    Effect of low intensity pulsed ultrasound on repairing the periodontal bone of Beagle canines

    AbstractObjectiveTo investigate the repairing effect of low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on the Beagle canines periodontal bone defect.MethodsA total of 12 Beagle dogs with periodontal bone defect model were randomly divided into control group, LIPUS group, guided tissue regeneration (GTR) group and LIPUS+GTR group, with three in each. After completion of the models, no other proceeding was performed in control group; LIPUS group adopt direct exposure to radiation line LIPUS processing 1 week after modeling; GTR group adopted treatment with GTR, following the CTR standard operation reference; LIPUS+GTR group was treated with LIPUS joint GTR. Temperature change before treatment and histopathological change of periodontal tissue after repair was observed.ResultsThere was no significant difference in temperature changes of periodontal tissue between groups (P>0.05). The amount and maturity of LIPUS+GTR group were superior to other groups; new cementum, dental periodontal bones of GTR group were superior to the control group but less than LIPUS group; new collagen and maturity of the control group is not high relatively.ConclusionsLIPUS can accelerate the calcium salt deposition and new bone maturation, thus it can serve as promoting periodontal tissue repair, and shortening the periodontal tissue repair time

    Effects of different nutrient solutions on the acclimatisation of in vitro Caladium plantlets using a simplified hydroponic system

    An efficient acclimatisation protocol is critical to improve the survival rate and promote growth of in vitro plantlets. Herein, tissue-cultured plantlets of ‘Red Flash’ caladium (Caladium × hortulanum Birdsey) were treated with deionised water and three nutrient solutions including Japanese garden formula (JG), South China Agriculture University formula B for leafy vegetables (SCAU-B) and Hoagland solution in a simplified hydroponic system under indoor environmental conditions. The results showed that all the plantlets survived after 30 days of hydroponic culture, and the three nutrient solutions showed significant positive effects on the plant growth and the content of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, carotenoid, soluble sugar and soluble protein compared to the deionised water treatment. No significant difference was recorded for the other growth parameters except the average leaf number per plantlet among the nutrient solution treatments. For the analysed physiological parameters, the plantlets treated by SCAU-B contained significantly higher content than those of the Hoagland treatment except the protein content. No significant difference was found between the JG and the SCAU-B treatment except the carotenoid content, and between the JG and the Hoagland treatment except the protein content. The plantlets acclimatised in the nutrient solutions also had a good performance when transferred to plastic pots. These results implied that water alone was not capable of maintaining healthy growth of in vitro caladium plantlets, and hydroponics approach using the three nutrient solutions could be a feasible method for acclimatisation of the plantlets

    The universal "heartbeat" oscillations in black hole systems accross the mass-scale

    The hyperluminous X-ray source (HLX-1, the peak X-ray luminosity 1042erg s1\sim 10^{42}\rm erg\ s^{-1}) near the spiral galaxy ESO 243-49 is possibly the best candidate for intermediate mass black hole (IMBH), which underwent recurrent outbursts with a period of 400\sim 400 days. The physical reason for this quasi-periodic variability is still unclear. We explore the possibility of radiation-pressure instability in accretion disk by modeling the light curve of HLX-1, and find that it can roughly reproduce the duration, period and amplitude of the recurrent outbursts HLX-1 with an IMBH of ~10^5Msun. Our result provides a possible mechanism to explain the recurrent outbursts in HLX-1. We further find a universal correlation between the outburst duration and the bolometric luminosity for the BH sources with a very broad mass range (e.g., X-ray binaries, XRBs, HLX-1 and active galactic nuclei, AGNs), which is roughly consistent with the prediction of radiation-pressure instability of the accretion disk. These results imply that "heartbeat" oscillations triggered by radiation-pressure instability may appears in different-scale BH systems.Comment: ApJ in press; 15 pages, 5 Figure
