Summaries This article draws upon the psychiatric, psycho?analytic and anthropological literature to show that we know very little about the psychological consequences of war and upheaval in the non?Western world. The small amount we do know suggests that while suffering is often intense, many of the therapeutic responses on offer are inappropriate as they are informed by psychiatric and psycho?analytic thought and practice which have little relevance to the majority of people living in the non?Western world

L’interprétation des rêves fut publiée il y a cent ans, au tournant du xixe au xxe siècle. L’auteur saisit l’occasion de cet anniversaire pour explorer la manière dont Freud a traité son livre destiné à marquer le siècle. L’histoire des révisions auxquelles Freud a procédé au fil des rééditions parues de son vivant, reconstituée pour la première fois, est placée au cœur de la présente étude. Cette histoire des révisions se révèle une suite extrêmement contrastée de mouvements contradictoires, consistant, de la part de Freud, d’abord à garder au plus près de lui-même son opus magnum, c’est-à-dire à affirmer hautement son origine subjective et auto-analytique, puis à le replacer à distance de lui-même, en y introduisant les contributions de ses collaborateurs afin sans doute de lui donner plus d’objectivité, ce qui conféra un certain temps à L’interprétation des rêves le caractère d’une œuvre collective.Die Traumdeutung erschien vor hundert Jahren an der Schwelle vom 19. zum 20. On the occasion of this anniversary, the author explores how Freud handled the book that was destined to mark the century. At the center of this article is the history of the revisions which Freud made over the course of the re-editions which were published during his lifetime, reconstituted for the first time. The history of these revisions reveals a series of extreme contrasts and contradictory movements, consisting, on Freud’s part, in first holding his opus magnum as closely to himself as possible, thereby strongly affirming its subjective and autoanalytic origins,and then in distancing himself from it by introducing the contributions of his collaborators in order, undoubtedly, to give it more objectivity.
