Dix ans de recherches sur les origines du célibat ecclésiastique. Réflexion sur les publications des années 1970-1979
This article is an examination of the reaction following the author's book Les origines du célibat ecclésiastique (Gembloux, 1970), as wellas ofthestudies on the same subject published since then. This examination leads to further précision concerning two important points. On the one hand, the authenticity, the dating and the interprétation of the canons of the Council of Elvira and the self-purported Tome of Damasus confirm that the law of continence or of celibacy originated in Rome at the end of the fourth century and that it spreadfrom there to ail of the Occident. On the other hand, the original motivation ofthe law of celibacy consists clearly in the incompatibility between the sacramental action and conjugal commerce, whatever may be said about other spiritual or apostolic motivations later given for this law.Gryson Roger.
