Charge Lattices and Consistency of 6D Supergravity
We extend the known consistency conditions on the low-energy theory of
six-dimensional N = 1 supergravity. We review some facts about the theory of
two-form gauge fields and conclude that the charge lattice Gamma for such a
theory has to be self-dual. The Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation conditions
in the supergravity theory determine a sublattice of Gamma. The condition that
this sublattice can be extended to a self-dual lattice Gamma leads to a strong
constraint on theories that otherwise appear to be self-consistent.Comment: 15 pages. v2: minor changes; references, additional example added;

Ramond-Ramond Cohomology and O(D,D) T-duality
In the name of supersymmetric double field theory, superstring effective
actions can be reformulated into simple forms. They feature a pair of vielbeins
corresponding to the same spacetime metric, and hence enjoy double local
Lorentz symmetries. In a manifestly covariant manner --with regard to O(D,D)
T-duality, diffeomorphism, B-field gauge symmetry and the pair of local Lorentz
symmetries-- we incorporate R-R potentials into double field theory. We take
them as a single object which is in a bi-fundamental spinorial representation
of the double Lorentz groups. We identify cohomological structure relevant to
the field strength. A priori, the R-R sector as well as all the fermions are
O(D,D) singlet. Yet, gauge fixing the two vielbeins equal to each other
modifies the O(D,D) transformation rule to call for a compensating local
Lorentz rotation, such that the R-R potential may turn into an O(D,D) spinor
and T-duality can flip the chirality exchanging type IIA and IIB
supergravities.Comment: 1+37 pages, no figure; Structure reorganized, References added, To

Exposure to microplastics reduces attachment strength and alters the haemolymph proteome of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis)
The contamination of marine ecosystems with microplastics, such as the polymer polyethylene, a commonly used component of single-use packaging, is of global concern. Although it has been suggested that biodegradable polymers, such as polylactic acid, may be used to replace some polyethylene packaging, little is known about their effects on marine organisms. Blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, have become a “model organism” for investigating the effects of microplastics in marine ecosystems. We show here that repeated exposure, over a period of 52 days in an outdoor mesocosm setting, of M. edulis to polyethylene microplastics reduced the number of byssal threads produced and the attachment strength (tenacity) by ∼50%. Exposure to either type of microplastic altered the haemolymph proteome and, although a conserved response to microplastic exposure was observed, overall polyethylene resulted in more changes to protein abundances than polylactic acid. Many of the proteins affected are involved in vital biological processes, such as immune regulation, detoxification, metabolism and structural development. Our study highlights the utility of mass spectrometry-based proteomics to assess the health of key marine organisms and identifies the potential mechanisms by which microplastics, both conventional and biodegradable, could affect their ability to form and maintain reefs
Differential geometry with a projection: Application to double field theory
In recent development of double field theory, as for the description of the
massless sector of closed strings, the spacetime dimension is formally doubled,
i.e. from D to D+D, and the T-duality is realized manifestly as a global O(D,D)
rotation. In this paper, we conceive a differential geometry characterized by a
O(D,D) symmetric projection, as the underlying mathematical structure of double
field theory. We introduce a differential operator compatible with the
projection, which, contracted with the projection, can be covariantized and may
replace the ordinary derivatives in the generalized Lie derivative that
generates the gauge symmetry of double field theory. We construct various gauge
covariant tensors which include a scalar and a tensor carrying two O(D,D)
vector indices.Comment: 1+22 pages, No figure; a previous result on 4-index tensor removed,

Current management of children and young people with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia - HEART UK statement of care
This consensus statement on the management of children and young people with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) addresses management of paediatric FH in the UK, identified by cascade testing when a parent is diagnosed with FH and for those diagnosed following incidental lipid tests. Lifestyle and dietary advice appropriate for children with FH; suggested low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) targets and the most appropriate lipid-lowering therapies to achieve these are discussed in this statement of care. Based on the population prevalence of FH as ~1/250 and the UK paediatric population, there are approximately 50,000 FH children under 18 years. Currently only about 550 of these children and young people have been identified and are under paediatric care
D-brane anomaly inflow revisited
Axial and gravitational anomaly of field theories, when embedded in string
theory, must be accompanied by canceling inflow. We give a self-contained
overview for various world-volume theories, and clarify the role of smeared
magnetic sources in I-brane/D-brane cases. The proper anomaly descent of the
source, as demanded by regularity of RR field strengths H's, turns out to be an
essential ingredient. We show how this allows correct inflow to be generated
for all such theories, including self-dual cases, and also that the mechanism
is now insensitive to the choice between the two related but inequivalent forms
of D-brane Chern-Simons couplings. In particular, SO(6)_R axial anomaly of d=4
maximal SYM is canceled by the inflow onto D3-branes via the standard minimal
coupling to C_4. We also propose how, for the anomaly cancelation, the four
types of Orientifold planes should be coupled to the spacetime curvatures, of
which conflicting claims existed previously.Comment: 41 pages, references updated; version to appear in JHE

A high proportion of the world population of the spoon-billed sandpiper occurs at Tiaozini, China, during the post-breeding Moult
The Critically Endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper Calidris pygmaea breeds in arctic and subarctic Russia and migrates to winter on coastal mudflats in south-east Asia. Its world population is probably about 700 individuals. We report Lincoln-Petersen closed-population estimates of the number of Spoon-billed Sandpipers at Tiaozini, a coastal site in Jiangsu Province, China, based upon resightings and scan surveys of individually-marked leg-flagged birds. Surveys were conducted in September-October, when adult Spoon-billed Sandpipers are moulting their primary feathers and long-distance movements are unlikely. We estimated that 220 birds were present at Tiaozini in 2017 and 224 in 2018. Nearly all of them were adults (one-year old or older), so about 40% of the world population of this age class was estimated to be present. Hence, protection of the mudflats and roost sites at Tiaozini is of global importance for the conservation of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper.Non
Sized Types for low-level Quantum Metaprogramming
One of the most fundamental aspects of quantum circuit design is the concept
of families of circuits parametrized by an instance size. As in classical
programming, metaprogramming allows the programmer to write entire families of
circuits simultaneously, an ability which is of particular importance in the
context of quantum computing as algorithms frequently use arithmetic over
non-standard word lengths. In this work, we introduce metaQASM, a typed
extension of the openQASM language supporting the metaprogramming of circuit
families. Our language and type system, built around a lightweight
implementation of sized types, supports subtyping over register sizes and is
moreover type-safe. In particular, we prove that our system is strongly
normalizing, and as such any well-typed metaQASM program can be statically
unrolled into a finite circuit.Comment: Presented at Reversible Computation 2019. Final authenticated

F-Theory and the Mordell-Weil Group of Elliptically-Fibered Calabi-Yau Threefolds
The Mordell-Weil group of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold X
contains information about the abelian sector of the six-dimensional theory
obtained by compactifying F-theory on X. After examining features of the
abelian anomaly coefficient matrix and U(1) charge quantization conditions of
general F-theory vacua, we study Calabi-Yau threefolds with Mordell-Weil
rank-one as a first step towards understanding the features of the Mordell-Weil
group of threefolds in more detail. In particular, we generate an interesting
class of F-theory models with U(1) gauge symmetry that have matter with both
charges 1 and 2. The anomaly equations --- which relate the Neron-Tate height
of a section to intersection numbers between the section and fibral rational
curves of the manifold --- serve as an important tool in our analysis.Comment: 29 pages + appendices, 5 figures; v2: minor correction
