    Magnification of Plasmon Resonances in Monolayer MoS2_{2} via Conjugated Molecular Adsorbates

    The adsorption of carbon-conjugated molecules represents an established route to tune the electronic and optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers. Here, we demonstrate from first principles that such a functionalization with prototypical compounds pyrene and tetracene can also enhance the magnitude of selected plasmon resonances in a MoS2_2 single sheet, without significantly altering their energy and dispersion. Our proof-of-principle results indicate that such a magnification can be achieved by proper alignment of the molecules with respect to the direction of the transferred momentum. The distinct signatures in the loss function of the interface compared to those of its constituents suggest not only the presence of non-negligible interactions between them but also the possibility of using electron energy loss spectroscopy to detect the presence and the orientation of molecular adsorbates on TMDCs

    Donors, acceptors, and a bit of aromatics: electronic interactions of molecular adsorbates on hBN and MoS<sub>2</sub> monolayers

    The design of low-dimensional organic-inorganic interfaces for the next generation of opto-electronic applications requires in-depth understanding of the microscopic mechanisms ruling electronic interactions in these systems. In this work, we present a first-principles study based on density-functional theory inspecting the structural, energetic, and electronic properties of five molecular donors and acceptors adsorbed on freestanding hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayers. All considered interfaces are stable, due to the crucial contribution of dispersion interactions, which are maximized by the overall flat arrangement of the physisorbed molecules on both substrates. The level alignment of the hybrid systems depends on the characteristics of the constituents. On hBN, both type-I and type-II interfaces may form, depending on the relative energies of the frontier orbitals with respect to the vacuum level. On the other hand, all MoS2-based hybrid systems exhibit a type-II level alignment, with the molecular frontier orbitals positioned across the energy gap of the semiconductor. The electronic structure of the hybrid materials is further determined by the formation of interfacial dipole moments and by the wave-function hybridization between the organic and inorganic constituents. These results provide important indications for the design of novel low-dimensional hybrid materials with suitable characteristics for opto-electronics

    Atomic-scale perspective on individual thiol-terminated molecules anchored to single S vacancies in MoS2

    Sulfur vacancies in MoS2 on Au(111) have been shown to be negatively charged as reflected by a Kondo resonance. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to show that these vacancies serve as anchoring sites for thiol-based molecules (CF3−3⁢P−SH) with two distinct reaction products, one of them showing a Kondo resonance. Based on comparisons with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, including a random structure search and computation of energies and electronic properties at a hybrid exchange-correlation functional level, we conclude that both anchored molecules are charge neutral. We propose that one of them is an anchored intact CF3−3⁢P−SH molecule while the other one is the result of catalytically activated dehydrogenation to CF3−3⁢P−S with subsequent anchoring. Our investigations highlight a perspective of functionalizing defects with thiol-terminated molecules that can be equipped with additional functional groups, such as charge donor or acceptor moieties, switching units, or magnetic centers

    Pulmonary arterial hypertension in children with congenital heart disease: a deeper look into the role of endothelial progenitor cells and circulating endothelial cells to assess disease severity

    Endothelial progenitor cells and circulating endothelial cells have been proposed as useful markers of severity and disease progression in certain vascular diseases, including pulmonary arterial hypertension. Our study focused on evaluating the levels of circulating endothelial progenitor cells and circulating endothelial cells in patients with congenital left-to-right shunts and pulmonary hypertension undergoing definitive repair. Endothelial progenitor cells (identified by simultaneous co-expression of CD45dim, CD34 + and KDR2 + surface antibodies) and circulating endothelial cells (identified by simultaneous co-expression of inherent antibodies CD45-, CD31+, CD146 + and CD105+) were prospectively measured in seventy-four children (including children with Down syndrome), median age six years (2.75–10), with clinically significant left-to-right shunts undergoing transcatheter or surgical repair and compared to thirty healthy controls. Endothelial progenitor cells and, particularly, circulating endothelial cells were significantly higher in children with heart disease and pulmonary arterial hypertension when compared to controls. Endothelial progenitor cells showed significant correlation with pulmonary vascular resistance index when measured both systemically (r = 0.259; p = 0.026) and in the superior vena cava (r = 0.302; p = 0.009). Children with Down syndrome showed a stronger correlation between systemic cellularity and pulmonary vascular resistance index (r = 0.829; p = 0.002). Endothelial progenitor cells were reduced along their transit through the lung, whereas circulating endothelial cells did not suffer any modification across the pulmonary circulation. In children with yet to be repaired left-to-right shunts, endothelial progenitor cells and circulating endothelial cell counts are increased compared to healthy subjects

    Archeological patrimony spatial data infrastructure implementation: Tolmo de Minateda

    En este artículo se presenta la solución desarrollada para una Infraestructura de Datos Espaciales Arqueológica incorporando productos geomáticos de muy alta resolución. El caso de estudio principal es el Parque Arqueológico del Tolmo de Minateda (Hellín, Albacete). Entre la información geográfica de alta resolución publicada se incluyen ortoimágenes, modelos digitales de superficie, nubes de puntos y el marco de referencia topográfico. En el artículo se describe el instrumental y la metodología empleadas en su producción. La IDE implementada intenta cumplir los estándares aplicables, integrando entre sus componentes un visualizador, un directorio de servicios, y un catálogo de metadatos de datos y servicios. Entre las características que diferencian al visualizador desarrollado de los convencionales en las IDE destaca la particularidad de permitir desplegar visualizadores 3D de algunos productos geomáticos, nubes de puntos y modelos texturizados. También se integra gestión de usuarios para controlar la información accesible en función de cada perfil. Finalmente, en el propio visor se incorporan herramientas de descarga de productos geomáticos. The main study case is the Archaeological Park of Tolmo de Minateda (Hellín, Albacete). High resolution published geographical information includes orthoimages, digital surface models, point clouds and the topographic reference frame. This article describes the instruments and methodology used in its production. The implemented SDI tries to be comnformant with applicable standards, integrating in its components a viewer, a services directory, and a catalog of data and services metadata. Among the characteristics that differentiate the developed visewer from the usual ones in other SDIs, it is remarkable the possibility of open 3D viewers for some geomatics products, point clouds and textured models. User management is also integrated to control the information accessible according to each profile. Finally, geomatic products download tools are incorporated into the viewer.     Adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells for the treatment of patients with severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia requiring mechanical ventilation. A proof of concept study

    Background: Identification of effective treatments in severe cases of COVID-19 requiring mechanical ventilation represents an unmet medical need. Our aim was to determine whether the administration of adipose-tissue derived mesenchymal stromal cells (AT-MSC) is safe and potentially useful in these patients. Methods: Thirteen COVID-19 adult patients under invasive mechanical ventilation who had received previous antiviral and/or anti-inflammatory treatments (including steroids, lopinavir/ritonavir, hydroxychloroquine and/or tocilizumab, among others) were treated with allogeneic AT-MSC. Ten patients received two doses, with the second dose administered a median of 3 days (interquartile range-IQR- 1 day) after the first one. Two patients received a single dose and another patient received 3 doses. Median number of cells per dose was 0.98 × 106 (IQR 0.50 × 106) AT-MSC/kg of recipient's body weight. Potential adverse effects related to cell infusion and clinical outcome were assessed. Additional parameters analyzed included changes in imaging, analytical and inflammatory parameters. Findings: First dose of AT-MSC was administered at a median of 7 days (IQR 12 days) after mechanical ventilation. No adverse events were related to cell therapy. With a median follow-up of 16 days (IQR 9 days) after the first dose, clinical improvement was observed in nine patients (70%). Seven patients were extubated and discharged from ICU while four patients remained intubated (two with an improvement in their ventilatory and radiological parameters and two in stable condition). Two patients died (one due to massive gastrointestinal bleeding unrelated to MSC therapy). Treatment with AT-MSC was followed by a decrease in inflammatory parameters (reduction in C-reactive protein, IL-6, ferritin, LDH and d-dimer) as well as an increase in lymphocytes, particularly in those patients with clinical improvement. Interpretation: Treatment with intravenous administration of AT-MSC in 13 severe COVID-19 pneumonia under mechanical ventilation in a small case series did not induce significant adverse events and was followed by clinical and biological improvement in most subjects. De estas, el 30 % se originaron por condiciones cardiovasculares que se explican principalmente por factores de riesgo como sedentarismo, tabaquismo y patrones de alimentación no saludables. El exceso de consumo de grasas provenientes de la dieta, especialmente saturadas y trans, está relacionado con diversos efectos negativos en salud. En la población colombiana, la ingesta de grasas está dada principalmente por el uso de aceites empleados en frituras y el consumo de productos comestibles ultraprocesados.     Characteristics of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus newly treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists (CHADIG Study): a cross-sectional multicentre study in Spain

    Objective: Several glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (GLP-1Ra) have been made recently available in Spain for type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) treatment. There are no published data on the clinical and sociodemographic profile of patients initiating treatment with GLP-1Ra in Spain. Our objective was to understand these patients' characteristics in a real-world clinical practice setting. Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Setting: Spanish specialist outpatient clinics. Participants: 403 adults with DM2 initiating GLP-1Ra treatment were included. Primary and secondary outcome measures: Sociodemographic and DM2-related clinical data, including treatment at and after GLP-1Ra initiation and comorbidities, were collected. Results: Evaluable patients (n=403; 50.9% female) were included ( July 2013 to March 2014) at 24 centres by 53 specialists (47 endocrinology, 6 internal medicine), with the following profile (value±SD): age (58.3±10.4 years), diabetes duration (9.9±7 years), body mass index (BMI; 36.2±5.5) and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c; 8.4±1.4%); 14% had HbA1c≤7%. Previous antidiabetic treatment: 53.8% only oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs), 5.2% insulin and 40% insulin and OAD; of those receiving OAD, 35% single drug, 38.2% 2 drugs and 24% 3 drugs. Concomitant to GLP-1Ra, 55.3% were only on OAD, 36.2% on insulin and OAD, and 7.2% only on insulin. Of those receiving OAD, the GLP-1Ra was mainly associated with 1 drug (65%) or 2 drugs (31.8%). GLP-1Ra are frequently added to existing antidiabetic drugs, with dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors being the OAD most frequently switched (45% receiving 1 before starting GLP-1Ra, only 2.7% receiving it concomitantly). Conclusions: In Spain, GLP-1Ra therapy is usually started in combination with OADs or OADs and insulin. These drugs are used in relatively young patients often not reaching therapeutic goals with other treatment combinations, roughly a decade after diagnosis and with a relatively high BMI.
