Simultaneous removal of phosphorus and nitrogen from sewage using a novel combo system of fluidized bed reactor-membrane bioreactor (FBR-MBR)

A FBR-MBR combo system was designed as a novel approach for simultaneous phosphorus and nitrogen removal from sewage. The combo system was evaluated more than 7months under variable pH (7.5-9.5), hydraulic retention times (HRT=2-10h), intermittent aeration cycles (IAC) (on/off=60/60-15/45min) and sludge retention times (SRT=10-60d). Prior recovery of phosphorus as struvite in the FBR enhanced nitrogen and COD removal efficiency in MBR. Under optimum operating conditions (pH=9, HRT=6h and IAC=45/15min), PO43--P, NH4+-N and COD removal efficiencies were 92.6±4.2, 98.7±1.2 and 99.3±0.5%, respectively. Stable mixed liquor suspended solid concentration (3.0-5.0g/L); enhanced nitrification-denitrification activity (78-92%) and reduced transmembrane pressure were also achieved. Compared to soluble microbial products, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) showed strong correlation with fast membrane fouling. Among EPS components, carbohydrate rather than protein was associated with membrane fouling. Except HRT, all parameters considered (pH, IAC, SRT) showed a significant effect on removal efficiency. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd

Biodecolorization of textile azo dye using Bacillus sp. strain CH12 isolated from alkaline lake

© 2017 The Authors Textile azo dye decolorizing bacteria were isolated from alkaline Lakes Abaya and Chamo using Reactive Red 239 (RR239) dye. Through subsequent screening process, strain CH12 was selected to investigate the effects of nutrient supplement, DO, pH, temperature, dye concentration and types on decolorization. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain CH12 was identified as Bacillus sp. Decolorization efficiencies were significantly enhanced with carbon (≥98%) and organic nitrogen (∼100%) supplements. Complete decolorization was also observed under anoxic and anaerobic conditions, and at the temperature of 30 °C and the pH of 10. However, the azo dye decolorization efficiency of strain CH12 was significantly reduced when NaNO3 (1–8%) was supplemented or under aerobic culturing condition (≤6%), indicating that RR239 was less preferred electron acceptor. Overall, strain CH12 can be a promising candidate for decolorization applications due to its potential to effectively decolorize higher RR239 concentrations (50−250 mg/L) and six additional dyes

Effect of intermittent aeration cycle on nutrient removal and microbial community in a fluidized bed reactor-membrane bioreactor combo system

Effect of intermittent aeration cycle (IAC=15/45-60/60min) on nutrient removal and microbial community structure was investigated using a novel fluidized bed reactor-membrane bioreactor (FBR-MBR) combo system. FBR alone was found more efficient for removing PO4-P (>85%) than NH4-N (98%). Efficient nitrification, stable mixed liquor suspended solid and reduced transmembrane pressure was also achieved. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction results of total bacteria 16S rRNA gene copies per mL of mixed-liquor varied from (2.48±0.42)×109 initial to (2.74±0.10)×108, (6.27±0.16)×109 and (9.17±1.78)×109 for 15/45, 45/15 and 60/60min of IACs, respectively. The results of clone library analysis revealed that Proteobacteria (59%), Firmicutes (12%) and Bacteroidetes (11%) were the dominant bacterial group in all samples. Overall, the combo system performs optimum nutrient removal and host stable microbial communities at 45/15min of IAC. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd

Natural fibers have recently gained attention due to low environmental impact, biodegradability, low cost and easy availability. In this research work, water hyacinth (WH) fiber was used as reinforcement in the fabrication of the natural fiber composites. WH plant fiber reinforced high-density polyethylene (HDPE) thermoplastic composites were fabricated by compression molding process. Fabrication parameters such as water hyacinth content, alkali treatment concentration, treatment time and coupling agent amount were varied in three levels and composites specimens were fabricated according to Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array. Grey Relation Analysis (GRA) was used to optimize the fabrication parameters. The results showed that the increase in WH fiber volume fraction, NaOH concentrations and treatment time increased the tensile and flexural strength of the composite up to some point and after that, it decreased. However, the strength of the composite was found to decrease with the increase of NaOH concentration and decrease of coupling agent concentration. ANOVA analysis revealed that the water hyacinth particle content had the highest contribution to tensile and flexural strength, followed by coupling agent dosage, treatment time, and NaOH concentration in order. Mechanical properties were optimized when the WH/HDPE composite fabricated with 30% water hyacinth fiber treated with 5wt% NaOH concentration for 12 hours and mixed with 15% coupling agent. The simultaneous effects of fabrication parameters on tensile and flexural strength of the WH/HDPE composites were studied. The fabricated WH/ HDP composite can be used as a viable alternative material for making furniture, ceiling, tile and partition boards

The productivity of cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) in Ethiopia has been generally low due to several biotic and abiotic constraints among which are several viral diseases. There is a recent report indicating that this economically important vegetable is seriously affected in Ethiopia by cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) and turnip mosaic virus (TuMV). However, little information exists on the incidence and distribution of these viruses as the previous report is based on samples only from Addis Ababa. In this study, a total of 370 leaf samples were collected from 75 cabbage growing fields in Central Ethiopia in two rounds of survey. Two cabbage varieties locally known as “Habesha gomen” and “Tikur gomen” with virus-like symptoms were collected and tested with Double Antibody Sandwich Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (DAS-ELISA) using polyclonal antibodies specific to CaMV and TuMV. Results from serological diagnosis were confirmed with PCR and Sanger sequencing. The results indicated a high incidence and wide distribution of both viruses in Central Ethiopia with an average of 29.5% infection for CaMV and 40% for TuMV. Biological inoculation tests for CaMV or TuMV or both on healthy cabbage seedlings gave similar symptoms as those observed in the field. Symptom severity was higher with co-infection of CaMV and TuMV followed by TuMV single infection. BLAST analysis showed that TuMV and CaMV isolates from Ethiopia have nucleotide identity of 95–98% and 93–98%, respectively to previously reported isolates. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that CaMV isolates from Ethiopia are closely related to isolates from USA and Italy within Group II clade whereas TuMV isolates have close similarities with isolates from World B clade including isolates from Kenya, UK, Japan and the Netherlands. The identification of the causative agents of the mosaic disease observed on cabbage in Central Ethiopia may lay the foundation for future management studies.https://link.springer.com/journal/133372024-04-15hj2023Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI)Plant Production and Soil ScienceNon

PURPOSE: Unfavorable outcomes after trachomatous trichiasis (TT) surgery are undermining the global trachoma elimination effort. This analysis investigates predictors of postoperative TT (PTT), eyelid contour abnormalities (ECAs), and granuloma in the 2 most common TT surgery procedures: posterior lamellar tarsal rotation (PLTR) and bilamellar tarsal rotation (BLTR). DESIGN: Secondary data analysis from a randomized, controlled, single-masked clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1000 patients with TT, with lashes touching the eye or evidence of epilation, in association with tarsal conjunctival scarring. METHODS: Participants were randomly allocated and received BLTR (n = 501) or PLTR (n = 499) surgery. Disease severity at baseline, surgical incisions, sutures, and corrections were graded during and immediately after surgery. Participants were examined at 6 and 12 months by assessors masked to allocation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Predictors of PTT, ECA, and granuloma. RESULTS: Data were available for 992 (99.2%) trial participants (496 in each arm). There was strong evidence that performing more peripheral dissection with scissors in PLTR (odd ratio [OR], 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.54-0.91; P = 0.008) and BLTR (OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.72-0.96; P = 0.01) independently protected against PTT. Baseline major trichiasis and mixed location lashes and immediate postoperative central undercorrection independently predicted PTT in both surgical procedures. Peripheral lashes in PLTR (OR, 5.91; 95% CI, 1.48-23.5; P = 0.01) and external central incision height ≥4 mm in BLTR (OR, 2.89; 95% CI, 1.55-5.41; P = 0.001) were independently associated with PTT. Suture interval asymmetry of >2 mm (OR, 3.18; 95% CI, 1.31-7.70; P = 0.01) in PLTR and baseline conjunctival scarring in BLTR (OR, 1.72; 95% CI, 1.06-2.81; P = 0.03) were independently associated with ECA. Older age was independently associated with ECA in both PLTR (P value for trend < 0.0001) and BLTR (P value for trend = 0.03). There was substantial intersurgeon variability in ECA rates for both PLTR (range, 19.0%-36.2%) and BLTR (range, 6.1%-28.7%) procedures. In PLTR surgery, irregular posterior lamellar incision at the center of the eyelid (OR, 6.72; 95% CI, 1.55-29.04; P = 0.01) and ECA (OR, 3.08; 95% CI, 1.37-6.94; P = 0.007) resulted in granuloma formation. CONCLUSIONS: Poor postoperative outcomes in TT surgery were associated with inadequate peripheral dissection, irregular incision, asymmetric suture position and tension, inadequate correction, and lash location. Addressing these will improve TT surgical outcomes

Epilation for minor trachomatous trichiasis: four-year results of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Trachomatous trichiasis (TT) needs to be managed to reduce the risk of vision loss. The long-term impact of epilation (a common traditional practice of repeated plucking of lashes touching the eye) in preventing visual impairment and corneal opacity from TT is unknown. We conducted a randomized controlled trial of epilation versus surgery for the management of minor TT (fewer than six lashes touching the eye) in Ethiopia. Here we report the four-year outcome and the effect on vision and corneal opacity. METHODOLOGY/ PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 1300 individuals with minor TT were recruited and randomly assigned to quality trichiasis surgery or repeated epilation using high quality epilation forceps by a trained person with good near vision. Participants were examined six-monthly for two-years, and then at four-years after randomisation. At two-years all epilation arm participants were offered free surgery. At four-years 1151 (88.5%) were re-examined: 572 (88%) and 579 (89%) from epilation and surgery arms, respectively. At that time, 21.1% of the surgery arm participants had recurrent TT; 189/572 (33%) of the epilation arm had received surgery, while 383 (67%) declined surgery and had continued epilating ("epilation-only"). Among the epilation-only group, 207 (54.1%) fully controlled their TT, 166 (43.3%) had minor TT and 10 (2.6%) had major TT (>5 lashes). There were no differences between participants in the epilation-only, epilation-to-surgery and surgery arm participants in changes in visual acuity and corneal opacity between baseline and four-years. CONCLUSIONS/ SIGNIFICANCE: Most minor TT participants randomised to the epilation arm continued epilating and controlled their TT. Change in vision and corneal opacity was comparable between surgery and epilation-only participants. This suggests that good quality epilation with regular follow-up is a reasonable second-line alternative to surgery for minor TT for individuals who either decline surgery or do not have immediate access to surgical treatment

BackgroundTime management is of utmost importance in healthcare facilities since time squandered by health professionals is time not invested in patients, and this affects the quality of care given to patients. This study aimed to assess time management practice and factors affecting it among health professionals at public hospitals in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.MethodsInstitution-based cross-sectional study supplemented with a qualitative study was conducted from April 21 to May 20, 2022, among health professionals working in public hospitals in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 416 study participants. A pretested self-administered questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data, and an interviewer guide was used to collect qualitative data to complement quantitative data. Purposive sampling was used in the qualitative study, and 12 in-depth interviews were carried out till saturation was reached. The quantitative data were entered into Epi Data version 4.0 and analyzed using SPSS 25.0 whereas the qualitative data were analyzed manually using thematic analysis. To identify the associated factors, bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used. The degree of associations was interpreted using odds ratio and 95% confidence interval at <0.05 p-value.ResultsOf 416 invited participants, 410 of them participated in the study yielding a 98.5% response rate. The magnitude of time management practice among health professionals was 66.1% (95% CI: 61.5–70%). Age ranges 25–29 (AOR = 3.961, 95% CI: 1.068, 14.682) and 30–34 (AOR = 6.240, 95% CI: 1.640, 23.749), planning (AOR = 6.032, 95% CI: 3.478, 10.463), compensation and benefits packages (AOR = 1.888, 95% CI: 1.077, 3.309), responsible to work (AOR = 2.119, 95% CI: 1.192, 3.768), time waster (AOR = 1.855, 95% CI: 1.058, 3.251) and staff shortage (AOR = 0.535, 95% CI: 0.319, 0.896) were factors associated with time management practice. From the qualitative study, two major themes and five categories have emerged. Conclusion and recommendationsHealthcare facilities could improve their time management practices by providing training on planning, being a low time-waster and highly responsible at work, and designing compensation and benefits packages
