    Ultrafast quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in normal metals and heavy fermion materials

    We present a detailed theoretical study of the ultrafast quasiparticle relaxation dynamics observed in normal metals and heavy fermion materials with femtosecond time-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy. For normal metals, a nonthermal electron distribution gives rise to a temperature (T) independent electron-phonon relaxation time at low temperatures, in contrast to the T^{-3}-divergent behavior predicted by the two-temperature model. For heavy fermion compounds, we find that the blocking of electron-phonon scattering for heavy electrons within the density-of-states peak near the Fermi energy is crucial to explain the rapid increase of the electron-phonon relaxation time below the Kondo temperature. We propose the hypothesis that the slower Fermi velocity compared to the sound velocity provides a natural blocking mechanism due to energy and momentum conservation laws.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure

    Size-Dependent Surface Plasmon Dynamics in Metal Nanoparticles

    We study the effect of Coulomb correlations on the ultrafast optical dynamics of small metal particles. We demonstrate that a surface-induced dynamical screening of the electron-electron interactions leads to quasiparticle scattering with collective surface excitations. In noble-metal nanoparticles, it results in an interband resonant scattering of d-holes with surface plasmons. We show that this size-dependent many-body effect manifests itself in the differential absorption dynamics for frequencies close to the surface plasmon resonance. In particular, our self-consistent calculations reveal a strong frequency dependence of the relaxation, in agreement with recent femtosecond pump-probe experiments.Comment: 8 pages + 4 figures, final version accepted to PR

    Nonequilibrium Electron Interactions in Metal Films

    Ultrafast relaxation dynamics of an athermal electron distribution is investigated in silver films using a femtosecond pump-probe technique with 18 fs pulses in off-resonant conditions. The results yield evidence for an increase with time of the electron-gas energy loss rate to the lattice and of the free electron damping during the early stages of the electron-gas thermalization. These effects are attributed to transient alterations of the electron average scattering processes due to the athermal nature of the electron gas, in agreement with numerical simulations

    Ultrafast dynamics of coherent optical phonons and nonequilibrium electrons in transition metals

    The femtosecond optical pump-probe technique was used to study dynamics of photoexcited electrons and coherent optical phonons in transition metals Zn and Cd as a function of temperature and excitation level. The optical response in time domain is well fitted by linear combination of a damped harmonic oscillation because of excitation of coherent E2gE_{2g} phonon and a subpicosecond transient response due to electron-phonon thermalization. The electron-phonon thermalization time monotonically increases with temperature, consistent with the thermomodulation scenario, where at high temperatures the system can be well explained by the two-temperature model, while below ≈\approx 50 K the nonthermal electron model needs to be applied. As the lattice temperature increases, the damping of the coherent E2gE_{2g} phonon increases, while the amplitudes of both fast electronic response and the coherent E2gE_{2g} phonon decrease. The temperature dependence of the damping of the E2gE_{2g} phonon indicates that population decay of the coherent optical phonon due to anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling dominates the decay process. We present a model that accounts for the observed temperature dependence of the amplitude assuming the photoinduced absorption mechanism, where the signal amplitude is proportional to the photoinduced change in the quasiparticle density. The result that the amplitude of the E2gE_{2g} phonon follows the temperature dependence of the amplitude of the fast electronic transient indicates that under the resonant condition both electronic and phononic responses are proportional to the change in the dielectric function.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, to appear in Physical Review

    Ninth and Tenth Order Virial Coefficients for Hard Spheres in D Dimensions

    We evaluate the virial coefficients B_k for k<=10 for hard spheres in dimensions D=2,...,8. Virial coefficients with k even are found to be negative when D>=5. This provides strong evidence that the leading singularity for the virial series lies away from the positive real axis when D>=5. Further analysis provides evidence that negative virial coefficients will be seen for some k>10 for D=4, and there is a distinct possibility that negative virial coefficients will also eventually occur for D=3.Comment: 33 pages, 12 figure

    Sex Hormone Binding Globulin Deficiency Due to a Homozygous Missense Mutation

    Context: SHBG is known as the major sex steroid binding protein in plasma, and it regulates the bioavailability of both T and estradiol levels required for effects on target tissues. We identified a man with an undetectable SHBG concentration in combination with low total T. He presented with a 7-year history of muscle weakness, fatigue, and a low libido. Objectives: To determine the cause of the SHBG deficiency, we employed both genetic analysis of the SHBG gene and transgene SHBG expression. Results: Genetic analysis identified a novel homozygous missense mutation that was predicted to be deleterious for protein function. Transgene expression showed that the mutation resulted in a block in SHBG secretion accompanied by increased expression of the endoplasmic reticulum molecular chaperone HSPA5. The mutation results in accumulation of the mutant SHBG within the cell and failure to secrete the mutant protein. Screening of family members identified one sister who was also deficient for SHBG. Conclusions: We have identified a family with a missense mutation within the SHBG gene, which results in a complete deficiency of plasma SHBG in the homozygous state. Although total T level was low in the male patient, it did not interfere with normal gonadal development and spermatogenesis, suggesting a limited role of SHBG in sexual maturation and male physiology

    Clinical Applicability of Transient Elastography for Estimating Liver Stiffness in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

    Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which can lead to liver fibrosis and ultimately to cirrhosis. Transient elastography (TE), by using the FibroScan, and is a non-invasive ultrasonography method to measure liver elasticity. TE has been related with the degree of liver fibrosis. Objective: To investigate the applicability of TE in daily clinical practice among T2DM patients. Method: In a non-academic teaching hospital, T2DM patients without a history of liver disease the degree of liver stiffness was measured using TE. Successful measurements were defined as 10 validated measurements per patient and an interquartile range (IQR) to median ratio of ≤30%. Results: In 90 of 126 patients (71%) valid measurements were be obtained. Among the patients with invalid measurements, 33 had &lt; 10 valid measurements and 3 had a IQR to median ratio of &lt;30%. The percentage of invalid measurements was 12% in patients with a BMI &lt;30 kg/m2 and 39% in patients with a BMI ≥30 kg/m2. Among the 90 patients with valid liver stiffness measurements, the median liver stiffness was 6.7 [4.6-8.5] kPa with a IQR of measurements of 1.1 [0.6-1.8] kPa and IQR to median ratio of 17 (13-23)%. Conclusion: The success rate of TE measurements using the FibroScan in patients with T2DM was 71%, with a lower success rate in patients with a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2. This diagnostic modality needs further investigation being introduced as a marker of fibrosis in daily diabetes practice

    The repulsive lattice gas, the independent-set polynomial, and the Lov\'asz local lemma

    We elucidate the close connection between the repulsive lattice gas in equilibrium statistical mechanics and the Lovasz local lemma in probabilistic combinatorics. We show that the conclusion of the Lovasz local lemma holds for dependency graph G and probabilities {p_x} if and only if the independent-set polynomial for G is nonvanishing in the polydisc of radii {p_x}. Furthermore, we show that the usual proof of the Lovasz local lemma -- which provides a sufficient condition for this to occur -- corresponds to a simple inductive argument for the nonvanishing of the independent-set polynomial in a polydisc, which was discovered implicitly by Shearer and explicitly by Dobrushin. We also present some refinements and extensions of both arguments, including a generalization of the Lovasz local lemma that allows for "soft" dependencies. In addition, we prove some general properties of the partition function of a repulsive lattice gas, most of which are consequences of the alternating-sign property for the Mayer coefficients.     Short and long term effects of a lifestyle intervention for construction workers at risk for cardiovascular disease: a randomized controlled trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The prevalence of overweight and elevated cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among workers in the construction industry is relatively high. Improving lifestyle lowers CVD risk and may have work-related benefits. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects on physical activity (PA), diet, and smoking of a lifestyle intervention consisting of individual counseling among male workers in the construction industry with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In a randomized controlled trial including 816 male blue- and white-collar workers in the construction industry with an elevated risk of CVD, usual care was compared to a 6-month lifestyle intervention. The intervention consisted of individual counseling using motivational interviewing techniques, and was delivered by an occupational physician or occupational nurse. In three face to face and four telephone contacts, the participant's risk profile, personal determinants, and barriers for behavior change were discussed, and personal goals were set. Participants chose to aim at either diet and PA, or smoking. Data were collected at baseline and after six and 12 months, by means of a questionnaire. To analyse the data, linear and logistic regression analyses were performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The intervention had a statistically significant beneficial effect on snack intake (β-1.9, 95%CI -3.7; -0.02) and fruit intake (β 1.7, 95%CI 0.6; 2.9) at 6 months. The effect on snack intake was sustained until 12 months; 6 months after the intervention had ended (β -1.9, 95%CI -3.6; -0.2). The intervention effects on leisure time PA and metabolic equivalent-minutes were not statistically significant. The beneficial effect on smoking was statistically significant at 6 (OR smoking 0.3, 95%CI 0.1;0.7), but not at 12 months (OR 0.8, 95%CI 0.4; 1.6).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Beneficial effects on smoking, fruit, and snack intake can be achieved by an individual-based lifestyle intervention among male construction workers with an elevated risk of CVD. Future research should be done on strategies to improve leisure time PA and on determinants of maintenance of changed behavior. Considering the rising prevalence of unhealthy lifestyle and CVD, especially in the aging population, implementation of this intervention in the occupational health care setting is recommended.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>Current Controlled Trials <a href="http://www.controlled-trials.com/ISRCTN60545588">ISRCTN60545588</a></p
