Green-Schwarz Formulation of Self-Dual Superstring
The self-dual superstring has been described previously in a
Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond formulation with local N=2 or 4 world-sheet supersymmetry.
We present a Green-Schwarz-type formulation, with manifest spacetime
supersymmetry.Comment: 11 pg., (uuencoded dvi file) ITP-SB-92-5
CORROSION STUDIES FOR A FUSED SALT-LIQUID METAL EXTRACTION PROCESS FOR THE LIQUID METAL FUEL REACTOR
Corrosion screening tests were carried out on potential materials of construction for use in a fused salt-liquid metal extraction process plant. The corrodents of interest were NaCl--KCl-- MgCl/sub 2/ eutectic, LiCl--KCl eutectic, Bi-- U fuel, and BiCl/sub 3/, either separately or in various combinations. Screening tests to determine the resistance of a wide range of commercial alloys to the corrodents were performed in static and tilting-furnace capsules. Some ceramic materials were tested in static capsules. Largerscale tests of metallic materials were conducted in thermal convection loops and in a forced circulation loop. Some of the tests were conducted isothermally at 500 deg C, and others were performed under 40 to 50 deg C temperature differences at roughly the same teinperature level. On the basis of metallographic examination of exposed test tabs and chemical analyses of corrodents, it was found that the binary and ternary eutectics by themselves produced little attack on any of the materials tested. A wide variety of materials including 1020 mild steel, 2 1/4 Cr--1 Mo alloy steel, types 304 (ELC), 310, 316, 347, 430, and 446 stainless steel, 16-1 Croloy, Inconel, Hastelloy C, Inor-8, Mo, and Ta is, therefore, available for further study. Corrosion by the ternary salt-fuel system was characteristic of that produced by the fuel alone. Alloys such as 1020 mild steel, and 1 1/4 Cr--1/ 2 Mo, and 2 1/4 Cr--1 Mo alloy steel, which are resistant to fuel, would be likely choices at present for container materials. BiCl/sub 3/ produced extensive attack on ternary salt-fuel containers when the fuel contained insufficient concentrations of oxidizable solutes. Au and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ were the only materials not attacked by BiCl/sub 3/ in ternary salt alone. (auth
Generalized BF Theory in Superspace as Underlying Theory of 11D Supergravity
We construct a generalized BF theory in superspace that can embed
eleven-dimensional supergravity theory. Our topological BF theory can
accommodate all the necessary Bianchi identities for teleparallel superspace
supergravity in eleven-dimensions, as the simplest but nontrivial solutions to
superfield equations for our superspace action. This indicates that our theory
may have solutions other than eleven-dimensional supergravity, accommodating
generalized theories of eleven-dimensional supergravity. Therefore our
topological theory can be a good candidate for the low energy limit of
M-theory, as an underlying fundamental theory providing a `missing link'
between eleven-dimensional supergravity and M-theory.Comment: 16 pages, latex, two new paragraphs in section 4 and in Concluding

PCI-SS: MISO dynamic nonlinear protein secondary structure prediction
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Since the function of a protein is largely dictated by its three dimensional configuration, determining a protein's structure is of fundamental importance to biology. Here we report on a novel approach to determining the one dimensional secondary structure of proteins (distinguishing α-helices, β-strands, and non-regular structures) from primary sequence data which makes use of Parallel Cascade Identification (PCI), a powerful technique from the field of nonlinear system identification.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using PSI-BLAST divergent evolutionary profiles as input data, dynamic nonlinear systems are built through a black-box approach to model the process of protein folding. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are applied in order to optimize the architectural parameters of the PCI models. The three-state prediction problem is broken down into a combination of three binary sub-problems and protein structure classifiers are built using 2 layers of PCI classifiers. Careful construction of the optimization, training, and test datasets ensures that no homology exists between any training and testing data. A detailed comparison between PCI and 9 contemporary methods is provided over a set of 125 new protein chains guaranteed to be dissimilar to all training data. Unlike other secondary structure prediction methods, here a web service is developed to provide both human- and machine-readable interfaces to PCI-based protein secondary structure prediction. This server, called PCI-SS, is available at <url>http://bioinf.sce.carleton.ca/PCISS</url>. In addition to a dynamic PHP-generated web interface for humans, a Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) interface is added to permit invocation of the PCI-SS service remotely. This machine-readable interface facilitates incorporation of PCI-SS into multi-faceted systems biology analysis pipelines requiring protein secondary structure information, and greatly simplifies high-throughput analyses. XML is used to represent the input protein sequence data and also to encode the resulting structure prediction in a machine-readable format. To our knowledge, this represents the only publicly available SOAP-interface for a protein secondary structure prediction service with published WSDL interface definition.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Relative to the 9 contemporary methods included in the comparison cascaded PCI classifiers perform well, however PCI finds greatest application as a consensus classifier. When PCI is used to combine a sequence-to-structure PCI-based classifier with the current leading ANN-based method, PSIPRED, the overall error rate (Q3) is maintained while the rate of occurrence of a particularly detrimental error is reduced by up to 25%. This improvement in BAD score, combined with the machine-readable SOAP web service interface makes PCI-SS particularly useful for inclusion in a tertiary structure prediction pipeline.</p
Space-Time Supersymmetry of Extended Fermionic Strings in Dimensions
The fermionic string theory is revisited in light of its recently
proposed equivalence to the non-compact fermionic string model. The
issues of space-time Lorentz covariance and supersymmetry for the BRST
quantized strings living in uncompactified dimensions are
discussed. The equivalent local quantum supersymmetric field theory appears to
be the most transparent way to represent the space-time symmetries of the
extended fermionic strings and their interactions. Our considerations support
the Siegel's ideas about the presence of Lorentz symmetry as well as
at least one self-dual space-time supersymmetry in the theory of the
fermionic strings, though we do not have a compelling reason to argue about the
necessity of the {\it maximal} space-time supersymmetry. The world-sheet
arguments about the absence of all string massive modes in the physical
spectrum, and the vanishing of all string-loop amplitudes in the Polyakov
approach, are given on the basis of general consistency of the theory.Comment: 29 pages, LaTeX, ITP-UH-1/9
Families of N=2 Strings
In a given 4d spacetime bakcground, one can often construct not one but a
family of distinct N=2 string theories. This is due to the multiple ways N=2
superconformal algebra can be embedded in a given worldsheet theory. We
formulate the principle of obtaining different physical theories by gauging
different embeddings of the same symmetry algebra in the same ``pre-theory.''
We then apply it to N=2 strings and formulate the recipe for finding the
associated parameter spaces of gauging. Flat and curved target spaces of both
(4,0) and (2,2) signatures are considered. We broadly divide the gauging
choices into two classes, denoted by alpha and beta, and show them to be
related by T-duality. The distinction between them is formulated topologically
and hinges on some unique properties of 4d manifolds. We determine what their
parameter spaces of gauging are under certain simplicity ansatz for generic
flat spaces (R^4 and its toroidal compactifications) as well as some curved
spaces. We briefly discuss the spectra of D-branes for both alpha and beta
families.Comment: 66+1 pages, 2 tables, latex 2e, hyperref. ver2: typos corrected,

On the origin of the Boson peak in globular proteins
We study the Boson Peak phenomenology experimentally observed in globular
proteins by means of elastic network models. These models are suitable for an
analytic treatment in the framework of Euclidean Random Matrix theory, whose
predictions can be numerically tested on real proteins structures. We find that
the emergence of the Boson Peak is strictly related to an intrinsic mechanical
instability of the protein, in close similarity to what is thought to happen in
glasses. The biological implications of this conclusion are also discussed by
focusing on a representative case study.Comment: Proceedings of the X International Workshop on Disordered Systems,
