We examine the “home bias” of international knowledge spillovers as measured by the speed of patent citations (i.e. knowledge spreads slowly over international boundaries). We present the first compelling econometric evidence that the geographical localization of knowledge spillovers has fallen over time, as we would expect from the dramatic fall in communication and travel costs. Our proposed estimator controls for correlated fixed effects and censoring in duration models and we apply it to data on over two million citations between 1975 and 1999. Home bias declines substantially when we control for fixed effects: there is practically no home bias for the more “modern” sectors such as pharmaceuticals and information/communication technologies

Our proposed estimator controls for correlated fixed effects and censoring in duration models and we apply it to data on over two million patent citations between 1975 and 1999. Home bias is exaggerated in models that do not control for fixed effects. The fall in home bias over time is weaker for the pharmaceuticals and information/communication technology sectors where agglomeration externalities may remain strong.
Field-theory calculation of the electric dipole moment of the neutron and paramagnetic atoms
Electric dipole moments (edms) of bound states that arise from the
constituents having edms are studied with field-theoretic techniques. The
systems treated are the neutron and a set of paramagnetic atoms. In the latter
case it is well known that the atomic edm differs greatly from the electron edm
when the internal electric fields of the atom are taken into account. In the
nonrelativistic limit these fields lead to a complete suppression, but for
heavy atoms large enhancement factors are present. A general bound-state field
theory approach applicable to both the neutron and paramagnetic atoms is set
up. It is applied first to the neutron, treating the quarks as moving freely in
a confining spherical well. It is shown that the effect of internal electric
fields is small in this case. The atomic problem is then revisited using
field-theory techniques in place of the usual Hamiltonian methods, and the
atomic enhancement factor is shown to be consistent with previous calculations.
Possible application of bound-state techniques to other sources of the neutron

Recombinant innovation and the boundaries of the firm
There is considerable interest in understanding how important market frictions are in stifling the transmission of ideas from one firm to another. Although the theoretical literature emphasizes the importance of these frictions, direct empirical evidence on them is limited. We use comprehensive patent data from the European Patent Office and a multiple spells duration model to provide estimates that suggest that they are substantial. It is around 30% more costly to successfully discover and utilize new ideas created in another firm than in your own. This compares to the increased costs of accessing new ideas across national borders of around 5%, and across technologies of around 20%. These result point towards substantial imperfections in the market for technology
The danger within: the role of genetic, behavioural and ecological factors in population persistence of colour polymorphic species
Polymorphic species have been the focus of important work in evolutionary biology. It has been suggested that colour polymorphic species have specific evolutionary and population dynamics that enable them to persist through environmental changes better than less variable species. We suggest that recent empirical and theoretical work indicates that polymorphic species may be more vulnerable to extinction than previously thought. This vulnerability arises because these species often have a number of correlated sexual, behavioural, life history and ecological traits, which can have a simple genetic underpinning. When exacerbated by environmental change, these alternate strategies can lead to conflict between morphs at the genomic and population levels, which can directly or indirectly affect population and evolutionary dynamics. In this perspective, we identify a number of ways in which the nature of the correlated traits, their underpinning genetic architecture, and the inevitable interactions between colour morphs can result in a reduction in population fitness. The principles illustrated here apply to all kinds of discrete polymorphism (e.g. behavioural syndromes), but we focus primarily on colour polymorphism because they are well studied. We urge further empirical investigation of the genetic architecture and interactions in polymorphic species to elucidate the impact on population fitness
