Product Measure Steady States of Generalized Zero Range Processes

We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of factorizable steady states of the Generalized Zero Range Process. This process allows transitions from a site ii to a site i+qi+q involving multiple particles with rates depending on the content of the site ii, the direction qq of movement, and the number of particles moving. We also show the sufficiency of a similar condition for the continuous time Mass Transport Process, where the mass at each site and the amount transferred in each transition are continuous variables; we conjecture that this is also a necessary condition.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX with IOP style files. v2 has minor corrections; v3 has been rewritten for greater clarit

On the transport and thermodynamic properties of quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes A0.9_{0.9}Mo6_6O17_{17} (A=Na, K)

We report a comparative study of the specific heat, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity of the quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes Na0.9_{0.9}Mo6_6O17_{17} and K0.9_{0.9}Mo6_6O17_{17}, with special emphasis on the behavior near their respective charge-density-wave transition temperatures TPT_P. The contrasting behavior of both the transport and the thermodynamic properties near TPT_P is argued to arise predominantly from the different levels of intrinsic disorder in the two systems. A significant proportion of the enhancement of the thermal conductivity above TPT_P in Na0.9_{0.9}Mo6_6O17_{17}, and to a lesser extent in K0.9_{0.9}Mo6_6O17_{17}, is attributed to the emergence of phason excitations.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, To appear in Physical Review

Edge and Bulk Transport in the Mixed State of a Type-II Superconductor

By comparing the voltage-current (V-I) curves obtained before and after cutting a sample of 2H-NbSe2, we separate the bulk and edge contributions to the transport current at various dissipation levels and derive their respective V- I curves and critical currents. We find that the edge contribution is thermally activated across a current dependent surface barrier. By contrast the bulk V-I curves are linear, as expected from the free flux flow model. The relative importance of bulk and edge contributions is found to depend on dissipation level and sample dimensions. We further show that the peak effect is a sharp bulk phenomenon and that it is broadened by the edge contribution

Equilibration and Dynamic Phase Transitions of a Driven Vortex Lattice

We report on the observation of two types of current driven transitions in metastable vortex lattices. The metastable states, which are missed in usual slow transport measurements, are detected with a fast transport technique in the vortex lattice of undoped 2H-NbSe2_2. The transitions are seen by following the evolution of these states when driven by a current. At low currents we observe an equilibration transition from a metastable to a stable state, followed by a dynamic crystallization transition at high currents.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Lifeworld Inc. : and what to do about it

Can we detect changes in the way that the world turns up as they turn up? This paper makes such an attempt. The first part of the paper argues that a wide-ranging change is occurring in the ontological preconditions of Euro-American cultures, based in reworking what and how an event is produced. Driven by the security – entertainment complex, the aim is to mass produce phenomenological encounter: Lifeworld Inc as I call it. Swimming in a sea of data, such an aim requires the construction of just enough authenticity over and over again. In the second part of the paper, I go on to argue that this new world requires a different kind of social science, one that is experimental in its orientation—just as Lifeworld Inc is—but with a mission to provoke awareness in untoward ways in order to produce new means of association. Only thus, or so I argue, can social science add to the world we are now beginning to live in

MEKK2 mediates aberrant ERK activation in neurofibromatosis type I

    Get PDF
Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is characterized by prominent skeletal manifestations caused by NF1 loss. While inhibitors of the ERK activating kinases MEK1/2 are promising as a means to treat NF1, the broad blockade of the ERK pathway produced by this strategy is potentially associated with therapy limiting toxicities. Here, we have sought targets offering a more narrow inhibition of ERK activation downstream of NF1 loss in the skeleton, finding that MEKK2 is a novel component of a noncanonical ERK pathway in osteoblasts that mediates aberrant ERK activation after NF1 loss. Accordingly, despite mice with conditional deletion of Nf1 in mature osteoblasts (Nf1(fl/fl);Dmp1-Cre) and Mekk2(-/-) each displaying skeletal defects, Nf1(fl/fl);Mekk2(-/-);Dmp1-Cre mice show an amelioration of NF1-associated phenotypes. We also provide proof-of-principle that FDA-approved inhibitors with activity against MEKK2 can ameliorate NF1 skeletal pathology. Thus, MEKK2 functions as a MAP3K in the ERK pathway in osteoblasts, offering a potential new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of NF1

Non-fermi-liquid single particle lineshape of the quasi-one-dimensional non-CDW metal Li_{0.9}Mo_{6}O_{17} : comparison to the Luttinger liquid

We report the detailed non-Fermi liquid (NFL) lineshape of the dispersing excitation which defines the Fermi surface (FS) for quasi-one-dimensional Li_{0.9}Mo_{6}O_{17}. The properties of Li_{0.9}Mo_{6}O_{17} strongly suggest that the NFL behavior has a purely electronic origin. Relative to the theoretical Luttinger liquid lineshape, we identify significant similarities, but also important differences.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps figure
