    Thermal noise in half infinite mirrors with non-uniform loss: a slab of excess loss in a half infinite mirror

    We calculate the thermal noise in half-infinite mirrors containing a layer of arbitrary thickness and depth made of excessively lossy material but with the same elastic material properties as the substrate. For the special case of a thin lossy layer on the surface of the mirror, the excess noise scales as the ratio of the coating loss to the substrate loss and as the ratio of the coating thickness to the laser beam spot size. Assuming a silica substrate with a loss function of 3x10-8 the coating loss must be less than 3x10-5 for a 6 cm spot size and a 7 micrometers thick coating to avoid increasing the spectral density of displacement noise by more than 10%.     Evaluating Similarity Metrics for Latent Twitter Topics

    Topic modelling approaches such as LDA, when applied on a tweet corpus, can often generate a topic model containing redundant topics. To evaluate the quality of a topic model in terms of redundancy, topic similarity metrics can be applied to estimate the similarity among topics in a topic model. There are various topic similarity metrics in the literature, e.g. the Jensen Shannon (JS) divergence-based metric. In this paper, we evaluate the performances of four distance/divergence-based topic similarity metrics and examine how they align with human judgements, including a newly proposed similarity metric that is based on computing word semantic similarity using word embeddings (WE). To obtain human judgements, we conduct a user study through crowdsourcing. Among various insights, our study shows that in general the cosine similarity (CS) and WE-based metrics perform better and appear to be complementary. However, we also find that the human assessors cannot easily distinguish between the distance/divergence-based and the semantic similarity-based metrics when identifying similar latent Twitter topics

    Maternal body mass index, duration of exclusive breastfeeding and children's developmental status at the age of 6 years

Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links fieldOBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the duration of exclusive breastfeeding and maternal body mass index (BMI) are associated with children's developmental status at the time of beginning elementary school. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: The subjects in the sample came from a longitudinal study on infant nutrition in Iceland. Food records were made once a month from birth to the age of 12 months, from which duration of exclusive breastfeeding could be determined. Mothers filled in The Icelandic developmental inventory for evaluation of motor and verbal development close to their children's sixth birthday (n = 85). Maternal self-reported weight and height was recorded. Information on socioeconomic factors was gathered by a questionnaire. RESULTS: Duration of exclusive breastfeeding, in months, was positively related to children's motor component (B = 0.5+/-0.5, P = 0.054) and to the total developmental index (B = 1.0+/-0.5, P = 0.044) at 6 y, adjusting for gender and socioeconomic factors (maternal and paternal education, and family income). Children's learning score was negatively related to maternal BMI (B = -0.5+/-0.2, P=0.047). An inverse association also appeared between maternal BMI and two out of the three developmental composite scores, that is, verbal component and the total developmental index (B = -0.6+/-0.3, P=0.049) and (B = -0.4+/-0.2, P=0.057), respectively. In multiple regression the developmental indexes were most strongly independently associated with maternal BMI (negatively) and infants' birth weight (positively). CONCLUSION: Maternal BMI and duration of breastfeeding were associated with verbal and motor development of 6-y-old children, independent of socioeconomic factors. Birth weight was also an independent determinant for developmental scores

    Long range magnetic ordering in Na2_2IrO3_3

    We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic structure of the honeycomb lattice magnet Na2_2IrO3_3, a strong candidate for a realization of a gapless spin-liquid. Using resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Ir L3_3-edge, we find 3D long range antiferromagnetic order below TN_N=13.3 K. From the azimuthal dependence of the magnetic Bragg peak, the ordered moment is determined to be predominantly along the {\it a}-axis. Combining the experimental data with first principles calculations, we propose that the most likely spin structure is a novel "zig-zag" structure

    Tracing the Transitions from Pluripotency to Germ Cell Fate with CRISPR Screening

    Early mammalian development entails transit through naïve pluripotency towards post-implantation epiblast, which subsequently gives rise to primordial germ cells (PGC), the founding germline population. To investigate these cell fate transitions, we developed a compound-reporter to track cellular identity in a model of PGC specification (PGC-like cells;PGCLC), and coupled it with genome-wide CRISPR-screening. We identify key genes both for exit from pluripotency and for acquisition of PGC fate, and characterise a central role for the transcription-regulators Nr5a2 and Zfp296 in germline ontogeny. Abrogation of these genes results in widespread activation (Nr5a2-/-) or inhibition (Zfp296-/-) of WNT-pathway factors in PGCLC. This leads to aberrant upregulation of the somatic programme or failure to activate germline-genes, respectively, and consequently loss of germ cell identity. Our study places Zfp296 and Nr5a2 as key components of an expanded PGC gene regulatory network, and outlines a transferable strategy for identifying critical regulators of complex cell fate decisions

    A well-known feature of CaFe2_{2}As2_{2}-based superconductors is the pressure-induced collapsed tetragonal phase that is commonly ascribed to the formation of an interlayer As-As bond. Using detailed X-ray scattering and spectroscopy, we find that Rh-doped Ca0.8_{0.8}Sr0.2_{0.2}Fe2_{2}As2_{2} does not undergo a first-order phase transition and that local Fe moments persist despite the formation of interlayer As-As bonds. Our density functional theory calculations reveal that the Fe-As bond geometry is critical for stabilizing magnetism and that the pressure-induced drop in the cc lattice parameter observed in pure CaFe2_{2}As2_{2} is mostly due to a constriction within the FeAs planes. These phenomena are best understood using an often overlooked explanation for the equilibrium Fe-As bond geometry, which is set by a competition between covalent bonding and exchange splitting between strongly hybridized Fe 3d3d and As 4p4p states. In this framework, the collapsed tetragonal phase emerges when covalent bonding completely wins out over exchange splitting. Thus the collapsed tetragonal phase is properly understood as a strong, covalent phase that is fully nonmagnetic with the As-As bond forming as a byproduct.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, and 1 table.     Effect of heat treatment on mechanical dissipation in Ta2_2O5_5 coatings

    Thermal noise arising from mechanical dissipation in dielectric reflective coatings is expected to critically limit the sensitivity of precision measurement systems such as high-resolution optical spectroscopy, optical frequency standards and future generations of interferometric gravitational wave detectors. We present measurements of the effect of post-deposition heat treatment on the temperature dependence of the mechanical dissipation in ion-beam sputtered tantalum pentoxide between 11\,K and 300\,K. We find the temperature dependence of the dissipation is strongly dependent on the temperature at which the heat treatment was carried out, and we have identified three dissipation peaks occurring at different heat treatment temperatures. At temperatures below 200\,K, the magnitude of the loss was found to increase with higher heat treatment temperatures, indicating that heat treatment is a significant factor in determining the level of coating thermal noise.Comment: accepted Classical and Quantum Gravity 201
