    Within this paper there briefly presented the technical norms comprised in theOrder for using sewage sludge and the evaluation criteria of soils in order to apply as fertilizer. There were studied the physical and chemical features of a stagnic preluvosol (stagnic luvisol) in order to asses the possibility to fertilize it by sewage sludge. The paper has an informative role for local farmers who can benefit by sewage sludge from Wastewater Treatment Plants of Craiova and Calafat

    Use of Fractal Analysis in the Evaluation of Deforested Areas in Romania

    Spectacular spatial dynamics of forest areas is one of the biggest challenges for the scientific world, concerned with completing the methodologies devoted to new methodological approaches, to provide new information that is indispensable in assessing the impact of deforestation within the ecosystem. In this study, we analyzed the evolution of the deforested areas, using the fractal fragmentation index (FFI). The research is based on high-resolution satellite images of forest areas between 2000 and 2017. The use of fractal algorithms allowed the modeling of the grinding patterns, identifying obvious differences between compact and fragmented cuts. Information is needed especially in the evaluation of the areas cleared because of illegal actions. Research has shown spectacular increases in deforestation in the mountain area, the northern and central groups of the Eastern Carpathians being the most fragmented geographical regions in Romania. The study showed that deforestation led to the fragmentation of forests, which generates major natural changes. The results obtained can contribute to the identification of new approaches in national forest fund management policies by establishing a critical fragmentation threshold

    Genetic diversity in Babesia canis and associated comorbidities can be fatal in dogs` babesiosis – a case study

    The aim of this paper is to briefly present some aspects of Babesia spp. taxonomy, incidence, clinical signs of their infection, and possibilities of prevention, as an introduction to a case study of canine babesiosis presentation. A 7-yearold Malinois dog was presented in August 2020 with signs of generalized icterus, high body temperature and mustard urine, all of them indicating babesiosis. Cytological examination confirmed the large Babesia canis spp., and the biochemical investigations revealed renal and hepatic failure. Although the therapeutic protocol included the specific antidote, imidocarb dipropionate – Imizol® (0.5 ml/10 kg body weight, in a single dose), fluid therapy, vitamin therapy, an antiemetic drug, and supplements for renal and hepatic functions sustaining, the investigated dog died. The postmortem investigation revealed generalized icterus. We consider the delaying of dog presentation at vet an important factor of this outcome; although an infection with various subspecies of Babesia canis was not excluded, the therapeutic intervention would have been the same

    Diagnostic methods and therapeutic options in dog skin allergies – a short review

    Allergy is an exaggerated reaction of the body, which occurs after the contact with various substances that the immune system considers foreign and acts against them. Like humans, dogs can be allergic to various substances which, when inhaled or absorbed through the skin, airways or gastrointestinal tract, stimulate the immune system by releasing histamine that induces inflammation, erythema, edema and itching. It is considered that all the cases of allergies, whether low, moderate or severe, are genetic in nature. Dogs that become allergic to drugs, vaccines, food, dust, pollen, fleas, various household substances, etc., are "genetically programmed" to have an immune system capable of producing an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction is not due to medication, biological products, food or the environment, but it is considered to be a genetic trait inherited from parents. Because there are different types of allergies and many conditions that can cause skin problems in dogs, the symptoms they present differ from one allergy to another, from one patient to another, requiring both diagnosis and treatment to be made differential for each type of allergy and for each individual. The symptoms of allergic reactions can be diagnosed through allergic tests (intradermal or blood tests), the individual removal of allergens from the dog's living environment (in case of parasitic allergy), or by reagent therapy. Fighting allergies involves the use of antihistamines, antiinflammatory corticosteroids, topical antipruritic substances, leukotrienes inhibitors, as well as various plant extracts with antiallergic effect

    Recent Deforestation Pattern Changes (2000-2017) in the Central Carpathians:A Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix and Fractal Analysis Approach

    The paper explores the distribution of tree cover and deforested areas in the Central Carpathians in the central-east part of Romania, in the context of the anthropogenic forest disturbances and sustainable forest management. The study aims to evaluate the spatiotemporal changes in deforested areas due to human pressure in the Carpathian Mountains, a sensitive biodiverse European ecosystem. We used an analysis of satellite imagery with Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (Landsat-7 ETM+) from the University of Maryland (UMD) Global Forest Change (GFC) dataset. The workflow started with the determination of tree cover and deforested areas from 2000–2017, with an overall accuracy of 97%. For the monitoring of forest dynamics, a Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix analysis (Entropy) and fractal analysis (Fractal Fragmentation-Compaction Index and Tug-of-War Lacunarity) were utilized. The increased fragmentation of tree cover (annually 2000–2017) was demonstrated by the highest values of the Fractal Fragmentation-Compaction Index, a measure of the degree of disorder (Entropy) and heterogeneity (Lacunarity). The principal outcome of the research reveals the dynamics of disturbance of tree cover and deforested areas expressed by the textural and fractal analysis. The results obtained can be used in the future development and adaptation of forestry management policies to ensure sustainable management of exploited forest areas

    Test and fault-tolerance for network-on-chip infrastructures

    The demands of future computing, as well as the challenges of nanometer-era VLSI design, will require new design techniques and design styles that are simultaneously high performance, energy-efficient, and robust to noise and process variation. One of the emerging problems concerns the communication mechanisms between the increasing number of blocks, or cores, that can be integrated onto a single chip. The bus-based systems and point-to-point interconnection strategies in use today cannot be easily scaled to accommodate the large numbers of cores projected in the near future. Network-on-chip (NoC) interconnect infrastructures are one of the key technologies that will enable the emergence of many-core processors and systems-on-chip with increased computing power and energy efficiency. This dissertation is focused on testing, yield improvement and fault-tolerance of such NoC infrastructures. A fast, efficient test method is developed for NoCs, that exploits their inherent parallelism to reduce the test time by transporting test data on multiple paths and testing multiple NoC components concurrently. The improvement of test time varies, depending on the NoC architecture and test transport protocol, from 2X to 34X, compared to current NoC test methods. This test mechanism is used subsequently to perform detection of NoC link permanent faults, which are then repaired by an on-chip mechanism that replaces the faulty signal lines with fault-free ones, thereby increasing the yield, while maintaining the same wire delay characteristics. The solution described in this dissertation improves significantly the achievable yield of NoC inter-switch channels â from 4% improvement for an 8-bit wide channel, to a 71% improvement for a 128-bit wide channel.     SoC interconnect architecture design and evaluation under timing constraints

    System on chip design steadily evolves toward different non-overlapping abstraction levels. Very different competence and design tools will be needed at each level. One specific level of abstraction will deal with interconnect technologies, with a pronounced trend towards networks on chip. It is projected that, within five years, the large majority of end-user SoC products will consist of heterogeneous embedded processors, built on multi-processor SoC platforms (MP-SoC). There is a tremendous amount of research required to characterize the various topologies and their effectiveness for different application domains. A common issue with all network-on-chip topologies is communication latency. Due to the increase of global wire delay with technology scaling, pipelining is required to hide the latency associated with the exchange of data across the chip. The building blocks of a network-on-chip are intelligent switches, which provide a data transport mechanism across the chip. Their design is critical due to different architectural and circuit level trade-offs. This work is novel in that it addresses the issues of quantifying the delay of different pipeline stages in an on-chip topology, and evaluates the effectiveness of a given topology in forthcoming technology nodes.Applied Science, Faculty ofElectrical and Computer Engineering, Department ofGraduat
