    A Dihydroxo-Bridged Ferric Dimer

    Get PDF
Recent investigations have produced a large number of dimeric complexes containing the oxo-bridged structural unit Fe_2O^(4+). Here we report the isolation and characterization of [Fe (pic)_2OH]_2 which apparently is the first example of a crystalline iron(III) dimer which utilizes dihydroxo bridging in its coordination structure

Non-geometric flux vacua, S-duality and algebraic geometry

    Get PDF
The four dimensional gauged supergravities descending from non-geometric string compactifications involve a wide class of flux objects which are needed to make the theory invariant under duality transformations at the effective level. Additionally, complex algebraic conditions involving these fluxes arise from Bianchi identities and tadpole cancellations in the effective theory. In this work we study a simple T and S-duality invariant gauged supergravity, that of a type IIB string compactified on a T6/(Z2xZ2)T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2) orientifold with O3/O7-planes. We build upon the results of recent works and develop a systematic method for solving all the flux constraints based on the algebra structure underlying the fluxes. Starting with the T-duality invariant supergravity, we find that the fluxes needed to restore S-duality can be simply implemented as linear deformations of the gauge subalgebra by an element of its second cohomology class. Algebraic geometry techniques are extensively used to solve these constraints and supersymmetric vacua, centering our attention on Minkowski solutions, become systematically computable and are also provided to clarify the methods.Comment: 47 pages, 10 tables, typos corrected, Accepted for Publication in Journal of High Energy Physic

Performance Analysis of Mobile Agents for Filtering Data Streams on Wireless Networks

    Get PDF
Wireless networks are an ideal environment for mobile agents, since their mobility allows them to move across an unreliable link to reside on a wired host, next to or closer to the resources that they need to use. Furthermore, client-specific data transformations can be moved across the wireless link and run on a wired gateway server, reducing bandwidth demands. In this paper we examine the tradeoffs faced when deciding whether to use mobile agents in a data-filtering application where numerous wireless clients filter information from a large data stream arriving across the wired network. We develop an analytical model and use parameters from filtering experiments conducted during a U.S. Navy Fleet Battle Experiment (FBE) to explore the model\u27s implications

XMM-Newton study of the persistent X-ray source 1E1743.1-2843 located in the Galactic Center direction

We report the results of an XMM-Newton observation of the persistent X-ray source 1E1743.1-2843, located in the Galactic Center (GC) direction. We determine the position of the source at alpha_J2000=17h46m21.0s, delta_J2000=-28deg43'44" (with an uncertainty of 1.5"), which is the most accurate to date, and will enable cross-identifications at other wavelengths. The source was bright during this observation (L_2-10keV ~ 2.7 x 10^36 d^2_10kpc erg/s for a power-law continuum), with no significant variability. We propose that 1E1743.1-2843 may be explained in terms of a black hole candidate in a low/hard state. There is an indication that the source exhibits different states from a comparison of our results with previous observations (e.g., ART-P, BeppoSAX). However, the present spectral analysis does not rule out the hypothesis of a neutron star low-mass X-ray binary as suggested previously. If 1E1743.1-2843 is actually located in the GC region, we might expect to observe significant 6.4keV fluorescent iron line emission from nearby molecular clouds (e.g., GCM+0.25+0.01).Comment: 6 pages; accepted for publication in A&

Swimming in circles: Motion of bacteria near solid boundaries

    Get PDF
Near a solid boundary, E. coli swims in clockwise circular motion. We provide a hydrodynamic model for this behavior. We show that circular trajectories are natural consequences of force-free and torque-free swimming, and the hydrodynamic interactions with the boundary, which also leads to a hydrodynamic trapping of the cells close to the surface. We compare the results of the model with experimental data and obtain reasonable agreement. In particular, we show that the radius of curvature of the trajectory increases with the length of the bacterium body.Comment: Also available at http://people.deas.harvard.edu/~lauga

    Genes in the postgenomic era

    Get PDF
We outline three very different concepts of the gene - 'instrumental', 'nominal', and 'postgenomic'. The instrumental gene has a critical role in the construction and interpretation of experiments in which the relationship between genotype and phenotype is explored via hybridization between organisms or directly between nucleic acid molecules. It also plays an important theoretical role in the foundations of disciplines such as quantitative genetics and population genetics. The nominal gene is a critical practical tool, allowing stable communication between bioscientists in a wide range of fields grounded in well-defined sequences of nucleotides, but this concept does not embody major theoretical insights into genome structure or function. The post-genomic gene embodies the continuing project of understanding how genome structure supports genome function, but with a deflationary picture of the gene as a structural unit. This final concept of the gene poses a significant challenge to conventional assumptions about the relationship between genome structure and function, and between genotype and phenotype

Ernst Freund as Precursor of the Rational Study of Corporate Law

Gindis, David, Ernst Freund as Precursor of the Rational Study of Corporate Law (October 27, 2017). Journal of Institutional Economics, Forthcoming. Available at SSRN: https://ssrn.com/abstract=2905547, doi: https://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.2905547The rise of large business corporations in the late 19th century compelled many American observers to admit that the nature of the corporation had yet to be understood. Published in this context, Ernst Freund's little-known The Legal Nature of Corporations (1897) was an original attempt to come to terms with a new legal and economic reality. But it can also be described, to paraphrase Oliver Wendell Holmes, as the earliest example of the rational study of corporate law. The paper shows that Freund had the intuitions of an institutional economist, and engaged in what today would be called comparative institutional analysis. Remarkably, his argument that the corporate form secures property against insider defection and against outsiders anticipated recent work on entity shielding and capital lock-in, and can be read as an early contribution to what today would be called the theory of the firm.Peer reviewe

Evidence that 5-HT2A Receptors in the Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus Mediate Neuroendocrine Responses to (-)DOI

This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from "http://www.jneurosci.org".The present study determined whether the serotonin2A (5-HT2A) receptors in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus mediate the neuroendocrine responses to a peripheral injection of the 5-HT2A/2Creceptor agonist (−)DOI [(−)1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane]. The 5-HT2A receptor antagonist MDL100,907 ((±)-α-(2,3-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-[2-(4-fluorophenylethyl)]-4-piperidinemethanol), the 5-HT2C receptor antagonist SB-242084 (6-chloro-5-methyl-1-[[2-[(2-methyl-3-pyridyl)oxy]-5-pyridyl]carbamoyl]-indoline), or vehicle were microinjected bilaterally through a chronically implanted double-barreled cannula into the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus 15 min before a peripheral injection of (−)DOI in conscious rats. (−)DOI significantly elevated plasma levels of oxytocin, prolactin, ACTH, corticosterone, and renin. Neither the 5-HT2A receptor antagonist nor the 5-HT2Creceptor antagonist, injected alone, altered the basal levels of these hormones. MDL100,907 (0.748, 7.48, and 18.7 nmol) dose dependently inhibited the (−)DOI-induced increase in all of the hormones except corticosterone. In contrast, SB-242084 (10 nmol) did not inhibit (−)DOI-increased hormone levels. To confirm the presence of 5-HT2A receptors in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, 5-HT2A receptors were mapped using immunohistochemistry. Densely labeled magnocellular neurons were observed throughout the anterior and posterior magnocellular subdivisions of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus. Moderately to densely labeled cells were also observed in parvicellular regions. Thus, it is likely that 5-HT2A receptors are present on neuroendocrine cells in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus. These data provide the first direct evidence that neuroendocrine responses to a peripheral injection of (−)DOI are predominantly mediated by activation of 5-HT2A receptors in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus

Adsorbed molecules can significantly affect the properties of atomically thin materials. Physisorbed water plays a significant role in altering the optoelectronic properties of single-layer MoS_2, one such 2D film. Here we demonstrate the distinct quenching effect of adsorbed water on the photoluminescence of single-layer MoS_2 through scanning-probe and optical microscopies

The spinorial geometry of supersymmetric heterotic string backgrounds

We determine the geometry of supersymmetric heterotic string backgrounds for which all parallel spinors with respect to the connection ∇^\hat\nabla with torsion HH, the NS⊗\otimesNS three-form field strength, are Killing. We find that there are two classes of such backgrounds, the null and the timelike. The Killing spinors of the null backgrounds have stability subgroups K\ltimes\bR^8 in Spin(9,1)Spin(9,1), for K=Spin(7)K=Spin(7), SU(4), Sp(2)Sp(2), SU(2)×SU(2)SU(2)\times SU(2) and {1}\{1\}, and the Killing spinors of the timelike backgrounds have stability subgroups G2G_2, SU(3), SU(2) and {1}\{1\}. The former admit a single null ∇^\hat\nabla-parallel vector field while the latter admit a timelike and two, three, five and nine spacelike ∇^\hat\nabla-parallel vector fields, respectively. The spacetime of the null backgrounds is a Lorentzian two-parameter family of Riemannian manifolds BB with skew-symmetric torsion. If the rotation of the null vector field vanishes, the holonomy of the connection with torsion of BB is contained in KK. The spacetime of time-like backgrounds is a principal bundle PP with fibre a Lorentzian Lie group and base space a suitable Riemannian manifold with skew-symmetric torsion. The principal bundle is equipped with a connection λ\lambda which determines the non-horizontal part of the spacetime metric and of HH. The curvature of λ\lambda takes values in an appropriate Lie algebra constructed from that of KK. In addition dHdH has only horizontal components and contains the Pontrjagin class of PP. We have computed in all cases the Killing spinor bilinears, expressed the fluxes in terms of the geometry and determine the field equations that are implied by the Killing spinor equations.Comment: 73pp. v2: minor change
