Let\u27s be Blunt: Substance Use Among Black Male Student-Athletes

Extensive research has been conducted on substance use within college athletics. However, a gap in the literature exists that does not specifically explore substance use among Black male student-athletes. This qualitative study seeks to answer the following research questions: (a) What do Black male student-athletes identify as reasons for engaging in substance use? (b) Do Black male student-athletes see substance use as a problem? If so, what supports would they envision needing to change their behavior? (c) Is there a perceived and/or experienced relationship between substance use and exploitation of Black male student-athletes? Ten Division I current and former Black male student-athletes were individually interviewed. Participants revealed the concept of athlete-student, marijuana use, lack of emotional and mental support, and the Black male student-athlete experience’s role in substance use

STEAM Interventions with Non-Identified Gifted and Talented Students

Some elementary school classrooms are divided by students who are identified as gifted and talented (GT) and students who are not identified as GT, leading to lower self-perceptions of those who are not GT students. The purpose of this study was to implement engaging STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities with the non-GT students to see what would happen, specifically looking for changes in self-perceptions and attitudes about school. This study took place in a fourth-grade GT clustered classroom. The researcher administered pre- and post-attitude surveys, interviewed students, and observed the students during the STEAM intervention. The collected data was analyzed using the constant comparative method, and the researcher looked for major themes that emerged from the data. Four major themes emerged from the data: the influence of the GT clustered classroom on non-identified GT students, student perceptions, STEAM and positive learning experiences, and STEAM and student growth

French Migration to South Australia (1955-1971): What Alien Registration documents can tell us

The present article investigates the demographic characteristics of French migrants to South Australia in the 1950s and 1960s. These two decades are of particular interest because during this period French migration to Australia was strongly influenced by the implementation of a series of assisted passage schemes. As a result, the number of settler arrivals to Australia reached unprecedented heights during this period. This study, based on original data collected at the National Archives of Australia, provides an opportunity to identify migratory and settlement trends and measure the scope of assisted migration. In order to establish the historical context of the present investigation, the paper gives an overview of the composition and development of the French community in Australia from the days of settlement to the 1970s

Charting a Pathway Forward: Redesigning and Realigning Supports and Services for Maine\u27s Older Adults

The current growth of the population age 65 and older is one of the most significant demographic trends in the history of this country and is especially significant for Maine, where the number of people age 65 and older is growing even faster than the rest of the nation. By 2025, over a quarter of Maine’s population is expected to be age 65 and older. Because the cost of long term paid support is out of reach for many Mainers, public financing—particularly Medicaid financing—is an essential tool for addressing the long term support needs of older adults. But Medicaid is only one tool, not enough to get the job done. As Maine prepares itself for increasing demand on public resources, it needs to use those resources as cost-effectively as possible by finding new ways to use Medicaid, leveraging and supporting the power of community, and fostering cost-effective innovations to make living at home—the preferred option for most people—a reality whenever possible. This report provides a snapshot of Maine’s older adults, the primary service options in place now, and the key policy levers available for ensuring that public resources are put to their optimal use to make sure that, as we age, we are able to live healthy, active, secure and engaged lives no matter the type of support we might need

2010 Killarney Business Survey

The DIT-ACHIEV Model for the Sustainable Management of Tourism has been developed by the School of Hospitality Management and Tourism, Technological University Dublin and is endorsed by the Environmental Protection Agency and Fáilte Ireland. It explores six areas of investigation - Administration, Community, Heritage, Infrastructure, Enterprise and Visitor. The purpose of piloting this DIT- ACHIEV model in Killarney is to test its use with the objective to refine and adjust its methodology, so that it can be applied in any Irish tourism destination. Early indications are that The Model will provide the Irish tourism Industry with a valuable tool for making its product and management far more sustainable. In addition to data such as environmental measurements, information on water, waste, energy, transport, examination of local cultural, environmental and employment statistics, the model requires the undertaking of three dedicated surveys: A Resident Survey A Business Survey A Visitor Survey With the support of local volunteers and students, a year-long Visitor Survey has taken place throughout Killarney. A survey of residents was undertaken at the outset of the year and this Business Survey was run during the latter part of the summer months. 250 businesses in Killarney Town and Valley were invited to participate and this publication presents the views of the 157 who completed the survey on-line and face-to-face. In almost all instances the respondents were owners / managers, and most respondents answered all of the questions. Thus, this report provides a good overall representation of the Killarney business community
