR (21%) and
the net present value NPV (78,985.73), represents approximately 40% of the expected total income
Re-constructing masculinity following radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is common in older men. Surgical treatment involving removal of the prostate can result in temporary or permanent erectile dysfunction and incontinence and have a major impact on men’s masculine identity. Seven men were interviewed about their experiences and concerns following prostatectomy and the transcripts were analysed employing Foucauldian Discourse Analysis in order to identify the ways in which they constructed their masculinity. Participants drew upon four main discourses when discussing the impact of surgical treatment on their sense of masculinity: masculine identity and sexual activity, erectile dysfunction as a normative experience, mental resilience and vulnerability. Penetrative sex was constructed as central to a masculine identity but inability to achieve this was normalised in terms of the ageing process. Stereotypically masculine qualities of emotional control and rationality were drawn on in describing their reaction to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer but they also experienced a new-found sense of physical vulnerability. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the clinical management of erectile dysfunction post-surgery and helping men adjust to life following treatment
The potential impact of entrepreneurship education on doctoral students within the non-commercial research environment in Chile
Chilean doctoral programs in science and technology generally do not consider entrepreneurial training within their curricula. Taking an entrepreneurial competency approach, we explore the potential impact of introducing an entrepreneurship education course to doctoral students based within a non-commercial research environment. We identified two main areas of possible impact: the potential effects upon doctoral research projects and the potential effects upon the doctoral students themselves. We followed the learning experiences of science and technology PhD students before, during, and a year after an entrepreneurial course through a multiple case study research design. Our results suggest that entrepreneurship education has a positive impact upon the development of student's creative problem solving and communication skills. This was reported to have a generally positive effect upon the students' doctoral projects and on the student's self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intentions. We conclude that entrepreneurship education complements traditional doctoral training for students within a non commercial academic setting
Introduction. Introduction. Weight gain is one of the most troubling adverse effects of atypical anti- psychotics due to their cardiovascular risk and other factors. The main objective is to assess possible changes of body weight and body mass index at 6 months associated with onset of antipsychotic treatment in ordinary clinical use. Methods. It's a cohort, multicentre, prospective study. Results. A cohort of 71 patients treated with antipsychotics was recruited (median=54 years). A total of 60% of patients showed an increase of body weight at the end of the follow- up period. In males (32%, median=37 years), it was obtained that mean body weight at base- line was 74, 9 kg (DE=15,4)and at 6 months 81,1 kg (DE=16,7); mean body mass index at baseline was 25,1 kg/m2 (DE=4,2) and at 6 months 27,1 kg/m2 (DE=4,6). In women (68%, median=61,5 years), it was obtained that mean body weight at baseline was 61,4 kg (DE=10,0) and at 6 months 63, 0 kg (DE=11,2); mean body mass index at baseline 26,6 kg/m2 (DE=4,9) and at 6 months 27,0 kg/m2 (DE=4,6). Increase of body weight over 2 kg was significantly higher in patients under 55 years and males. Conclusions. Onset of antipsychotic treatment in ordinary clinical use is associated with an increase of patients' body weight and body mass index at 6 months, both for men and women. A multidisciplinary research team focused on the study of antipsychotic use of has been established
Energy Efficient Content Distribution in an ISP Network
International audienceWe study the problem of reducing power consump- tion in an Internet Service Provider (ISP) network by designing the content distribution infrastructure managed by the operator. We propose an algorithm to optimally decide where to cache the content inside the ISP network. We evaluate our solution over two case studies driven by operators feedback. Results show that the energy-efficient design of the content infrastructure brings substantial savings, both in terms of energy and in terms of bandwidth required at the peering point of the operator. Moreover, we study the impact of the content characteristics and the power consumption models. Finally, we derive some insights for the design of future energy-aware networks

Random phase approximation for multi-band Hubbard models
We derive the random-phase approximation for spin excitations in general
multi-band Hubbard models, starting from a collinear ferromagnetic Hartree-Fock
ground state. The results are compared with those of a recently introduced
variational many-body approach to spin-waves in itinerant ferromagnets. As we
exemplify for Hubbard models with one and two bands, the two approaches lead to
qualitatively different results. The discrepancies can be traced back to the
fact that the Hartree-Fock theory fails to describe properly the local moments
which naturally arise in a correlated-electron theory.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figure
