    Measurements of sonic booms generated by an airplane flying at Mach 3.5 and 4.8

    Sonic booms generated by the X-15 airplane flying at Mach numbers of 3.5 and 4.8 were measured. The experimental results agreed within 12 percent with results obtained from theoretical methods. No unusual phenomena related to overpressure were encountered. Scaled data from the X-15 airplane for Mach 4.8 agreed with data for an SR-71 airplane operating at lower Mach numbers and similar altitudes. The simple technique used to scale the data on the basis of airplane lift was satisfactory for comparing X-15 and SR-71 sonic boom signatures

Various perturbation measures are considered and computationally tractable formulae are derived. The results are applied to a class of retarded delay differential equations.     Television audiences and fans are increasingly enrolled in the co-production of the television experience. Return-path communication enabled by digital media allows show producers to gather real-time market data about audiences, as well as to solicit creative input from audience members individually and in aggregate. This transformation is not without its challenges: audiences and producers must negotiate shared ownership of the televisual product. The intellectual property implications of interactive TV are therefore considerable: who owns the intellectual property in shows with substantial audience engagement? How can we locate and ascertain the value of intellectual property added by viewer contributions? The authors propose four definitions of intellectual property through which to examine the status of viewer creativity: legal/regulatory, entrepreneurial, accounting and communitarian. The authors conclude that each definition on its own is insufficient to aid strategic planning, so a new model of programme-as-platform is proposed for TV companies working with interactive IP

    A strong 3.4 micron emission feature in comet Austin 1989c1

    High resolution 2.8-4.0 micron spectra of the 'new' comet Austin 1989c1, taken on 15-16 May 1990 confirm the presence of the broad emission features around 3.4 and 3.52 micron seen in a number of bright comets and ascribed to organic material. Both the 3.4 micron band strength and the 3.52/3.36 micron flux ratios are among the largest so far observed. The data are consistent with the relationship between band strength and water production rate that was recently derived. Excess emission at 3.28 and 3.6 micron cannot be unambiguously identified as features due to the poor signal-to-noise ratio

    A flexible very high frequency (VHF) stratosphere-troposphere (ST) radar configured for meteorological research is to be constructed near Urbana, Illinois. Measurement of small vertical velocities associated with synoptic-scale meteorology can be performed. A large Doppler microwave radar (CHILL) is located a few km from the site of the proposed ST radar. Since the microwave radar can measure the location and velocity of hydrometeors and the VHF ST radar can measure clear (or cloudy) air velocities, simultaneous observations by these two radars of stratiform or convective weather systems would provide valuable meteorological information

    Supersymmetric Wilson Loops in IIB Matrix Model

    We show that the supersymmetric Wilson loops in IIB matrix model give a transition operator from reduced supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to supersymmetric space-time theory. In comparison with Green-Schwarz superstring we identify the supersymmetric Wilson loops with the asymptotic states of IIB superstring. It is pointed out that the supersymmetry transformation law of the Wilson loops is the inverse of that for the vertex operators of massless modes in the U(N) open superstring with Dirichlet boundary condition.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, minor typos correcte
