Exterior powers in Iwasawa theory
The Iwasawa theory of CM fields has traditionally concerned Iwasawa modules
that are abelian pro-p Galois groups with ramification allowed at a maximal set
of primes over p such that the module is torsion. A main conjecture for such an
Iwasawa module describes its codimension one support in terms of a p-adic
L-function attached to the primes of ramification. In this paper, we study more
general and potentially much smaller Iwasawa modules that are quotients of
exterior powers of Iwasawa modules with ramification at a set of primes over p
by sums of exterior powers of inertia subgroups. We show that the higher
codimension support of such quotients can be measured by finite collections of
p-adic L-functions under the relevant CM main conjectures.Comment: 41 pages, to appear in J. Eur. Math. So
A new measurement of thermal conductivity of amorphous ice and its implications for the thermal evolution of comets
Very slowly deposited amorphous ice has a thermal conductivity about four orders of magnitude or more smaller than hitherto estimated. Using the exceedingly low value of the thermal conductivity of comets deduced from the properties of amorphous ice leads to the expectation that internal heating of comets is negligible below the outer several tens of centimeters
\u3cem\u3eArabidopsis\u3c/em\u3e AZI1 Family Proteins Mediate Signal Mobilization for Systemic Defence Priming
Priming is a major mechanism behind the immunological \u27memory\u27 observed during two key plant systemic defences: systemic acquired resistance (SAR) and induced systemic resistance (ISR). Lipid-derived azelaic acid (AZA) is a mobile priming signal. Here, we show that the lipid transfer protein (LTP)-like AZI1 and its closest paralog EARLI1 are necessary for SAR, ISR and the systemic movement and uptake of AZA in Arabidopsis. Imaging and fractionation studies indicate that AZI1 and EARLI1 localize to expected places for lipid exchange/movement to occur. These are the ER/plasmodesmata, chloroplast outer envelopes and membrane contact sites between them. Furthermore, these LTP-like proteins form complexes and act at the site of SAR establishment. The plastid targeting of AZI1 and AZI1 paralogs occurs through a mechanism that may enable/facilitate their roles in signal mobilization

Major results of the Skylab T025 Coronagraph experiment designed to monitor the particulate contamination about the spacecraft and to study the earth's atmospheric aerosol distribution are presented. A model for comet outbursts based on the properties of amorphous ice and ground based narrow-band and white light photography of comet Kohoutek ten days to perihelion are included. The effect of atmospheric refraction on the analysis of the T025 atmospheric data was also investigated

Effects of Burial and Soil Condition on Postharvest Mortality of Boll Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Fallen Cotton Fruit
Effects of soil condition and burial on boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman, mortality in fallen cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., fruit were assessed in this study. During hot weather immediately after summer harvest operations in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, burial of infested fruit in conventionally tilled field plots permitted significantly greater survival of weevils than in no-tillage plots. Burial of infested squares protected developing weevils from heat and desiccation that cause high mortality on the soil surface during and after harvest in midsummer and late summer. A laboratory assay showed that burial of infested squares resulted in significantly greater weevil mortality in wet than in dry sandy or clay soils. Significantly fewer weevils rose to the soil surface after burial of infested bolls during winter compared with bolls set on the soil surface, a likely result of wetting by winter rainfall. A combination of leaving infested fruit exposed to heat before the onset of cooler winter temperatures and burial by tillage when temperatures begin to cool might be an important tactic for reducing populations of boll weevils that overwinter in cotton fields
