Requirement of plakophilin 2 for heart morphogenesis and cardiac junction formation
Plakophilins are proteins of the armadillo family that function in embryonic development and in the adult, and when mutated can cause disease. We have ablated the plakophilin 2 gene in mice. The resulting mutant mice exhibit lethal alterations in heart morphogenesis and stability at mid-gestation (E10.5âE11), characterized by reduced trabeculation, disarrayed cytoskeleton, ruptures of cardiac walls, and blood leakage into the pericardiac cavity. In the absence of plakophilin 2, the cytoskeletal linker protein desmoplakin dissociates from the plaques of the adhering junctions that connect the cardiomyocytes and forms granular aggregates in the cytoplasm. By contrast, embryonic epithelia show normal junctions. Thus, we conclude that plakophilin 2 is important for the assembly of junctional proteins and represents an essential morphogenic factor and architectural component of the heart
Increased Sensitivity to Possible Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion
A new experimental search for muonium-antimuonium conversion was conducted at
the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland. The preliminary analysis
yielded one event fulfilling all required criteria at an expected background of
1.7(2) events due to accidental coincidences. An upper limit for the conversion
probability in 0.1 T magnetic field is extracted as (90%
CL).Comment: 2 figure
Measurement of the Negative Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment to 0.7 ppm
The anomalous magnetic moment of the negative muon has been measured to a
precision of 0.7 parts per million (ppm) at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient
Synchrotron. This result is based on data collected in 2001, and is over an
order of magnitude more precise than the previous measurement of the negative
muon. The result a_mu= 11 659 214(8)(3) \times 10^{-10} (0.7 ppm), where the
first uncertainty is statistical and the second is sytematic, is consistend
with previous measurements of the anomaly for the positive and negative muon.
The average for the muon anomaly a_{mu}(exp) = 11 659 208(6) \times 10^{-10}
(0.5ppm).Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters, revised to

Generation of two induced pluripotent stem cell lines and the corresponding isogenic controls from Parkinsonâs disease patients carrying the heterozygous mutations c.815G>A (p.R272Q) or c.1348C>T (p.R450C) in the RHOT1 gene encoding Miro1
Fibroblasts from two Parkinsonâs disease (PD) patients carrying either the heterozygous mutation c.815G>A (Miro1 p.R272Q) or c.1348C>T (Miro1 p.R450C) in the RHOT1 gene, were converted into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) using RNA-based and episomal reprogramming, respectively. The corresponding isogenic gene-corrected lines have been generated using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. These two isogenic pairs will be used to study Miro1-related molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration in relevant iPSC-derived neuronal models (e.g., midbrain dopaminergic neurons and astrocytes)
The strengths and limitations of routine staging before treatment with abdominal CT in colorectal cancer

Abstract

Background

Advanced colorectal cancer (CRC), either locally advanced, metastasized (mCRC) or both, is present in a relevant proportion of patients. The chances on curation of advanced CRC are continuously improving with modern multi-modality treatment options. For incurable CRC the focus lies on palliation of symptoms, which is not necessarily a resection of the primary tumor. Both situations motivate adequate staging before treatment in CRC. This prospective observational study evaluates the outcomes after the introduction of routine staging with abdominal CT before treatment.

Methods

In a prospective observational study of 612 consecutive patients (2007-2009), the ability of abdominal CT to find liver metastases (LM), peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) and T4 stage in colon cancer (CC) was analysed.

Results

Advanced CRC was present in 58% of patients, mCRC in 31%. The ability to find LM was excellent (99%), cT4 stage CC good (86%) and PC poor (33%). In the group of surgical patients with emergency presentations, the incidences of both mCRC (51%) and locally advanced colon cancer (LACC) (69%) were higher than in the elective group (20% and 26% respectively). Staging tended to be omitted more often in the emergency group (35% versus 12% in elective surgery).

Conclusions

The strengths of staging with abdominal CT are to find LM and LACC, however it fails in diagnosing PC. On grounds of the incidence of advanced CRC, staging is warranted in patients with emergency presentations as well.</p
The Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment and the Standard Model
The muon anomalous magnetic moment measurement, when compared with theory,
can be used to test many extensions to the standard model. The most recent
measurement made by the Brookhaven E821 Collaboration reduces the uncertainty
on the world average of a_mu to 0.7 ppm, comparable in precision to theory.
This paper describes the experiment and the current theoretical efforts to
establish a correct standard model reference value for the muon anomaly.Comment: Plenary Talk; PANIC'02 XVI Particles and Nuclear International

Search for Lorentz and CPT Violation Effects in Muon Spin Precession
The spin precession frequency of muons stored in the storage ring has
been analyzed for evidence of Lorentz and CPT violation. Two Lorentz and CPT
violation signatures were searched for: a nonzero
(=); and a sidereal variation of
. No significant effect is found, and the following
limits on the standard-model extension parameters are obtained: GeV; GeV; and the 95% confidence level limits
GeV and
GeV.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters, Modified to
