    Due to the scarce information about the epidemiological features of schistosomiasis in which the vector is Biomphalaria tenagophila, an investigation was carried in Pedro de Toledo in 1980 where such peculiarity is observed. Stool examinations (Kato-Katz method) were performed in 4,741 individuals (22.8% positive to Schistosoma mansoni eggs) of this 583 had previously received chemoterapy and 4,158 remainders, untreated. The schistosomiasis prevalence in those two groups where respectively 31.7% and 21.6%. Epidemiological investigation showed that 83.6% were autochthonous cases from the studied area: the autochthonous prevalence rate, and the intensity of infection in the untreated autochthonous cases were higher in males than in females; the intensity in the latter untreated group was low, 58.5 eggs/g feces (geometric mean). Moreover, according to the age groups the intensity of infections correlated well (r s = 0.745) with the prevalence rates. Schistosomiasis was verified to occur mostly during the leisure time and by the use of water streams for housework in rural zone. Only 0.4% out of 1,137 snails was positive for S. mansoni cercariae, apparently unchanged from the 1978 study when the human prevalence was 12.0%. The studied area presented differences and similarities in relation to the other Brazilian areas were the main intermediate host is B. glabrata.Devido à escassez de dados epidemiológicos sobre esquistossomose mansônica onde Biomphalaria tenagophila é vetor foi desenvolvido em 1980 o presente trabalho, no município paulista de Pedro de Toledo. Foram examinadas fezes de 4741 pessoas (Método de Kato-Katz) com prevalência de 22,8%; entre essas, 583 foram tratadas para a endemia anteriormente e 4158 não medicadas; as prevalências nos dois grupos for ram, respectivamente, 31,7% e 21,6%. Por investigação epidemiológica constatou-se que 83,6% dos casos foram autóctones da área estudada. Prevalência dos autóctones e intensidade de infecção nos portadores autóctones não tratados foram maiores no homem do que na mulher; a intensidade no último grupo foi baixa: 58,5 ovos/ g de fezes (média geométrica). De acordo com grupos etários, se correlacionaram bem (r s = 0,745) as intensidades de infecção e as prevalências. A infecção ocorreu, na zona rural, principalmente, durante lazer e trabalho doméstico. Somente 0,4% de 1137 moluscos foram positivos para Schistosoma mansoni. Esse índice foi, aparentemente, o mesmo em estudo de 1978 quando a prevalência humana era de 12,0%.     Bone Marrow-Derived Stem Cell Populations Are Differentially Regulated by Thyroid or/and Ovarian Hormone Loss

    Bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMDSCs) play an essential role in organ repair and regeneration. The molecular mechanisms by which hormones control BMDSCs proliferation and differentiation are unclear. Our aim in this study was to investigate how a lack of ovarian or/and thyroid hormones affects stem cell number in bone marrow lineage. To examine the effect of thyroid or/and ovarian hormones on the proliferative activity of BMDSCs, we removed the thyroid or/and the ovaries of adult female rats. An absence of ovarian and thyroid hormones was confirmed by Pap staining and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) measurement, respectively. To obtain the stem cells from the bone marrow, we punctured the iliac crest, and aspirated and isolated cells by using a density gradient. Specific markers were used by cytometry to identify the different BMDSCs types: endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), precursor B cells/pro-B cells, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Interestingly, our results showed that hypothyroidism caused a significant increase in the percentage of EPCs, whereas a lack of ovarian hormones significantly increased the precursor B cells/pro-B cells. Moreover, the removal of both glands led to increased MSCs. In conclusion, both ovarian and thyroid hormones appear to have key and diverse roles in regulating the proliferation of cells populations of the bone marrow

    Beneficial Roles of Cellulose Patch-Mediated Cell Therapy in Myocardial Infarction: A Preclinical Study

    Biological scaffolds have become an attractive approach for repairing the infarcted myocardium and have been shown to facilitate constructive remodeling in injured tissues. This study aimed to investigate the possible utilization of bacterial cellulose (BC) membrane patches containing cocultured cells to limit myocardial postinfarction pathology. Myocardial infarction (MI) was induced by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery in 45 Wistar rats, and patches with or without cells were attached to the hearts. After one week, the animals underwent echocardiography to assess for ejection fraction and left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes. Following patch formation, the cocultured cells retained viability of >90% over 14 days in culture. The patch was applied to the myocardial surface of the infarcted area after staying 14 days in culture. Interestingly, the BC membrane without cellular treatment showed higher preservation of cardiac dimensions; however, we did not observe improvement in the left ventricular ejection fraction of this group compared to coculture-treated membranes. Our results demonstrated an important role for BC in supporting cells known to produce cardioprotective soluble factors and may thus provide effective future therapeutic outcomes for patients suffering from ischemic heart disease

    A fim de conhecer a distribuição dos hospedeiros intermediários de S. mansoni no Estado de São Paulo (Brasil), a Superintendência de Controle de Endemias (SUCEN) procedeu a amplo inquérito malacológico em todos os municípios paulistas que teve a duração de 4 anos. As pesquisas realizadas na 4ª Região Administrativa que tem sede em Sorocaba e que constituem o objeto do presente relato, mostraram que Biomphalaria tenagophila (d'Orbigny, 1835) ocorre em 26 dos 59 municípios nela compreendidos. Biomphalaria glabrata (Say, 1818) é encontrada em 9 municípios e Biomphalaria straminea (Dunker, 1848), em 2. Vários casos de esquistossomose em migrantes já foram observados na área estudada. B. tenagophila parece estar implicada na cadeia natural de transmissão de S. mansoni em Itu e em São Roque, municípios em que foram descobertos os dois únicos casos da doença, até agora considerados como autóctones em toda a região.<br>In order to discover the actual distribution of the intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, a planorbidic survey was made in the 572 counties of the State. Investigation carried out in the State's 4th Administrative Region, which comprises 59 counties, has shown that Biomphalaria tenagophila (d'Orbigny, 1835), Biomphalaria glabrata (Say, 1818) and Biomphalaria straminea (Dunker, 1848) are found, respectively, in twenty nine, nine and two of the counties. Many cases of schistosomiasis were detected among migrants to the Region but, up to the present, only two patients - at Itu and São Roque - could have contracted, the disease in the studied area. It seems that the fluke was intermediated by B. tenagophila
