Algunas consideraciones sobre la transición a la agricultura sustentable en el occidente de México
This article focus on the transition processes towards sustainable agriculture amongst farmers in western Mexico. Obstacles and motivations were studied in order to evaluate practices related to sustainable agriculture as a viable alternative for the current crisis in the Mexican countryside.We consider that the results contribute to the discussion on sustainable agriculture and its viability in the current neo-liberal context of Mexico. At the one hand, results indicate the importance of permanent land access, assuring a better stewardship of the soil at the long term and autonomy in decision-making on agricultural practices. On the other hand, the economic cost-benefit analysis that every producer makes represents a decisive factor for adopting sustainable agricultural practices. Although sustainable agriculture is cheaper at the short term, at the medium term farmers in transition, due to the temporal lower productivity, obtain more limited financial resources. However, those farmers with a more long-term view regarding farming incline themselves towards sustainable agriculture, considering soil degradation and fertility and the multifunctional services of agriculture.Este artículo reflexiona en torno al proceso de adopción de la agricultura sustentable en productores del Occidente de México. Se exploran los obstáculos y motivaciones que tuvieron, dando cuenta con ello de en qué medida representa la agricultura sustentable una alternativa real para los productores ante la crisis actual del campo mexicano.Consideramos que los resultados aportan a la discusión sobre la agricultura sustentable y su viabilidad en el actual contexto neoliberal; por una parte vemos que resulta importante que los productores sean propietarios de las tierras que trabajan, ya que eso incentiva su preocupación por el cuidado del suelo a largo plazo y les permite cierta autonomía en la toma de decisiones respecto a la manera en que quieren hacer agricultura. Por otro lado, la percepción y balance que hace cada productor respecto del costo/beneficio económico a corto, mediano y largo plazo representa un aspecto decisivo para la adopción de la agricultura sustentable pura o mixta; si bien la producción con técnicas orgánicas representa poca o casi nula inversión a corto plazo, a mediano plazo les representa un costo al no poder responder a la demanda del mercado en sus términos de productividad, sin embargo en los casos en que consideran la visión a largo plazo, el balance se inclina de nuevo a la agricultura sustentable al considerar el costo por el deterioro del suelo, la pérdida de fertilidad de la tierra y los servicios multifuncionales de la agricultura
Agglomerated novel spray-dried lactose-leucine tailored as a carrier to enhance the aerosolization performance of salbutamol sulfate from DPI formulations
Spray-drying allows to modify the physicochemical/mechanical properties of particles along with their morphology. In the present study, L-leucine with varying concentrations (0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, and 10% w/v) were incorporated into lactose monohydrate solution for spray-drying to enhance the aerosolization performance of dry powder inhalers containing spray-dried lactose-leucine and salbutamol sulfate. The prepared spray-dried lactose-leucine carriers were analyzed using laser diffraction (particle size), differential scanning calorimetry (thermal behavior), scanning electron microscopy (morphology), powder X-ray diffraction (crystallinity), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (interaction at molecular level), and in vitro aerosolization performance (deposition). The results showed that the efficacy of salbutamol sulfate’s aerosolization performance was, in part, due to the introduction of L-leucine in the carrier, prior to being spray-dried, accounting for an increase in the fine particle fraction (FPF) of salbutamol sulfate from spray-dried lactose-leucine (0.5% leucine) in comparison to all other carriers. It was shown that all of the spray-dried carriers were spherical in their morphology with some agglomerates and contained a mixture of amorphous, α-lactose, and β-lactose. It was also interesting to note that spray-dried lactose-leucine particles were agglomerated during the spray-drying process to make coarse particles (volume mean diameter of 79 to 87 μm) suitable as a carrier in DPI formulations
Home enteral nutrition in children—2010 nationwide survey of the polish society for clinical nutrition of children
Published epidemiologic data on the administration rates of enteral/parenteral home nutrition is very limited. The aim of this first nationwide study was to assess the availability of pediatric home enteral nutrition (HEN) services in Poland. The questionnaire was sent to all regional centers providing pediatric HEN services in Poland (n = 14). The analysis included the number of pediatric patients who received HEN in 2010, their demographic characteristics and geographical distribution. Furthermore, the distributions of indications and methods of enteral nutrition administration were analyzed, along with the reasons of withdrawal from the HEN program. The number and fraction of children receiving HEN increased in 2010, from 433 (11.34 per 1 million inhabitants) on January 1st to 525 (13.75) on December 31st. Marked differences were observed in geographical distribution of this parameter, from zero to up to 30 pediatric patients per 1 million inhabitants. Median age of patients was 6 years (range: 9 months–18 years). In most cases, HEN was prescribed due to neurological disorders (n = 337, 64.2%), and administered by means of gastrostomy (n = 450, 85.71%). This study revealed the dynamic development of pediatric HEN services in Poland but also documented their potential regional shortages
Predicting Crystallization of Amorphous Drugs with Terahertz Spectroscopy.
There is a controversy about the extent to which the primary and secondary dielectric relaxations influence the crystallization of amorphous organic compounds below the glass transition temperature. Recent studies also point to the importance of fast molecular dynamics on picosecond-to-nanosecond time scales with respect to the glass stability. In the present study we provide terahertz spectroscopy evidence on the crystallization of amorphous naproxen well below its glass transition temperature and confirm the direct role of Johari-Goldstein (JG) secondary relaxation as a facilitator of the crystallization. We determine the onset temperature Tβ above which the JG relaxation contributes to the fast molecular dynamics and analytically quantify the level of this contribution. We then show there is a strong correlation between the increase in the fast molecular dynamics and onset of crystallization in several chosen amorphous drugs. Molecular origin of enhanced proton conductivity in anhydrous ionic systems
YesIonic systems with enhanced proton conductivity are widely viewed as promising electrolytes in fuel cells and batteries. Nevertheless, a major challenge toward their commercial applications is determination of the factors controlling the fast proton hopping in anhydrous conditions. To address this issue, we have studied novel proton-conducting materials formed via a chemical reaction of lidocaine base with a series of acids characterized by a various number of proton-active sites. From ambient and high pressure experimental data, we have found that there are fundamental differences in the conducting properties of the examined salts. On the other hand, DFT calculations revealed that the internal proton hopping within the cation structure strongly affects the pathways of mobility of the charge carrier. These findings offer a fresh look on the Grotthuss-type mechanism in protic ionic glasses as well as provide new ideas for the design of anhydrous materials with exceptionally high proton conductivity
Distant homologs of anti-apoptotic factor HAX1 encode parvalbumin-like calcium binding proteins
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Apoptosis is a highly ordered and orchestrated multiphase process controlled by the numerous cellular and extra-cellular signals, which executes the programmed cell death <it>via </it>release of cytochrome c alterations in calcium signaling, caspase-dependent limited proteolysis and DNA fragmentation. Besides the general modifiers of apoptosis, several tissue-specific regulators of this process were identified including HAX1 (HS-1 associated protein X-1) - an anti-apoptotic factor active in myeloid cells. Although HAX1 was the subject of various experimental studies, the mechanisms of its action and a functional link connected with the regulation of apoptosis still remains highly speculative.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Here we provide the data which suggests that HAX1 may act as a regulator or as a sensor of calcium. On the basis of iterative similarity searches, we identified a set of distant homologs of HAX1 in insects. The applied fold recognition protocol gives us strong evidence that the distant insects' homologs of HAX1 are novel parvalbumin-like calcium binding proteins. Although the whole three EF-hands fold is not preserved in vertebrate our analysis suggests that there is an existence of a potential single EF-hand calcium binding site in HAX1. The molecular mechanism of its action remains to be identified, but the risen hypothesis easily translates into previously reported lines of various data on the HAX1 biology as well as, provides us a direct link to the regulation of apoptosis. Moreover, we also report that other family of myeloid specific apoptosis regulators - myeloid leukemia factors (MLF1, MLF2) share the homologous C-terminal domain and taxonomic distribution with HAX1.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Performed structural and active sites analyses gave new insights into mechanisms of HAX1 and MLF families in apoptosis process and suggested possible role of HAX1 in calcium-binding, still the analyses require further experimental verification.</p
Theoretical Model for Cellular Shapes Driven by Protrusive and Adhesive Forces
The forces that arise from the actin cytoskeleton play a crucial role in determining the cell shape. These include protrusive forces due to actin polymerization and adhesion to the external matrix. We present here a theoretical model for the cellular shapes resulting from the feedback between the membrane shape and the forces acting on the membrane, mediated by curvature-sensitive membrane complexes of a convex shape. In previous theoretical studies we have investigated the regimes of linear instability where spontaneous formation of cellular protrusions is initiated. Here we calculate the evolution of a two dimensional cell contour beyond the linear regime and determine the final steady-state shapes arising within the model. We find that shapes driven by adhesion or by actin polymerization (lamellipodia) have very different morphologies, as observed in cells. Furthermore, we find that as the strength of the protrusive forces diminish, the system approaches a stabilization of a periodic pattern of protrusions. This result can provide an explanation for a number of puzzling experimental observations regarding cellular shape dependence on the properties of the extra-cellular matrix
